only for the ice hockey and the speed skating here. Sablikova is a Czech hero, and this is basically THE big hockey tournament - they have world championships every year, but at the same time as the NHL, whereas the NHL shuts down for the winter olympics

The BBC News coverage is particularly poor; they really need to move on from their pre-London Olympics format of telling us how much each building cost and having a moan about "value", just proving they know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Next some moan about security, meanwhile, at the actual event, one of our skaters fell over.. and by the way... we did have a snowboarder or two qualify through to the finals but that's not really important, is it?

Men's Ice Hockey, Ski Jumping, Bobsleigh and Luge, Downhill skiing and my favourite - Ski Cross.
Don't care for any ice skating or slalom skiing however and curling is a bit naff!

After football & cricket, biathlon is my favourite sport. Ive heard across Europe the Mens Downhill pales into insignificance its all about Svendsen v Fourcade in the mens biathlon events. The womens is interesting as none of the 3 major players come from any of the big biathlon powerhouse countries. Its Darya Domracheva (who doubles up doing Eurovision!) v Kaisa Makarainen v Gabriela Soukalova (part time model, a feature of the season has been TV directors placing cameras to get a good shot of her behind!).

Sadly though already the BBCs coverage is shockingly awful. Had to turn off the commentary for opening ceremony as a Scottish high pitched screecher mispronounced names and obviously had no idea what she was talking about. Plus a lot of events arent even going to be on live on the extra feeds. Most of the biathlon will be shown on the extra channels in highlights form, absolutely gutted! Such a shame that Eurosport and quite possibly the best commentary team in sport of Mike Dixon & Patrick Winterton havent got the rights to the olympics this year. They would make such a better fist of it than the BBC's shambles.

I think its Just BBC2 in daytime. At the mo there doesnt appear to be any extra channels like the london olympics, otherwise the best place to watch the olympics is on YouTube

You could go into the final shoot a minute ahead of anyone else but not being able to control your heartbeat an a couple of shots going askew may mean you dont win a medal at all.

For beginners id recommend the Mass Start & Pursuit disciplines. Those 2 events make great TV.

I've really got into biathlon (watching) because my German mrs and her family are big fans so we watch any event that is broadcast. You are right it can be incredibly hard if they miss their final shot. It's so physically demanding they literally collapse once they cross the line.

Ive heard in Germany its as big as Premier League football is here. I really dont know how the biathletes do it. Skiing for miles, then stopping, rather than collapsing from exhaustion, stand still, lower your heartbeat and shoot at 5 targets the size of a tea saucer half a football pitch away, and do all that 2 or 4 times.

Im also looking forward to the gratuitous shots of Soukalova's backside!
