Team vs Exeter

Lee
Logan Legge Osborne Woodman
McGinn Douglas Forrester Wood
Donaldson Oyeleke

Subs: Moore, Eger, O'Connor, Reeves, Alexander.

Very weak left hand side, need reinforcements for Saturday. May as well start with Oyeleke as he'll probably offer more than MacDonald and Alexander put together, looked good in pre season and has pace. Forrester has travelled so should start and take the pressure off Reeves. Sooner Diagouraga is back, the better. No room for Weston, Saunders, Bean, MacDonald or Spillane.

Team vs Exeter

No real changes.

Lee
Logan, Osborne, Legge or preferably Eger, Woodman
McGinn, Douglas, Forrester, Weston
Donaldson, Alexander

Subs Moore, Eger or Legge, Spillane, KOC, MacDonald

Well according to Twitter, Wood is fit but not travelling. Must be wondering how bad Weston has to be to get a place in this team.

If that was how we lined up wouldn't be unhappy,Wood is not a left back, but after seeing what Weston and Saunders have offered over the last 3 games l would think he can do better.

For me something different .

Lee
O Connor, Legge, Osborne, Woodman
Logan, Douglas, Reeves, McGinn
Macdonald, Donaldson

Subs

Saunders, Eger, Alexander, Moore, Forrester

Don't think Weston warrants a place in the squad from what I witnessed Saturday, Kev did ok at right back last season and a steady head isn't a bad thing, thus experimenting with Logan on the right wing as he looked good pushing forward at times. I'll probably get slated for this but reckon it could work ?

Weston and Saunders need a good kick up the backside so they are left out.

Makes for an interesting idea but if we lined up like that, neither of our full backs would ever come out of their own half to support any attacks.

In the interview about Eger signing did Uwe hint that Eger could possibly play as a holding role in midfield?

I wouldn't expect more than 2 or 3 changes from Saturday. Given how Weston played at Exeter in the 2nd leg of the JPT last season, I'd be inclined to give him another chance.

This game might be the best indication so far of where we fit in the league: most sides will win at home to Yeovil, and most will lose away to Sheff Utd (I'm guessing) so Exter may give us a sign (not that one game proves anything) of where we stand.

Team vs Exeter

I'd go for:

----------------Lee

Logan---Legge--Osborne--Woodman

McGinn--Bean---Douglas----Weston

------MacDonald--Donaldson

Subs: Moore, Eger, O'Connor, Forrester, Alexander

I don't think Forrester is seen as a central midfielder in a 4-4-2, and he'll get his chance on the wings instead. I'd also rather introduce him from the bench than throw him straight in away from home. In terms of the wingers, if we were playing most sides I'd go with McGinn and Saunders, but given how well Weston played at Exeter 6 months ago, I just feel it could be one of his nights when he shines again. Saunders doesn't often have much impact as a substitute, so his place on the bench goes to Forrester.

Reeves has the potential to boss the Griffin Park midfield this season, so I'd save him for Saturday and wouldn't want to over-use him at this stage of his career. Bean is more than capable of doing a good job in his place. From what we've seen upfront so far, Donaldson should start, preferably alongside a new signing but that looks unlikely with just over 24 hours until the match. Alexander or MacDonald? I'll go with Charlie for this one.

I know it's not in the spirit of the GPG, but I think the most important thing is that there is no need to panic after 1 poor away performance and make wholesale changes (I'm not counting Hereford as it was the formation that killed our chances of winning, not the players).

That was last season...this is now ...

The same principles apply though. Exeter generally play with wing-backs. Every time he beat the right wing-back there was a massive hole for him to exploit, which pulled one of the 3 centre-backs out of position, causing chaos in their defence which Saunders and Alexander both took full advantage of. I don't agree with statements that Weston has "got worse" or "more inconsistent" - he's always been inconsistent, and will shine in certain, unpredictable games. From last season's evidence, the unpredictability for tomorrow night's game is slightly reduced. He does need to improve his consistency this season though, or questions will have to be asked of his future at the end of the season.

Exeter play with wing backs, so we need some cover for our defenders and Wood appears to have been left behind. I'd be inclined to go with McGinn and a central midfielder as the "wide" players, in addition to 2 central mid-fielders. After Saturday, I'd leave Weston and Saunders on the naughty step. Maybe it's an opportunity for Spillane?

Reeves, Pim, Moore, Forrester(is he fit?)KOC subs - would drop Weston and Alexander entirely

I can't go now and if the old missus can't get a lift back then she wont be going and will be mightily unhappy as has to get back as up to the Ebor on Wednesday.

Although this would never happen, I would like to see a 4-2-3-1 formation in most away games. We got out-muscled in the central midfield area on Saturday.

If this Forrester guy turns out to be what we have been missing then he would play the 'trequartista' role with Bean providing more steel in the centre.

If Saunders play tomorrow, it will be his 50th league game for us... I still can't work him out. He always seems to need a long run in the team... but then his form doesn't carry on long enough to warrant a starting stint...

I quite like the look of that, would deffinately go with Bean over Reeves tomorrow, we need a bit more bite in midfield and he was exceptional against them last year in the second leg of the jpt. No matter what we think of Weston they will be cacking themselves about him after the last match with them so will probably double up on him allowing spaces for Forrester and Mcginn more freedom to feed Donaldinho. Of course he wont go with this and will probably go with something like this.

Mcginn Bean Douglas Weston

Lost patience with Saunders, as noted by others Weston gts the nod on the basis that he's due his good one-in-three game against oppo that will worry about him. Thought long and hard about forwards but Alexander just got the nod as he's more of a physical presence. Bean in because we do need a bit more bite in the middle and although we don't have a great deal of creativity with him and Donaldson you would look for them to win the ball and play it tp McGinn and Weston to do the damage in the attacjing third.

Like to see Forrester have a run out at some point although we shouldn't expect too much as he'll be lacking in match fitness.

No keeper on the bench

Yes, this is interesting, though I think Legge would consider himself unfortunate to be dropped after his performance on Saturday.
If Forrester is still not considered fit then I would like to see Reeves get a chance to fulfil that more forward role.
I've complemented Donaldson's work all over the pitch, elsewhere; I would like to see him pushed right up top, as here, and told to stay there and see if we can replicate his goalscoring exploits of last season.
I am beginning to despair of Weston but give him another go if you must.

Team vs Exeter

I understand the need to mix it about a little, but Bean is not suited to Uwe's team! I like the bloke but he cannot pass or control a ball to the standard that we are trying to reach!

Anyone at Hereford would have noticed this. Yes he was playing on the right, but that doesn't change your ability to receive and pass.

Team vs Exeter

After Saturday I think Wood should be considered, dropping Weston to the bench. Case also to be made for Mac starting upfront alongside CD. We also need to refrain from making any tactical changes for the time being.

I thought that by the end of the Sheff United match we seemed a very small side. I don't think any of our midfield offers much threat from corners or free kicks... Maybe Spillane on the right wing would solve this?

Team vs Exeter

Not going tonight, but also can't even listen on BeesPlayer cause i've got work 5-11! gutted, going to be out of the loop on this one.

Hard team to pick for tonight, a few decisions to make!

Not ahead of Mcginn.

Lee, Legge, Logan, Karleigh, Woodman, McGinn, Donaldson and Douglas pick themselves IMO. Perm 3 from the rest and hope that the 3 who get chosen actually turn up.

Yep, I think that sums it up nicely. It also goes to show we're not a million miles away in terms of personell. Add a fit Dave and find a way of making Myles turn up consistently and we're maybe only a striker short. The rest of the players are fine as back-up.

Personally, I'd take a chance and go with Weston, Reeves and Charlie tonight.

Agree with that, a few Exeter fans aren't very confident about tonight's game. God if we turn up tonight, i feel a win.

This match is a great opportunity for a win, and our first away win of the season. Paul Tisdale said he worried his players may be distracted given their Liverpool cup tie in a week...let's hope he's right. :) Exeter 0-1 Brentford. Mac with the goal.

I hope so too. I've no idea how close to match fitness he is, but I'd like to think he's significantly closer by now than when he arrived.

Don't think a Tisdale side will allow themselves to get distracted personally.
