Given how embarrassingly bad Denmark were in the World Cup, I am guessing they will replace the head coach. Hopefully not with a young Danish coach overachieving in the best league in the world…
This was my immediate thought after watching how appalling they were in that game.

He’s not going to leave the premier league to rebuild an ageing Denmark team.

for a start they can’t afford him!

Thomas Frank

Maybe Emiliano will get to play for Thomas again and I don't mean the Muff job.

Genuine question - at what aged does a coach stop being described as 'young'? TF is knocking on the door of 50.

Are there better attacking players that could’ve been playing to provide more of a goal threat for Denmark? Was it a question of selection, coaching or just that there’s not a sufficient pool of quality players? I guess we’ll need our Danish contributors to comment.

Far too nuanced for football fans. They finished bottom, he’s toast

Really ? I would have thought that was exactly the type of challenge he would relish myself. As for salary I’ve no idea what the National Team coach earns compared to what he’s on now.

These knockout tournaments are savage. Chuck the 32 teams in this World Cup in to a 31-game league and I dare say Denmark would finish top half but two average performances and they're now packing their bags to go home. It might be coaching or the quality of players but could also just be nothing more than a 'bad week'?

It looked like a bad day at the office with almost every player a yard slower than Australia after the break and with so many dreadful first touches from elite, International footballers.
They are unlikely to be as collectively bad again with Eriksen, Hojdonk ordinary at best with our players anonymous and the big lump at Palace Andersen looking like a lower league stopper with a triangular head.
Unsure Thomas would want the job at this time

I think a lack of talent up front is an issue. They were debating this briefly on the Guardian football weekly podcast after the second game and they mentioned that if say Haaland had been Danish, or even just someone better than Brathwaite, what a world of difference that would have made to this squad - a listener joked that Denmark must be be regretting letting Norway leave their union in 1814.

That being said, not sure what a new manager can do about it, you have to work with the players available in the national team.

Will be interested to see if there are any credible rumours about TF, if there is a vacancy.
The weird way football is now you probably get more clicks about who the new Villa / Leeds manager might be.... than a country of 6 million people.
People have speculated that is a job that might turn his head one day.

Thomas Frank

If Denmark can find a way to get Ivan a passport maybe we start to worry. But their lack of a competent striker probably ultimately did for them. No point in having CE and Jensen being able to ping balls in when the targets are donkeys like Cornelius and Braithwaite.

Based on some desktop research, it seems TF earns just over a million a year, which is ballpark what the Danish coach earns. So I suspect they may be able to afford him (albeit the cost to buy out his current contract may tip the balance the other way).

Pure speculation anyway. I would tend to agree that he probably wouldn't leave us at this point unless it was to a much bigger PL or European club side

Also, that Denmark salary is the upper limit. Where TF could earn 2,3 or 4 times that at a top PL or European club.

He’ll manage Denmark one day, but not until he’s set for life and is looking to wind down the stress

Bees squad is stronger than Denmark's. And another thing, Erickson's played for three teams this year and Brentford is where he's shone the most.

Thomas is only a year younger than Hjulmand!

Thomas Frank

If the current manager leaves, he's going to be bang on favourite and rightly so.

I suspect it would be a case of 'would he go' and not 'would it be offered'

Wait and see
Don't disagree but can't see it myself. It's all about timing which I don't think hits the spot atm. Come back in 7 or 8 years....

First of all the strikers of the Danish team has been injured or out of form this season.
The lack of goals from them have put the pressure on the midfield players. They have actually been playing quite well up till the World Cup. They haven't performed impressively in Qatar and I really don't know why. Tonight It would easy to assume a lot of things, but the players in question are all playing regularly in top teams, so you'll have to look elsewhere for a reason.
Buttom line is. If you are not able to put a win together against Tunisia and Australia you have nothing to do at the World cup.

We'l be back. We are still in Group A in the Nations League, so there will be something to fight for there.

Do you have a view on TF being approached for the job, or do you stay with your current manager or look elsewhere?

Hjulmand will not be sacked. But he might quit the job, there are rumors in the press about that, but such a bad performance will always be followed by alot of rumors.

Noone has speculated on a replacement yet, but ofcourse TF will be a contender.

Thomas Frank

It will surprise me a lot if Hjulmand stops. Apart from the World Cup he has done a terrific job.

I think he still has unsolved business. Denmark has a lot of talented young players, and he's very good at developing new talented players into the squad. Don't forget he was at the coaching staff at FC Nordsjælland for 9 years, where development of talent is written with capital letters.

His contract expires in 2024.

Thomas Frank

Thomas indicated tonight that what he has at Brentford is really special. It would be difficult to find another job that matches what he has at BFC. Maybe after we have won the Champions League.

Thomas Frank

With respect, the fact that I'm newer gives me a little a different way of looking at things, and perhaps that's useful. As I said, this isn't me saying Frank is the worst. In fact, he's part of why I became a supporter. This is me identifying areas where I hope he improves.

1) I am very much aware of why we use the planned subs. In fact, if you look back on GPG I discussed this extensively at the start of the season and was super excited about it. Thomas has used subs much more aggressively than our opponents and it's served us well. Plus it's a very valuable recruitment tool by showing players we want to come to the team that they will get playing time.

The problem, as I outlined, is that we now have 5-6 players in that rotation injured, so in order to keep that same strategy going he has had to use players that aren't as capable (Ghoddos). When you don't have the personelle for your system you have to adapt.

In fact, I think if I have one overall theme of my post is that Frank has not adapted very well to player injuries this season.

Another example: Norgaard is such a special player (as many have noted) you can't try to replace his role with a like-for-like as we have done for weeks now. He should have been considering another body in midfield.

Now I'm not a football expert (as you noted) so maybe my solution of an extra body in the midfield won't work for some reason. That's fair. But trying to replace Norgaard with Janelt or FTT without any other major adjustments seems like it was always doomed to failure.

2) You make a fair point here, and I didn't phrase my point very well. I think my issue is that all the flexibility he is demanding, the backup players haven't shown they are capable of doing it. So two things can be true at the same time: a) Yes Frank's moves for more felxibility at the season were vital and important but b) it's not working now because of personnel issues. Time to adapt.

3) We can agree to disagree on this one, but a reporter has looked into the point I made, so I feel like me making a similar point isn't reflective of my significant ignorance as a new fan.

4) We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one too. I'm fully aware of Josh's injury and how close to career ending it was. He's a great guy who is beloved by the fans. Unfortunately, I think that's causing folks like yourself and Thomas to be too patient. My support for this argument? To my eye, his poor play has had less to do with fitness or capability than decision making. The number of times he's killed possessions with unwise launched shots or crazy long balls is very frustrating, and no one has explained to me what that has to do with his injury.
JDS speculative shot against Manure was very worthwhile.

Can’t see Thomas wanting to go for the National job at this stage in his career. However if he did we could just do a straight swap… sorted!!

Can't see money being his main motivation.

Thomas Frank

Schmeical Snr was on R5 this morning, assessing Denmark.
H. won’t go unless the Danish FA want him to. He won’t want to leave the job unfinished, particularly after one bad tournament. Yes, there will be discussion, maybe some pressure, but Danes are realistic. H. still has a lot of credit with the Danish FA after Finland/Eriksen last year.
Now, PS might just’ve been spouting off, but I got the impression he’s got some sources for his comments.

According to Bees United interview, we've changed the way we defend set pieces. Will be interesting to see if this improves in the second half of the season.. Will make a huge difference if we can cut out soft goals from corners/free kicks.

What do you think our net return is for goals conceded v those scored, from set pieces......??......

Why not salary being a major factor?

When i was 30 I went from a job I loved (and was doing well at...) but with crap pay to a far better paid job at a more prestigious 'name' company.

Within a month I realised my mistake.

But money talks...

As long as we can cut out those conceded from our own corners.......

Thomas Frank

I thought we were renegotiating his contract? Be good from Thomas's perspective if there are one or two stalking horses to improve his negotiating strength. I'd want him to be happy with his conditions and continue developing the team.

Thomas Frank

Anyone got any thoughts on maybe Anderlecht went for Thomas, hoping he would go, taking Brian with him, but he declined, so they went for Brian on his own.
Zero thoughts because a) these days (and no disrespect to them) a move to Anderlecht is a step down from Brentford; it is highly unlikely therefore they’d even think about approaching Thomas b) it’s currently a bit of a mess there anyway and c) why am I even bothering answering this question, I can’t believe this even crossed your mind… :)

Of far more interest would seem to be that Thomas feels that he/we have so much more to achieve. I wonder what he thinks that is?

My thoughts on Thomas going into 2023.

I think the new haircut is ill-advised. Looked much better long at the back.
