Team Vs Everton

Let's put yesterday behind us, who starts on Saturday assuming Rico and Ben are not fit.

I would be tempted to start Onyeka instead of Janelt to give us more impetus from the off.
When Onyeka is on it, he’s worth his place in the starting 11. He’s just been so inconsistent. I thought Onyeka was reasonable when he came on yesterday.

Damsgaard Norgaard Jensen
Shade Maupay Mbeumo
Can Maupay play vs Everton? If not Wissa starts.

Do we know Damsgaard is ready to start …

Hickey to LB with Ajer at RB. Everton are going to make this hard for us and Ajer's pace going forward should be an asset.

Team Vs Everton

Don't get Ajer at RB, not based on the empirical evidence of him playing in that position for us.
Played RB towards the end of our first season in the premier league and did pretty well. We had a very good run and he put in some decent performances, scored a good goal from that position against Southampton at home.

Will be up against McNeil as the right footed inverted left winger in their 4-1-4-1 system.

Not confident he copes well with tricky wingers given he struggled in 1v1 situations against Fraser for Newcastle......stands too far off an opponent which you don't want to do against a Dyche side given it will be DCL or tall man Beto up top.

Roerslev won't give him the luxury of space to exploit in our own 3rd.

I’ll be very disappointed if we play both Norgaard and Janelt together at home against Everton. I’ll replace Janelt with FTT.

Pretty sure that McNeil is left footed

Quite right or left on this.....plays on his natural side on the left wing.

I still think he's someone that has to be well marshalled as he's probably their most creative attacker....likes to draw a challenge and will dance around the defending when they over commit.

I'm so convinced we could be a fabulous team playing 4-4-2 against defensive sides at home:

Roeslev or Ajer / Collins / Pinnock / Hickey

Bryan / Noorgard / Jensen / KLP

Schade / Wissa

Team Vs Everton

Our squad is looking painfully thin.

Rico out, Mee probably out as well?

Could be a long couple of months.

I have my ideas about how we should line up at home without Henry. But struggling to translate that into a fixed visual to post on here.

But it would involve 4 attacking players on the pitch instead of three, and a more fluid defensive shape.

The issue we have IMO is the lack of attacking options in the middle.

We need MD and others back sooner rather then later. A lot rides on MJ shoulders atm.

What I’m imagining is something like this:

You basically have an extra forward on the pitch, to give us more conventional width in the absence of Henry.

The “full-backs” in this system are therefore able to come in a bit narrower on the ball to support the midfield which will obviously be a man down. This really suits the strengths of of both Hickey and Janelt. If one gets caught up-field, the other can tuck in to create a back three.

Likewise Wissa is very strong technically, so playing a little deeper at times, picking up the ball in the half spaces and having runners beyond him creating space I can see working really well.

I know it’s unlikely we’ll see something like this but at home vs Everton I think we should be brave. It is a long season ahead without Henry and it will necessarily change the way we play.

I remember his injury in the promotion season and initially we just stuck Sørensen there. It was like we were playing with the handbrake on. Not good. It took ages for Frank to try something outside the box with Canós LWB and we suddenly we were well balanced again and looked our brilliant best.

I’m not sure why we’d experiment with odd formations at home to a Sean Dyche side. We play best in a 4-3-3, they’ll clog up midfield and you can be sure that balls above shoulder height into the Everton final third they’ll defend all day. We’ll need to be patient, try continually to move them around, then play balls into any space and move quickly. Personally, I hope Damsgaard is available.

We play best in a 4-3-3
Define “we”

Our starting XI as it has been? Without Henry, that’s no longer an option.

Ultimately we will adapt the team as needed to adhere to our own principles of play. If we don’t have a LB that slots into a 4 to gives us natural width and the outlet of raw pace on that side then just sticking anyone in there and playing the same way “because we play best in a 4-3-3” will not work.

We could move Hickey across and give our RB more attacking freedom, or we might adjust our formation slightly and see a different left-sided player give us that natural width higher up the pitch. That gives us a different threat, and perhaps more of a tangible goal threat, from that side. We have KLP that could play that role, for example.

Only fear playing them will be set pieces, they are full of giants so I’d be happier with Ajer and Schade starting to help combat that

Easier to adapt one player than all eleven. As I’ve written elsewhere, Hickey has played the ‘stay back in a 3’ in a back 4, so logical for him to continue on the left. Roerslev IMHO is quick and has played well with Mbeumo as he likes to overlap and stay wide, so could then become the pace on the right.

One thing is certain though, Everton won't have a clue how to set up. Looking at the above suggestions it is really a complete guess at what we plan to do.

Team Vs Everton

Love VJ but just seems a ‘body’ on the pitch at the moment when we play at home and that isn’t a criticism of him.

I thought he played very well against Bournemouth!

Down to the bare bones...that's a £100m+ team with 11 full internationals starting .;)

Do we know if Damsgaard is fit to play yet hasn’t even been in the squad lately
