Ted Knutson

Interview with Ted Knutson (Kuh-NEWT-sun) , our Head of Player Analytics at a recent Opta conference. Did realise he was from over the pond.

Ted Knutson

It was all a bit nothingy really.

Why does he pronounce Knutson "ker, nutson"

Ted Knutson

Agree but first time any of us have heard/seen him so thought it worthy.

He was very informative on his subject with an exceptionally interesting and well-respected blog before he joined BFC, it's probably worth going back to find it, as he still posts but is a bit more circumspect now.

Ted Knutson

What does he do.

Waves his arms about a lot whilst talking...........:)

You wouldn't want him round for afternoon tea........ he'd have it all over the carpet.

Seems he's been on the GPG or is acutely aware of his idiosyncrasies.

I couldn't quite work out what his role is, but he obviously has no input in how to play football or win matches!!!, so why is he working for us?

I assume he is helping identify players to recruit and helping those currently here (and at FCM) analyse and improve their game.

WE seem to have more coaches analysts and non playing staff than we have actual players maybe we have the balance wrong you see all these people on the pitch when the players are warming up with there hands in there pockets doing nothing just taking a wage from mr benham.
At the end of the day it's the players that have to cross that white line and win us the 3 points just seems to me we have to many non playing staff on the pay role and going by and form it isn't working.

He is head of player analytics at Brentford and plays a key role in identifying new signings using advanced data analysis and modelling. Much of his previous work is available online via StatsBomb and makes very interesting reading. In a nutshell, no pun intended, I would imagine it works something like this - DS goes to DOF's and says, ' I need a new defensive midfielder to link up play, who is strong and likes to get on the ball'. It's Knutson and his team's job to unearth a list of potential players who fit the bill, based on their stats and using their models. Clearly anyone over a certain age and that would cost in excess of say 3 million would be disgarded immediately. Many, many other factors would also be considered, but any way you get the idea, eventually he would provide a list of potential targets which fit the bill and are realistic signings price wise. These would be watched by our own network of scouts both using clips and watching them live, where possible, and DS would see these clips and be given the scout's feedback and say, I like the look of him. Then the DOF's make approaches to the club/s concerned and hopefully seal the deals. Whilst this is ideally how we would like to operate, I would imagine that DS is also able to say I like Joe Bloggs at Wallsall and provided his stats look ok on Knutson's models, we would make an approach. Likewise our scouts might identify targets using traditional scouting methods, which would also be considered, provided the data looks good.

N.B this is my take on how things work behind the scenes

Ted Knutson

Just hope he isn't on our wage bill then

It's obviously not working very well on those two points!

Oh great. Someone else to ignorantly blame. Well done all.

Ted Knutson

If anyone listened to the interview he also said the problem is finding the right vocabulary so the players and coaches understand what they're talking about.

In terms of player personal improvement it seemed they only help those that take an interest in their services. Maybe it's some kind of opt in thing?
