Ted Gaskell RIP

Former Bees Keeper Ted Gaskell has passed away at the age of 92. Ted had a long career with the Bees late 40`s early 50`s and was the oldest surving player. Ted passed away last Tuesday the day the Bees went Top Of The Table. RIP Ted

My condolences to his family and friends on this sad loss. It's a real end of an era as he was the last player still alive that signed for the club prior to the second world war.

He created a quirky record in that due to WW2 it took him twelve years to make his Football League debut, eventually ousting Joe Crozier in 1949.

I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Griffin Park centenary day in 2004 and he was bright as a button. He lived for a long time in Heston after his playing days were over and recently resided in Berkshire. You can read about his career in the excellent volume 2 of Dave Lane's Cult Bees and Legends book.

I too remember him as a good goalie, and yes you're right that is Ken Horne also in the picture. It's sad to lose another great Bee.

I was born many years after he hung up his gloves and when I hear the name Gaskell I think "Brentford legend". Must mean he was a legend.

I am Ted's youngest daughter, and on behalf of all my brothers and sisters I would like to thank you all for your lovely messages.

Ted's great loves were his family and his football, and to us he was, and always will be a legend. We are deeply touched that you thought so too.
He was a much loved Dad and will be very much missed by us all.

Sorry to hear this sad news - saw him on the pitch at the centenary day and just missed his playing days, but older members of my family often mentioned him.
