Team v "them"

It's all about the result. Doesn't matter how the points come back to TW8 but we need them desperately. For me we can't afford to have Canos and Swift on the same pitch as relying on 2 rookies is asking too much.

I'm struggling to fill the striker and left midfield positions. Experience or potential?

Button

Nico Dean Barbet Bidwell

Josh Woods

Macca Judge ???

I've put Macca right midfield because he's better there than Woods in my opinion but he can still come inside and make a 3 to sort things out when needed.

Woods plays much better in central midfield.

Team v "them"

I am going to keep banging on , as I have done since before Christmas, studied the way they play and it can work............so..............

Button
Dean Barbet Bidwell
Nico Woods Macca Josh Swift
Judge
Hoff

Now, some are going to say "playing them out of their position" .....don't buy into that.....DS could start with that and alter easily make sure at least 2 stay back and defend and at least 2 cover midfiled , that gives you Swift,Nico,Woods to run on also covers any of Swifty's defensive frailties, Judge free role and Hoff commanding their penalty area.
I know it is not "the system" but it needs changing.....teams have sussed us.
You could even drop Nico back and have Barbet teaming with Macca as a solid defensive midfield, Nico ,Dean and Bidwell should have enough experience to handle those roles.

Coach them up,set them up and tell them what they need to do,with some instruction from the bench...........sorted!!
edit: Oh and Button to COMMAND his area by shouting orders to HIS defence..................double sorted.

Team v "them"

Oh and Button to COMMAND his area by shouting orders to HIS defence..................double sorted.

Funny you should mention that but I've been thinking the unthinkable lately in order to reason out why out defence is so porous.

As wonderful a shot stopper as he is does Button command the penalty box enough and does he do enough to marshall the defence? A placid GK nearly always creates a nervous defence. You guys/gals on Ealing Rd will know more than me.

Has Macca ever played right midfield for us? Has Woods played much better central?

I think the answer to both questions is no. We need a tackler in the middle of the park. All the games we won under Carsley Macca played central and Woods wide right.

Macca has played right for us this season and did regularly under Uwe and Warbs. I wouldn't be unhappy to see him in the middle and Woods right but only as an interim fix.

This is probably hypothetical as neither are fully fit yet... but if they were, I would be tempted to try Colin in midfield and Hogan up front. Colin has a bit more about him than Nico and therefore probably able to make a more effective contribution in midfield. Nico has pace to burn, so will not be caught out for pace and can overlap well as RB. Not quite sure how you would configure the midfield with so many right-footers, but we managed the opposite conundrum perfectly well last year when Jota played on the right and cut inside. (Jake to supply left-footed crosses, on the overlap).

Macca should have had some game time yesterday. He just wont be anywhere new match fit. Expect some miss timed tackles!

You're dead right. He should have been on, if only to be ready for next Saturday.

Totally agree he is a great shot stopper , but I watch him carefully (mostly away games) and he always seems rushed and nervous when he has the ball. Maybe I am being over critical, but as you say,he makes me nervous when watching, so does that also reflect to his defence.........and before everyone starts accusing me of picking on him,I am not and I am glad he is with us , but sometimes it makes me smile when peeps say he will play for England one day........no chance and he is far from being best goalie in Championship and way off premiership..........IMHO!

If Macca can play right back for us then right midfield will be no problem. My logic is do you want to get a 5/10 from Woods or a 7/10? I don't think he's had a 7/10 playing RM this season even when he scored v Reading.

Likewise I think Macca can give us a 7/10 wide right (best crosser in the club, good defensively and can be a goal threat) but will sense if the middle of the park is being lost and then tuck in to make a three without much thought whereas Woods/Canos/Saunders might not.

But I suspect like you Dean will think we need him in the middle and play Woods right.

Team v "them"

Back 5 picks itself. If Crofts signs I would have him and Macca at the base with Woods wide right, Judge centre, Swift left and pull a name out of hat for the striker berth if we don't sign loanee.

You are right DB is a great shot stopper, but seems undecided on whether to catch or punch when the ball is crossed into the area.

He's not alone with that dilemma amongst modern day keepers.

It's not a great option but I think it's the best we've got at the moment.

Woods played well at Charlton and Wolves at RM. He can protect the full back and holds possession well. I understand your logic but prefer Macca in the 'search and destroy' role in the middle of the park.

Team v "them"

After yesterday's 'performance', I would put the development squad out for the next game.

And by the way, I've seen enough of Hoffman to suggest he does not merit being in the 1st team squad.

Team v "them"

Button
Dean BArbet JOC
NIco Woods MAC Josh Bidwelll
Judge
Hofmann

Like the principle but two issues are Barbet is not good enough physically yet and got bullied on more than one occasion last match by a not particularly by Charlton attacker so Dean needs to be the main centre back in a three.
Jack O'Connell is slow as feck and would potentially be exposed if Bidwell has gone upfield. Gets badly exposed enough as part of a four.
Personally I think the two major underperformers are Josh McE and Djuricin recently and need to be dropped now. Swift is lazy defensively but does ghost past people and opens up space so probably worth being the one we carry.

If playing the same back 4 then our defence picks itself right now due to injuries so its Button, Nico, Dean, Barbet, Bidwell.

The striking position. Hofmann deserves his chance now - Djuricin has blown it and needs to work his nuts off in training to displace Hofmann who deserves a run of 3 or 4 games.

So then there's 5 midfielders to pick. We need steel so Macca has got to come back in. Josh needs to grow some nuts and man up. Woods even though is a midget gets stuck in and has the quality going forwards so I think he's a no brainer too. So defensive midfield is Macca and Woodsy for me. Then you've got 3 attacking midfielders to pick from: Judge/Swift/Canos/Vibe. For me I think I'd put Judge on the left as he'll put more of a shift in than Swift and cover, Canos on the right and Swift behind him. If Canos is having an off day as he sometimes does I'd give Josh Clarke a run out.

So for me its:
-------------Button-----------
-Nico-Dean-Barbet-Bidwell-
--------Macca---Woods-----
Canos------Swift------Judge
------------Hoffman----------

Subs: Clarke for Canos if not performing. Josh for Macca/Woods only if needed. Vibe (or Djuricin) for Hoffman if he's having a mare.

Woods Mac Judge Josh KK Swift

With our forwards being so woeful at present may as well play 6 in midfield, I appreciate KK is not everyone's favourite player but might give us slightly more steel then Canos

Also with this formation it will confuse QPR and negate their centre backs as they will have nobody to mark!!!!

Team v "them"

Don't know enough about QPR but can't see us causing them too many problems so I would pack our midfield and hopefully a fit Macca will feature. If that donkey Clint Hill is playing then I would keep Marco otherwise the Hoff should start and our MF need to get within 10 yards of him when the ball is inevitably lumped from the back. I am hoping that this will be the game when form goes out the window but not overly optimistic and would settle for a draw now.

RaRa mate assures me they were the worst he's ever seen them yesterday at MK so reckon it could be turgid stuff next week. Reckons they will be looking for a massive improvement and will be up for it.
Let's hope Harlee and Sam can communicate and get every player to understand the importance of the game and the result.

I stand on Ealing Road and I never hear him shouting or organising his defence and his lack of command in his penalty area will prevent him reaching the very top in my opinion. He generally gets lambasted by Harlee Dean when not coming for the ball and rightly so.

That's very interesting, thank you. As a centre half for 20+ years albeit at a Sunday league level, the defence I played in always performed better with a vocal and confident keeper. I imagine many of you out there will say the same.

I think it's vitally important for the GK to be the defenders eyes in the back of their heads. Maybe the defence will be better when an experience leader like Bjelland returns? Until then...

Finding it hard to pick an X1 as frankly there are some who played on Sat who don't deserve to be considered at all.

Mac has to play, that's for sure imo

I know mate but Josh is a passenger bar a handful of good games, Swift doesn't work hard enough imo and Marco's probably already booked his flight to Vienna.

I'd throw Clarke in as well, his attitude seemed ok early season.

Just hope we don't rollover on Sat like we have at Rovrum and v Charlton and some pride and passion is restored

If this is the right thread, this is Button's Achilles heel. Been saying this for 2 seasons.

All those sides look so depressingly weak

absolutely. take out Judge and it's as weak as we've been in many years.

Feck me.............. and he signed for Liverpool?
Time to get the speakers out at Jersey Road and play some "vociferous" crowd recordings.....jeez!
