Not sure we have a lot of choice in terms of alternatives?

Maybe Hogan, McCormack and Lewis to sit out as rather they were kept for Ipswich? Guessing Bjelland and Barbet still out? Vibe still in Rio

I'd agree with this. It sounds like it's best to leave out Yennaris to allow his dodgy toe to recover, and we don't want anything to happen to Hogan while Vibe is away. Also we could do without Macleod playing too many games too soon.

Bonham and Field need games to develop, so this is the best starting eleven IMO. Hopefully Holldack can get some decent time off the bench.

Would prefer us to concentrate on keeping injured/slightly unfit players ready for Saturday and keeping with the 4-2-3-1 so,

Bentley
Mepham Dean Egan Elder
Woods Holldack
Clarke Sawyers Field
Hoffman

Relying on Sawyers to support The Hoff.

Hopefully team will be selected to avoid injury to key personnel. Not bothered about this one. FA Cup maybe, but not this one.

Really cannot believe the number of people on here who seem happy for us to play a weakened team in the League Cup. You people really have no sense of tradition and clearly can't remember some of the great nights under the lights in this competition over the years. Liverpool and Everton to name just two . Some of the teams posted above will get rolled over at a canter by Exeter.

"FA Cup maybe". I really do give up . Since when has the season been about the League and nothing else. I really truly do despair

I think some of the line ups are predicted teams, rather than preferred teams. It would be great to play our full starting XI, but with three games in 8 days starting from Sat it's just not going to happen... The rewards for the League Cup are fairly minor at this stage so we need to bundle through a couple of rounds before we start investing more in it. Just like was the case with the JPT... Just the way it is now.

My preferred lineup includes Bentley rather than Bonham but I doubt we'll get that.

Rest those with knocks and pick the best 11 from the remaining. Unfortunately there's a fair few starters that are too important for the rest of the season to risk, Lewis, Nico, Scott, Bjelland, Barbet, Colin would all be in my best 11 but I hope non start tomorrow!!

The times they are a-changing. I would have agreed with you up until quite recently. Used to love both cup competitions, especially the FA Cup, the final of which used to be the highlight of the year. But both have been seriously devalued by the lack of commitment of so many clubs in recent years that they no longer retain their prestige. For us, as a club with a smaller budget, if we are to aim for promotion to the promised land one of these seasons soon, then we have to really look after our small core of real quality players in order to stand a chance. Sorry, but that's the reality.

A strong team - Having seen Saturday's effort a test against a team we should beat would be no bad thing. I would swap McCormack or Yennaris for McEachran.

That may be your reality it isn't mine . If the little cherubs need wrapping in cotton wool after one competitive match there is something far far wrong . One way to improve our budget is to progress in the cups !

I will be on full rant standby tonight as this issue seriously pisses me off

Deffo wouldn't play Nico. He needed a painkilling injection to appear on Saturday.

Strong side, comfortable win, sets us up nicely for Saturday.

Team for Exeter

We still need to gel so not too many changes for me. Start with a strong side, make the game safe (i.e. 3-0 up by half time) and then take off Hogan, Woods and one other. Whatever back 4 Deano expects to play against Ipswich should start tonight with Bentley behind them, defenders and keeper need time to get used to each other. So I would go;

Bentley
Clarke Dean Egan Elder
Woods Nico
Saunders Sawyers Mcleod
Hogan

KK, Hoffman and Josh Mc to come on when we are 3-0 up.

I have to say that if the same team that played at Huddersfield play tonight, then on Saturdays showing there is no way we'll be 3-0 up at half time.

Which is why Josh Mc and KK have been benched in my team. Nico and Sam made a difference on Saturday.

Team for Exeter

True, although I still think it'll be a lot tougher than that.

Yeah so do I to be fair, i'm definitely talking ideal circumstances here. Just don't want to see another team/performance like Oxford last year and always think the league cup provides an early season chance to get the team to gel but we never seem to take that opportunity.

Team for Exeter

Bentley
Clarke Dean Egan Field
Macca Yennaris
KK Mcleod Saunders
Hogan

Sam must play as he is the only wide man we have, and both Sawyers/Mcleod are wasted on the wings. I would switch Mcleod and KK, so Mcleod plays right behind Hogan. Drop Josh (sorry he just does not do it for me), give Field a run out, give Macca and Yennaris a run out replacing Macca with Woods after 60 minutes. Bring on Sawyers for Mcleod at some point also. Not ideal as we are lacking in depth, and Sam should not be starting but will give us the balance that we did not have on Saturday imo. Will also remove several of the square pegs in round holes that we had against Huddersfield.

Team for Exeter

We don't have any wide players so how can we play 4-2-3-1 ? Surely we need to play a system that suits the players?

Fair enough. I just think that in a time when so many clubs seem to have the financial clout to buy a deep squad, resting key players and keeping them free of injury is one of those "small gains" (cliché alert!) that we should seize upon to keep us up there with them.

Enough said, though, and fair play to you... admire your passion on the subject. If we all felt your way the cups would be fun again.

Mk Dons say they are fielding a youth team* , there will be hardly a team that doesnt make at keast 4 changes.

* you can get 5-4 on Newport :sorted:

Don't want to worry you but I heard Nana and Nick Hester were being paired together in midfield as we need to show more aggression.

Bonham
Holldack Dean (c) Egan Elder
Nico Cole
Clarke Kerschbaumer Macleod
Hogan

Subs: Bentley, Mepham, McCormack, Woods, Saunders, Shaibu (we need to use the B team until we sign players), Hofmann

Last chance saloon for Bonham, the club staff have spoken about him like he's fighting for the Number 1 jersey. Time to put that to the test. If he still can't handle real-game situations then it's time to get rid IMO.

Defensively, if Dean's the captain, he has to play. Egan should play too, not sure how long YB or AB are out but they should use this game to help form their partnership, don't recall them playing with eachother in pre-season. I would also pick Elder ahead of Field, because he needs a confidence booster after a shaky debut. Holldack at RB for me as Clarke needs to be further up.

At DM, Cole seems a proper box-to-box player - would do him a world of good playing alongside NY in a proper game. Both are physical enough to deal with a battle, too.

Going forward, we need width so I would play Clarke. He's the only proper wide man we have with Gogia gone for 9 months. Between him, KK, Macleod and Hogan, we should have enough fire power to beat Exeter (who are no mugs despite their defeat on the weekend).

Would be detrimental to our league form to mess up the team too much IMO, they still need to gel and after Saturday's defeat we need to build momentum ASAP.

....and 23/10 on Exeter.....just saying....

Team for Exeter

I think we will be resting Yennaris, Macleod and Hogan. We need Josh and Elder to get match fitness so have to play and we don't have centre back options at the moment. Also with a makeshift defence we'll need our no1 playing so......

Bentley
mccormack Dean Egan Elder
Woods Josh
Clarke Kersh Saunders
Hoff

Not enough goal threat there imo but kind of a forced hand.

That's 4-2-1-1-1-1-1, then!

Play your strongest side, don't need morale on the floor already

Like you I used to enjoy the League Cup. But its time has passed. No-one takes it vey seriously now and its become just an opportunity to give the fringe players a run out. Even the semi-final and final now see lots of reserves on show. The competition needs to be euthanized; it's boring me to death these days.

Team for Exeter

Maybe it's not a priority but it would be nice (for once) to have a decent cup run, be that in the league cup or the FA cup. It might even give us a boost and I'd rather we develop a winning habit rather than a losing one, whatever the competition.

As others have said, we don't really have enough fit players in the squad to rotate much. I imagine he'll play Bonham (though personally I'd like to see Bentley in there as he still needs to work on his distribution / understanding with his new back four) and one or two others will be rested (Hogan, in particular) but otherwise will be largely the same team that played at the weekend.

Team for Exeter

as long as we make chances I don't care who we play, some energy would be nice for the 300 odd fans who are going..

I heard that if you call Dean then he has three places in the team remaining.

Sounds like a winning combo to me. Much more aggression!

I imagine that Hogan is the type of lad that would hate to be rested for this or any game given his last couple of years.

We can't flog him though, we need him for the proper 46 game season.....hopefully he hasn't even travelled
