The Offside Rule...???

A mate of mine claims that the offside rule never used to be ''when the ball is played'' like it is today, but something else - ''when it's received'' i think he said... trying to get my head round this - think he's talking sh*t as usual but can someone confirm my suspisions...???

unless of course he's talking about nowadays when technically a person can be in an offside position but not be offside.

He's in an offside position if he's closer to the goal line then both the ball and the second last defender when the ball is played (the technical rule of offside)

BUT.. only offisde if
1 - he's interfering with the ball i.e. kicks/headers it
2 - he's interfering with an opponent
3 - seeking to gain an advantage by being in the offside position

Now, late flags are given when the lino thinks the player is interfering with the ball i.e. the player could be in an offisde position, runs back, sees the linos flag down, then turn and runs to the ball. There was a crazy situation where FIFA only wanted the lino to give it when the player actually contacts the ball which of course leads to a very late flag and lots of abuse. A bit more of a common sense approach is taken now but still leads to a late flag.

The third requirement involves phases of play. These are always subject to debate but easily explained. A person can be in an offside position, 50 yards offside and wait. Another person from an onside position then runs, gathers the ball, puts the original player in an onside position, then crosses and the original player scores. The second phase of play is when the ball is crossed - when the original player is now onside. Attackers like horse face know this rule, its application and do well out of it.

You're in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which you must have.
The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and is eyeing them with desire.
Both of you have forgotten your purses.
It would be rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes.
The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.
Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma. She prepares to throw her purse to you.
If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes.
At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and, whilst it is in flight you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes, always remembering that until the purse had actually been thrown it would be wrong to push in front of the other shopper.
