Team vs Villa

Looking beyond today and to a best case for next week we could/should have a stronger more resilient side;

Or play Ghoddos at LWB and push Janelt into the midfield.

I’m still pretty uninspired by the attack but that side looks far harder to beat and should have better ball retention... both of which we will need against a decent Villa!

Moving beyond that, and barring further injuries, that side should give Wolves and Palace a good game.

Last season I think that was mostly due to injury. If I recall correctly we were missing norgaard and it was pinnock’s first game back, and he had an awful match

Could not give a toss about the lineup. It doesn't matter. GET BEHIND WHOEVER IS PLAYING IN RED & WHITE.
They need our support. Whatever is happening on the pitch, even if we look dogshit, we need to be behind them. Whoever is on the pitch needs encouragement. Moaners and groaners can join the absent list for all I care. The squad need to know we are behind them, backing them and helping them through a tough period.

Might work at sometime during the game but can't see it holding firm for 90 minutes.

The pace in attack excites me.

I'll be honest, there's possibly as many goals in that front line as there is in Wissa and Maupay at the moment. The Wissa/Maupay combo in a 532 could be a disaster in all honesty. Have we got any other attackers we could try in a 2?

We had first choice full backs, midfield and forwards last season

I really haven't got a clue what would work best. Your team is probably as good as any. 3 forwards was pretty ineffectual yesterday, partly due to poor service partly due to poor movement. It's a lot to expect Jensen to come in and then suddenly we create loads against the form team in the league. I'm not convinced Damsgaard should start, but given he's looked okay as a sub, he probably deserves a chance. FTT was a liability yesterday.

I think he will actually go 532 at home and go for damage limitation, with the odd counter attack. It's really difficult to see us scoring though with no Mbeumo and no height/pace up front. We've created next to nothing in the last 2 games.

I think there's an argument to start Mads at RB, purely because it's his specialised position and we are playing so many out of position already. Only TF knows to what extent his confidence is shot to pieces. If it's really gone, then he can't start, but he has been very effective in that position against the best teams in the league last season.

One way might be to set up to take advantage as much as possible of Villa's famously high defensive line ie sit deep in a low block but with our two most pacy forwards (Wissa and Olakigbe?) ready to latch on to balls hit over the top. This would also need a midfield that included our best forward passers. So, in terms of personnel:

Sure, it is a lot to ask of Olakigbe, and I very much doubt TF will do this, but it's an idea! ?‍♂️

Just for this game we need strong, aggressive players - no lightweights, no flair. If necessary put Goode on to knock them about a bit.

For a team that play a risky high line I'm surprised by the number advocating a 3-5-2 low block and damage limitation exercise.

It'll play into their hands and with Luiz and Digne suspended it's borderline ridiculous.

I'm sure Charlie's a lovely bloke, and I know he's had his problems, but he hasn't played 1st team football since God knows when and would be so far out of his depth against Villa. He's not the answer.

Why? Draw them in, encourage them to bring their line as close to halfway as possible and then hit decent balls over the top for pacy forwards to run onto.

We did very similar against Southampton away in the League Cup a few years back. Hassenhuttl loved a high line and a similar approach to the above worked very well in creating a lot of chances.

I'm not serious about Goode. The problem is that we have an understrength defence and our current forwards aren't good enough to outwit Villa. It's going to be an all hands on deck game.

That high line is breached by playing with width through wide attackers, Arsenal had a little joy through both Martinelli (Konsa) and Saka (Digne) last night.

Can't say I've seen them opened up down the middle and if it's Wissa and Maupay up top trying to connect with the long ball over the top it's not a tactic that will come off (imo).

I want us to play with a bit of natural width and have runners making diagonal runs into the inside channel from precision passes from our midfield (and defenders if Collins is available).

That’s a ridiculous summing up. We are not a sinking ship. We are a team who only last Saturday comfortably beat Luton. We have now lost Bryan but we will have an international midfield next week , a strong defence (we are not letting many in) but I accept our attack does look light at this level. We are not the Titanic.

If we had the quality of Mbeumo and Schade on the flanks that might work but with only Wissa and perhaps Olakigbe available (of our strikers withe some pace) it might be better to go with the (less sophisticated admittedly) tactic of dropping decent balls anywhere in behind their back four in the hope that two nippy strikers could take advantage.

Don’t think there is any guarantee Jensen is back. Would’ve hoped he could of made the bench for Forest. Our midfield without him could get overrun. I wouldn’t mind seeing Norgaard, Jensen and Damsgaard if possible.

We’re going to need a tactical master class to outwit old Good Ebening’ in this one. I don’t know what that looks like but hopefully TF does. There’s a part of me that thinks we will need a long ball option however and wonder if MPH might start to perform the ‘target man’ role.

I'd go 433 against Villa at home. They are the form team so a low block with our current injuries unlikely to keep them.out for.90 mins. At least with 3 up front we might give them something to think about and maybe nick the points. Better if Jensen involved.

5-3-2 with Wissa and Maupay just doesn’t work for me - we’re not scoring and we’re still conceding anyway. Would like to see KLP on his preferred side, with Ghoddos also up top. Wissa, Damsgaard and Onyeka to come from the bench as required.

This villa side deserve the respect of this backline, even at home. But where are the counter attacks coming from in this 532? We've no Henry to bring it out from the back with his pace, no toney to go long to, and no mbeumo to break through with runs down the right. Leaves us trying to go through the middle, I.E. It's all up to Jensen. Hope he's up to it coming back from injury!

Not that I have any better ideas tbh

Decent shout, does mean we're dropping roerslev (to me on form he obviously doesn't get in over Ghoddos) so now it's more of a 352 with wingers at wingback instead of defenders

I’d say LWB for KLP so he can cut in and shoot when attacking, also think it’s closer to his natural position. Really think we’ve been missing pace in the wingback/ fullback positions.

Ghoddos has had a little run at rb already whereas KLP has only played lwb with hull and in friendlies, so it'd be a bigger adjustment for KLP to go rwb compared to Ghoddos

Creative players in a defensive formation, can look like a 433 in possession when KLP pushes, a 352 when both wing backs push up for the counter, or even a 343 if we're desperate for a goal and Damsgaard moves to the join the attack from left wing. But most likely given the form gap between us lately I imagine it'll mostly sit back in a 532 low block

Media happy to blow hot air up the collective Villa jacksey but their away form is nothing special. It's just a case of whether we can create anything up front. If Jensen is fit then we have a chance and they have a European game this week. I'd stick to 4-3-3 with Roerslev at LB and Ghoddos in MF. Villa lost away to Forest, they're not all that.
