The Toss
You can be forgiven for not giving one about such a usually trivial matter. But yesterday, in my mind at least, there seemed to be two, potentially conflicting, factors riding on the toss of the coin
1. The sun was cracking the flags in an early autumn sky. We knew from last week that it would be low enough in the second half to cause significant issues for the side defending the East Stand. Win or lose the toss, we hoped to be able to attack this end after half time.
2. We now have a plan in place, apparently to take the kick off, flood the opposition half and batter them into conceding within the first minute of each game.
I cannot remember for the life of me if we kicked off yesterday, but the fact that we didn’t score for over a minute of the match makes me wonder if we weren’t held up by having to regain possession from a Wolves kick-off. If this is true, we probably ended up with the best outcome in being allowed to switch ends. Or, did we win the toss and opt to choose which end to start at? Does anyone know? The evidence of many Wolves fans having to shield their eyes to see the action in the second half suggests that we got this right either way.
Am I overplaying this? Has the toss of a coin at a Brentford match become as significant as a coin toss at a cricket match? Or is this a bit of short-lived phenomenon until other sides adjust to us and we move on to the next stroke of imaginative genius (or until the sun disappears behind the clouds for the British winter)?
