Team selection generally

Don’t do twitter but seems a lot of people are being critical of a few players one of whom is making dire saves ,and one in and out of games with bad passes this is not a snide comment. Is it time to rest our goalkeeper ,imho we still need a forward to bury our chances. Last but by no means why do we allow ourselves to be sucked in by physical game which takes us of our style of play

No problem at all with team selection today. The same eleven which has put all-comers to the sword at GP so far this season. Would have been the same result again today, albeit against a very cynical opponent, but for two goalkeeping errors from long range shots.

If people want Daniels in instead of Bentley then they need to be put down.

No question Bentley should be our usual No1 keeper but it’s a worry if we can’t rely on our No2 to push for inclusion when Bentley has given away - what - 5/6 goals in 10 games?

As for team selection overall, I think Dean isn’t quite sure on the midfield formula for success away from home yet but it’s hard to argue with our home form where the selection has been consistent.

Referee selection is a bigger problem.
If teams are going to turn up and try and reduce the game to 30 minutes of set plays we have no hope. We need strong refs to stop this early doors or our whole style of play is countered by gamesmanship.
Today's ref (and based on the reports thread, some of our fans) are oblivious to this even happening.
How did Clement coach at all of Europe's big dogs with that style of play ?

I don't want a goalkeeper who makes regular blunders, costs goals and squanders points. I couldn't care less whose name is on the back of the shirt.

So do I but this is just a dip from Dan. He’s clearly - and by far - the better goalkeeper out of the two and I back him to get through this.

He's the better of the two without any shadow of doubt and I'm sure he'll come through this period. But I still wouldn't play him Tuesday!

Really why? Bentley cost us three points today. Maybe Bentley needs to told he can't cock up as he has done many times and think he will always be No. 1 .... needs to be DROPPED .... it's actually quite simple. Daniels maybe is not the answer longer term but deserved a crack now !

But what point does this prove in dropping him for a goalkeeper quite happy to bench warm? Daniels is clearly second best - look at his eight or nine games for us. He’s been poor in most and that doesn’t seem to me a great way of going about trying to win the game. His distribution is atrocious compared to Bentley’s.

I don't think we adapt tactically quickly enough.
Teams have seen that if they allow the midfield three of McE, Sawyers, and MacLeod to play, then they lose.
So they've started to have plans to nullify them. Villa bypassed them and Reading got numbers in the middle (and strength).
Both McE and Sawyers can provide incisive passing.
However imo McE's passing is better and he's been one of our best players this year.
So as we need to get more mobility into that midfield, and as McE has been considerably better than Sawyers this year I'd keep him, and drop Sawyers for Kamo who's been looking better and better.
In tandem with that I think it's probably worth giving Judge a go instead of MacLeod as he's looking promising although nowhere near back to his best yet.
I reckon with the extra movement from them there will be more options for everyone in the front three (as well as taken on by those two themselves).

I think Smith's preferred team is broadly the best up to this point. I think we are still punching above our weight. I don't think our squad individually is as good as many think. We are too reliant on Maupay and we have lost one of our best players in Woods. I thought we weren't great today but 6th is pretty good all things considered.

To those who would like him dropped .. how many games 1?, 2? as punishment or until Daniels makes a mistake? .. Bentley is our number one keeper and it should stay that way .. Dan will be feeling like sh*t tonight and the best thing for him is to get out there on Tuesday night rather than stew on the bench and not get a chance to get his confidence back

Because Bentley looks a bag of nerves to me at present and he has done all season as soon as he's made an error. Look at Stoke, look at Forest, look at Villa - three errors in quick succession early on. It's gone on all season and runs the risk of being seen as more than a little dip in form, starting from his pre-season performance. Everyone'll be holding their breath - supporters and team-mates alike - in the early stages of Tuesday evening and that will do no-one any good. If the next match was away next Saturday then I'd probably say leave him in, but again at Griffin Park in 72 hours time? Not for me. Take him out of the firing line.

Fortunately I'm only a supporter so I'm free to criticise and moan about whatever Dean Smith opts to do!

Agreed we some very strange 'support' these days

It’s ‘strange’ to want a goalkeeper dropped after making several big mistakes but not strange to suggest people who think that should be ‘put down’?

Have we moved the Dan Bentley thread ????

By the same criteria we should drop Maupay as he has missed at least twice as many cast iron chances as Bentley has let in soft goals. Absolute madness to consider dropping Dan.

Team selection generally

Other than Bentley and cup games, I don't think there needs to be much discussion about team selection. Few would disagree with the teams DS has put out of late. A more relevant question is why half of our team have been playing with their confidence shot to pieces after such a good start to the season? Pressure of expectation? Teams pressing us harder? Believing their own hype? Very frustrating to see the likes of Watkins, Canos, Sawyers, Bentley, etc, playing well below what we've come to expect.

Tough time at the moment as we are juggling 18 players given the injury list. Very few other options.

It's barely an injury 'list'. Part of the reason it's only 18 (which should be more than enough this early in the season) is we've loaned out a few as well. As I said earlier, a bigger question is why the XI selected aren't playing to their potential.

Seen the very impressive video clips of GK training. Seems to be all about shot stopping. I just wonder about pyschological aspects as Daniel appears to have suffered from several lapses of concentration, admittedly with very little to do throughout most of our games so far.

Dean picked our fit and, in many cases, rested ‘home’ first XI so no argument yesterday with selection, although Ollie and Romaine have been under par for a few games now. In the event, three of the front six (Ollie, Romaine and Said) were miles off the pace and Mc & Mac not at their best either. Add in goalkeeping howlers, the Reading anti-football and pathetic ref and I’ll take a point and Top 6 all day long. What I can’t fathom are the inability to make changes before the 65th minute and leaving no-one up at corners when we have pace to burn on counter-attacks. Similarly, we never vary play with an occasional (and I stress occasional) long ball over the top or switch things tactically, e.g. to five at the back. I know there’s ‘the Brentford way’, and thank the Lord for that as it’s given me the best football in my lifetime, but every team we play knows how we set up and how we play. We’re innovative in so much, but strangely tactically/strategically inflexible during the 90 mins. On selection, both Ollie and Romaine deserve to be ‘rested’ now, but I guess unlikely with Said suspended. Time for Dean to prove his worth.

Team selection generally

The only question re team selection at the moment is how we rotate with the limited options we have. We’ve not really managed it well enough so far but there are signs that Canos and Judge are improving and will be better options going forward. Moses back in the squad is a plus and hopefully DaSilva will prove a useful addition after the break. With the (eventual) addition of Marcondes and Henry we should end up with a v high quality bench and be in a better position to cope with 3 game weeks. At the moment we just need to battle through any ‘tiredness’ or dips in form and do as best as we can.

Frank Blunstone managed with 14 including 2 keepers.

You’re comparing apples with oranges. We have seven subs these days instead of one. That squad size formula was forced on Blunstone by a short sighted dictorate and paved the way for 25 years of mediocrity afterwards.

Team selection generally

I'd like to see Judge start ahead of Sawyers in the midfield 3 on Tuesday and see if he gives us the ball carrying and shoot from outside the box midfielder we're lacking.

If this is true, then why is Daniels our back up keeper?

Anyone who was at Arsenal (and most of us were!) would agree that Daniel Bentley is a far superior keeper in every department to LD. No-one is undroppable of course but to suggest that we hang our keeper out to dry after a couple of mistakes is simply madness. If our players were the finished article they simply wouldn't be here. We have to accept mistakes as part and parcel of their development and over the course of a season I suspect Daniel will be responsible for saving us far more points than he's "cost" us.

Team selection generally

If Bonham were avaliable it would be a harder decision as he is competent with the ball at his feet. Daniels isn't although he is a decent shot stopper.

Personally I’m looking forward to seeing the following team out on the pitch.
Bentley or Daniels
Dalsgaard Konsa Mepham Henry
Odubajo Mcreachan Da Silva
Benrahma Maupay Watkins.

I would bet you a lot of money we will never see this team given there are 12 players in it!!

If we are short on the bench, the idea is the B team players can be be made available. Surprised Coote or Cole were not on bench

Cole can’t play.

Coote isn’t good enough, imo.
