Team vs Oldham

Saturday will be fascinating from a number pf perspectives as it will reveal if there were different views on team lineups and tactics between Uwe and Warbs. Will we stick to 4-3-3 or revert to a more traditional 4-4-2 and will we persist with Mac at RB instead of Logan? What of the goalkeeping selection and the strikers?
I suspect that Warbs will be more of a team player with his squad and possibly listen to their views more. Partly that may come from his experience working outside football where you get the biggest payback by integrating staff into the process giving them a sense of ownership.
This thread is about the team but given uncertainty about the availability of Harris and Dougie and a lack of answers to the above matters, I haven't a clue. However, I have a sense that we will see something different. As I started it and assuming Harris and Dougie are fit I'm going for [ 4-4-2 ]
Button
McCormack Dean Craig Bidwell
Saville Douglas Forshaw Harris
Grigg Donaldson

We've won 7 out of 8 in the league, so no need for any changes in shape IMO. The only position to contest is the central striker, whether it's Trotta, Grigg or El Alagui. I think Douglas will be fit, but if Harris is out I'd go with Fillo as our win record has been good with him in the side, and he's a more similar player on the left to Kadeem than Grigg.

Id love for Warburton to start putting Donaldson through the middle instead of out wide. But no major changes required according to recent form!

If Grigg is to start it has to be in the middle.

I think he is/ will be a good player. To pay the money we have , then play him out of position is madness.

Farid for the last 20 / 25 whatever the score.

Although by his own admission Clayton prefers playing out wide, suggest Grigg will probably start down the middle

Donaldson has scored around 30 goals over a season and a half playing largely out wide. Almost without exception he's the hardest working player on the pitch, often picking the ball up or tackling to win it back near our penalty area before going forward and sometimes almost miraculously getting the ball back once he's run half the length of the field. He doesn't look to be doing this grudgingly or with the clunkiness of a player in an unfamiliar and unnatural position. I really can't understand why so many people still bang on about trying to play him as a traditional English centre forward down the middle when his clearly defined role both suits him and has resulted in him scoring so many goals!

Team vs Oldham

Given the fact MB has agreed to pay the best part of £500K for Grigg, I hope he is given another chance to prove himself as a centre forward between Clayton and Kadeem.
Marcello has done OK but he's a loanee and very much a penalty box player who to be fair has worked hard recently to adapt.
If Douglas is fit he'll start I'm sure but I trust Logan is straining at the leash to prove he should be permanent right back so Mac can beef up the midfield.

Really? CD plays better and offers more to the side when not playing through the middle, he isn't a conventional striker, we have played to his strengths for the last 18 months and he has scored a shed load of goals and worried most defences in this league by playing on the right.

Assuming everyone is fit then the only decision is who goes up front in the middle, Trotta, Grigg or Farid. That's a tough call Trotta has been scoring, Grigg has netted a couple recently and Farid is the most clinical finisher in the club. I'd go for Farid to start.

The problem as I see it is Farid is all about winning aerial battles but it has been repeated over and over again the owner wants us to play a passing game and keep the ball on the ground......Grigg or Trotts for me

I partly agree but reality is then who would play in Donaldson's position. Donaldson plays well on the right of three man attack and the freedom actually makes him more effective in front of goal. I am assuming Harris will not be fit for Saturday so I agree time to try Fillo in that position as we have no natural replacements and Grigg looks fish out of water there so my team:

Button

McCormack
Dean
Craig
Bidwell

Forshaw
Douglas
Saville

McCormack
Grigg/Trotta
Fillo

Subs: Lee, Logan, Nugent, Diagouraga, Saunders, Trotta/Grigg, Farid

-------- Button

Mac Dean Craig Bidwell

Forshaw Douglas Savile

Donaldson Grigg Fillo*

* Harris if fit

Why have you dropped Donaldson, has he gone to Wigan?

How long though can Farid's claims be ignored though...he's done all that can be asked in the time afforded, goals assists etc,etc and has done so much more than Grigg to justify a start. Trotta has tailed off a little in the last couple of games but before that did show a much better work ethic. To pick Grigg just on the basis of him being our big signing sends out the wrong message (in all fairness he has showed glimpses of a return to form of late but enough to justify inclusion over the other two???)

Think we'll see Logan in from the cold sooner rather than later. Button should start based upon the number of clean sheets he has kept of late but I must admit my preference is for Lee as I think he's the safer pair of hands.

I tend to agree that it's been tough on Farid and he's made am impact when he's been given the opportunity lately. His goals vs time on the pitch is very good and maybe he's unfairly become a supersub.
I'd start Grigg but I wouldn't be upset if we decided to start with Farid up top.

Team vs Oldham

Maybe the wrong thread but here goes.

If we ever play 442 or 4132 as some have suggested, then Donaldson in my mind is not one of the two up top. For me Grigg and Farid ( yes no Trotta, ) would be the two.

Farid is seen as a good header of the ball and can be used as a target ( maybe as others are incapable of adding this to their game, why he probably looks that much better ) but he can also play the ball on the ground.

Both Grigg and Farid need more game time and this is the time to do it. One for 65 mins the other to replace, while we still play 433.

Team vs Oldham

Think a lot may depend on which players were Warbs boys as he will want to give them every opportunity

Was interested to read Alpinaes comments regarding how Warbs wants to play I think we could be very surprised with the performance and possibly the team

To be fair, Grigg played in his preferred position at Notts County, scored, was unlucky not to score another and was several people's pick for MOTM. I realise you're a Farid fan - as am I - but Grigg's last league performance should see him given the chance to start IMO.

Team vs Oldham

Why ? Button kept loads of clean sheets recently

Exactly right. Uwe used to get slated for tinkering and that's exactly what some posters are wanting.................it can only be the GPG

Team vs Oldham

Yes button has kept lots of clean sheets but lees better at distribution, commanding his area and I think the defence will have more confidence in him. When a ball comes to the edge of the area there seems to be quite often uncertainty as to who should have it. Always preferred RL which is not me saying button is rubbish its me saying RL is better!! Would RL have kept the same amount of clean sheets in the games mentioned, I think so!

Team vs Oldham

I agree that Lee commands his area better than Button, who is hesitant to come off his line, but Button's distribution is much better. If we are to maintain a high-tempo game, Button is my preference. I can't imagine that Warburton will make many changes except those forced by injury.

Lee's is not better at distribution, Button distributes the ball quickly and accurately Lee punts the ball long after a lot of dithering and deliberation, Button is much better in that area, whilst Lee does have a better command of his area Lee takes more of a shot stopper/last line role Button is a Sweeper Keeper, with the strength in defence this is the big factor as to why Button is preferred, he suits the way we want to play. I have no problem with Button as our first choice we are in a very privileged position to have 2 such quality goalkeepers in our ranks.

If no injury problems same as Notts County. Guess we all know why?

Farid has earned a start

Assuming Harris is still injured:

Lee

Forshaw Saville
Donaldson Farid Grigg

Subs: Button, Nugent, Douglas, Diagouraga, Saunders, Fillo, Trotta.

Think it was the right decision to keep Shay out of the team during our unbeaten run. But this feels like the start of a new chapter and I think Shay has served his time on the sidelines. Moreover, I think Alan Mac has more to offer than the current non-fully fit version of Jonathan Douglas in the holding midfield role.

Team vs Oldham

..............and the reason is..............

He's scored goals, made goals and had an impact on games in the time he has been afforded on a consistant basis. Something that cannot be said for his rivals for a starting berth.

Agree with all of this, except that unlike Grigg, Farid has been played through the middle in his preferred position every time he's come on. That's not to denegrate his contributions which have been excellent, but Grigg showed his quality when he got his chance in his natural position at Notts County.

Think on balance Grigg has had far more opportunity to prove himself in his favoured central position than Farid has this year and had far less an impact in terms of goals and assists. I didn't see Griggs performance against Notts County but entirely trust your judgement on this one.......however one swallow does not a summer make and I do genuinely feel that Farid has earned an opportunity on merit.

Not that you've been peddling it but the myth that Farid can't play the ball along the deck or fit in with our passing game and makes us play long is just that a fallicy based upon little evidence other than a throw away quote from Uwe after one game. Farid's assists (primarily for CD) have shown a player with a deft touch who can definately fit into a passing side. My concern about Farid isn't around his touch but his mobility and match fitness- the latter would come with game time and maybe he would find the extra yard he appears to have lost following his awful injury as his match sharpness returns. His finishing ability, heading, commitment and awareness have all been proved.

To summarise I do think Farid deserves a run in the side however I entirely understand the case for Grigg starting- he undoubtedly has ability and is our major signing this season- and all I hope is that everyone gets a fair crack of the whip under the new management and that we fully utilise all of the talent we have at our disposal.
