Yes, there are five tough qualifying tournaments for the Olympics for European boxers.
Remember that Audley Harrison had to compete at three such tournaments before he eventually qualified for Sydney 2000.

Furthermore, so many young talented fighters from the UK turn pro' at a young age.

I'm not sure how much the lottery money has helped sports in general but I've heard people say that it has helped the cyclists a lot. Track cycling starts at the weekend, I think.

The Olympic Games

The 3 Day Event team had a fairly bad day today, down to 3rd overall, and 5th and 8th individually.

Our defending champion shooter had a nightmare and didn't make the final.

A decent day in the Canoeing

The swimmers were also a bit better, though they would have struggled to be worse.

There is also a chance of a bronze in the judo I believe.

We also have one boxer at the Games. :)

OK ... I did not realise there were some pre Olympic qualifing rounds...

However .. I must admit that I am really enjoying the games and I was not that enthusiastic about it before last Friday.

The BBC coverage... especially the interactive feature has been really good...

Sharron Davies and Suzi Perry :sorted:

I also don't see the point in sending people who will not be able to compete for medals.

I think it was Baron de Coubertin who said something like "the great thing (in the Olympics) is not to win, the great thing is to take part"

What a great sporting event the Olympic games is.

My Ten Year son has been transfixed to this for the last 4 days. It has introduced him to many sports and really doesn't care how GB are doing. BTW he cried when England got knocked out of 2004.

It seems to me that some people are only interested in sport if it has a GB rep in it. Enjoy sport for what it is.

I couldn't care less about the 3 day event with or without a medal hope. Because I find it boring, but I have loved watching minority sports like badminton and am looking forward to the track cycling. With or with a Brit in it. Maybe if more people showed more interest in these minority sports then we wouldn't be so cr@p at them.

I know it was a film but Cool Runnings was based on a true story and that was about a Jamaican bobsleigh team. The morale of it was what the olympics is about.
I personally believe that you play sport to win but the Olympics is different and it is about representing your country !! remember Eddie the Eagle.
Not all countries have great facilities to represent say Ethiopia is a great honor !

Parry got Bronze in the 200m butterfly. Huzzah.

The Olympic Games

when does the olympics start?

I agree in principle and would never want to limit the competitors for any events.

But boxing is slightly different IMHO. People can get hurt and it is only right that nations don't send boxers who could get hurt.

In Britains circumstance we only have one good enough, for whatever reason, and that is a shame.

Completely agree.

However you may have picked a different example. Ethopia will dominate the distance running events, winning most if not all.

The Olympic Games

Good swim for Parry yesterday, looked for a while as if he could have even come back at Phelps.

Nearly got another medal in the 4x200 freestyle, hopefully we can now pick up a few more medals in the pool.

The Olympic Games

We'd need a very good performance, but we're still 4th overall so it's not a big jump.

It would be a big disappointment if we didn't get a medal at all in the eventing.

The Olympic Games

A good medal in the Kayaking, although it was close.

A few more possibilities today. Our male judo player is in the last 4, having beaten one of the favourites.

We also have an archer in the last 4.

Plus we qualified fast for the swimming relay tonight.

Suprise Suprise we're at the bottom of the table on deux points

 What table is that then?

We haven't had a great games so far but we aren't bottom of any table that I've seen.

Robertson and Emms are in the final of the mixed doubles badminton and guaranteed at least a silver. :)

You must have just been waiting to post that ;)

Final is 2.50 tomorrow.

They played exceptionally today, and could take it.

We are in last position with only 2 medals

The Olympic Games

A very good day today, trebling the medals count, with more to come.

The eventing came good in the end, and I'm not sure we've heard the last of that probem for the German woman.

The Archery medal was a pleasant surprise, making up for the judo and swimming not producing their share as of yet.

Hopefully our swimmers can pick up another tomorrow in the backstroke, to add to the badminton medal.

Anyone else watching us getting tanked in the badminton?

I've just gone back to my desk. I think it is down to the gods frowning on our man's fashion sense and exacting retribution - a headband and a goatee is a really bad idea :nono:

Apparently we've just won our first gold though in the yachting, not sure what class it was in, probably the pedalo rofl
