Does anyone miss the bad old days when we were angry and pissed off at the club for sh*tting on us and treating us like knobs?

I thought In these days of utopia of championship footy with not much to moan about (except where is Benny - WTF?) I would start a thread on when did the club really REALLY pissed u off - maybe the mods could set up a poll later on after we get a few recollections - I'll start...

1. Must be trying to merging us with QPHa Ha in 1967
2. Inviting Noades to bankrupt us
3. Knocking down the Royal Oak Stand for the poxy Wendy house
4. Not offering Deano a decent contract when we went up so he pissed off
5. selling DJ on the cusp of a promotion chance

I have sh*t loads more but I let's have a group bleed of pain lol

When forster was sold in January of the season we lost to Crewe at Wembley in the play offs(I think) was bad.

Then when W£bb tried to **** us over too not long after that.

Also anyone know why Dodgin was sacked? Someone went to great lengths to paint that question on the wall !

What about when we were on the brink of relegation in 98, and the club displayed the new home kit for the following season. Red and grey stripes!!! Proper bad scenes from the club and quite rightly booed out of town!

Think a couple of the youth team walked round it, looked in shock by the time they got to hate corner, think they just legged it to the tunnel thenlol

Regarding 5) it's been fairly well reported that we would have gone into administration if we hadn't sold DJ I believe

It may have been widely reported but I don't think there was any truth in it, with GP as the asset.

jimmy sirrell left just when Brentford were getting a decent team together. He went on to become a Notts County legend.
Dave Webb increasing his sell on bonus by dispatching Nicky Forster to Birmingham. I am convinced we would have gone up that season and we would not have suffered the ignominy of Crewe at Wembley

Got to be the demise of the Royal Oak terrace. Place has never been the same since.

I paid £15 to become a life member of the Centre Circle Club to help the club on one of the many occasions we were in deep dodo.A few years later Keith Loring committed mass murder and cancelled the arrangement! Trivial really but £15 was a lot of my money in those days.

Accepting a piss-poor offer for Andy McCulloch. Allowing Jim McNichol to just drift away from the club. Allowing a chancer like Webb to shaft us on and off the pitch.

Actually it was true. Club went out of their way to ensure Millen re-signed. I agree even if we offered a mega contract to Deano he still may have left. Believe it or not wasn't too fussed Deano left.

there was no bosman in those days.. Deano knew he was off to the Premiership..

I would've preferred to sell DJ than the ground. Whilst GP was the clubs main asset, I believe it was liquidity which was the issue at the time and not the value of the overall club. Selling DJ allowed us to solve our cashflow problems in the short term.

Although I too was gutted when we sold him.

Or if we had signed Stan Collymore and not Joe Allon then we would have also stayed up.

Don't get me wrong with Deano we would have stayed up but on his departure I just thought oh well rather being gutted. Not in my top 20 fav players for the Bees.

Then that poxy stand being built to replace it.
We were mugged off, the stand could have been bigger, no thought whatsoever.

Absolutely we'd have stayed up. Collymore kept Southend up virtually single handed that season. Well and truly destroyed us on that cold Sunday morning game.

IRRC the rumour was we chose not to sign him as Coppell tipped Holder off that the player was lazy

The memory may be playing tricks here but I don't remember a great deal of heat and light being generated at the time the Royal Oak went. A lot of the noisier supporters had already moved to the halfway line on NR.

That's because very few were attending games.
My memory works fine thanks.
I followed this one from pre demolishon to new build, I went to the game with that bulldozer in the middle of it, broke my heart.
There was no heat or anger because the deal was that we were getting a new modern stand, fit for purpose and had 2 tiers.
What we weren't told was that it would only hold 2,000 punters, have limited access / exits and no room for growth and would look non league.
We were later told that this saved the club, nobody can ever convince me that this saved the club, nearly killed us off, long term IMO.

We were told we would be financially in the black for at least 10 years. We were skint 12 months later!

Yep, and the horror of that cr@p stand resulted in many never returning to Griffin Park.
Thank the Lord that we've got a trustworthy owner with ambition !!

Just like knocking the towers down at wembley tearing down the royal oak was a right royal **** up..

"On it" matches in the 70s. If the kid that was on it had 10p, he could get out of the Royal Oak and in to the Braemar within seconds and was untouchable. Completely ruined the game. Spoilt it for me - haven't been since :shrug:.

I must admit, I hadn't considered that the unfairness of the 1970s 10p transfer charge between the Royal Oak and the Braemar might have had some sort of psychological effect that would one day put me in mind to emmigrate to the Isle of Wight. But perhaps this is indeed what happened? :shrug: I might try one of those 'no win no fee' companies. Could be that Matthew owes me compensation? :suspect:
