The Chomp story

The Chomp story

This first appeared in @NorthamptonBee 's book Silk Scarves and Chomp Bars IIRC

I was at the 6-1 game stood on the Ealing Road. I couldn't believe the amount of chomp bars I saw that day and couldn't believe that everyone had bought hundreds of them. It was only when reading the above that I learnt that cadbury donated 1000 to the cause in an extraordinary bit of good timing.

The Chomp story

Billy Grant was ejected for throwing one on the pitch late on that day.
I was standing with him and went full on at the policeman escorting him out, a really pathetic sight.
A gentle underarm throw amongst hundreds, my now wife was with me at his first game and I was told I was next if I didn't shut up and not to show myself up in front of her, silly barstewards.

The Chomp story

I think it was Southend away, cup game. We won 3-0 Leyland Daf (1991). We were tucked in the home stand, remember loads being chucked on to the pitch. Also my mate was chucked out throwing one in the Birmingham away tie. It was OK for them to chuck a corner flag into the away end though 🤬. Chomp, Chomp, Chomp……then launch!

The Chomp story

For me that LDV game at Southend was the maddest game for Chomps.
As fast as we were lobbing them onto the pitch, the stewards were throwing them back, I even think Richard Cadette was throwing them back to us.

The Chomp story

Family was the end guy's nickname, I know the other one but not by name.

Dan, Adam and Lulu....
Is it not Slatts then? Always assumed it was a (somehow) young looking him when that photo first emerged a few years ago

The Chomp story

Tranmere away in the play offs i remember we were behind the goal chucking them to the tranmere fans on our right and they were chucking them back and inbetween there was a space in the stand to keep fans separated and there were these two bewildered police men looking up at all these chocolate bars sailing over their heads from both directions

we lost 1-0 to a header at knee hight by Ged Brennan if I recall correctly

The Chomp story

Yep remember the Southend game. Steward searched me and ask if I was going to eat my Chomp bars. Well yes, duh. Let me in with them to Chomp away. Chomp Chomp Chomp.

The Chomp story

Shrewsbury away was another good one!!
Policeman as we're going into the ground: "I hear you boys have got a bit of a reputation for chucking chocolate bars around. Not got any with you today, have you??"
Me: "No idea what youre talking about officer."

We score...
CHOMP!! CHOMP!! CHOMP!! CHOMP!!
😆😆😆😆

The Chomp story

I wonder what would happen if this ‘craze’ started against Chelsea in a couple of weeks rather than in 1990. Probably be dawn raids and banning orders. I never knew about ‘the donation’. On New Road during the Bradford game there were bars flying all over the place.

The Chomp story

I think it is Slatts pre Wheelie Bin drama. That really aged him. I have also heard he no longer sadly goes.

The Chomp story

Rob?, Ian Foster, Dan Spriggs, Adam Carey, Bill Lambert

Slatts quit attending a season or so ago, "disgusted with commercialisation of the PL and nornalisation of betting sponsorship" (wasn't fussed about booze sponsors back in the day though😁)

Ian and Dan stopped some while back. Think both preferred life in the lower leagues but you'd need to ask them

Adam Carey still active - saw him on Saturday down by the river. Think Billy L still going.

We were such a tough watch back in the 90's you really had to create your own entertainment.

It was raining chomps that day.
Can remember one home game in particular was a tsunami of chomps from New Road, players on that wing were wading through them
