Very interesting pre-match interview on Sky when asked about challenging for Europe that TF made reference to Villa spending loads in the Jan transfer window and we could only bring in someone on loan. Just shows what we are up against when competing in this league.

competing in this league is our realistic ambition - and prize.

Nice interview in the Times today with Kasper Hjulmand former Denmark coach, who praises Thomas for his ability to fall in love with young player’s and then help them become better. ??

Thanks. relevant bits for anyone who wants to beat the paywall

While Iraola would be the leading candidate for a Spurs vacancy this summer, he is not the only potential option. Fulham’s Marco Silva and Brentford’s Thomas Frank are under consideration. Both have taken their teams into the Premier League and established them there in recent years. Fulham are eighth, 11 points ahead of Spurs, and in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Brentford are 11th, seven points ahead of Postecoglou’s side.

Silva is the second likeliest for the role behind Iraola. The 47-year-old was highly rated during Tottenham’s 2023 managerial search, reaching the final three, only for the job to go to Postecoglou instead.....[then some discussion about Silva]

Frank held talks with Aston Villa about becoming their head coach in October 2022 when Tottenham’s technical director Johan Lange was Villa’s sporting director but they ultimately opted for Unai Emery. The Dane has won many admirers for helping Brentford punch above their weight since promotion to the top flight in 2021, despite having one of the lowest budgets in the division.
And under "analysis" of each candidate
Frank, meanwhile, became an assistant at Brentford in December 2016 and he replaced Dean Smith as head coach two years later. Brentford were one of the most attractive and exciting teams to watch in the Championship on their way to winning the 2021 play-off final.
He adapted his style for their first two seasons in the Premier League and put an extra focus on defensive solidity. They switched shape from 4-3-3 to 3-5-2 and played direct with then-goalkeeper David Raya often launching passes towards Ivan Toney. Frank has evolved the side since and they now primarily play out from the back.
At the beginning of his career, Frank coached Denmark’s youth-teams and he has a track record of developing players and harnessing their potential including Toney, Bryan Mbeumo, Ollie Watkins and Mikkel Damsgaard.
He has a long history with Lange due to their shared Danish background. Since Lange joined in November 2023, Tottenham have focused on signing young players under the age of 23. Frank’s skillset would perfectly complement this young core.

Does this mean I need to hope Spurs win the Europa League.....??......?

I guess Frank is at a point where while he's not nessesarily the sexiest pick around for journalists, he's one that they can't not claim to be a contestant in any theoretical future manager-races among the bigger clubs

Thomas Frank

He will go eventually, just have to keep hoping these so called big clubs keep overlooking him !

Thomas Frank

I note that one of the other names linked with the Leipzig job is Cesc Fabregas which is interesting because if Thomas did ever leave (eg he got that job) , I think Fabregas would be high on our list of possible replacements.

if he decided to become a journalist or punter he would knock most of them for six. (bad analogy I know...)

With both Spurs and Chelsea strongly rumoured to be parting ways with their managers in the Summer, I think we have a real risk of losing Thomas who will at least treble his salary

I know he is happy here but there must come a time when he thinks it time for something new

I can’t imagine Thomas wanting a position in another Premier League club. He’s more likely to make a career change in another country in my opinion.

Apart from PSG, Madrid and Barcelona, All the big teams are in the PL.

The salary for staying 10 more years at Brentford will be much better than what you get in the 1-2 years(best case) these clubs will let you stay until they get rid of you for no reason

Graham Potter had a great job at Brighton, went to treble his salary and he ended up being jobless very soon and for a while
Hopefully Thomas will be more clever
If he leaves at least to go to a club will clever people

Thomas has worked with MB for long enough to learn life is not all about money - its how you enjoy what you have and he will realise he is unlikely to get the same satisfaction anywhere else

He also just may want change, new players, new targets, bigger transfer kitty virtually guaranteed European football

Cant say the same about the hype he had and his reputation
These clubs could make even Pep look average lol
Amorim in a few months may have the same fate with Ten Hag

TF is a highly driven, motivated and ambitious individual. He must be in order to succeed in such a ferociously competitive and ruthless elite environment as the Premier League. He isn't a lifelong Brentford supporter living the dream at his own club. However much affection he may have developed for us, Brentford is simply a convenient vehicle for him to develop his career. If he is offered a position at a club that gives him a genuine opportunity to regularly challenge for silverware he will have the self confidence to believe he can make a success of it. and will almost certainly be off. We can't begrudge him that when the time comes - and it will, soon.

Not as straightforward as that. He is smart enough to know the limits of his talent and that to succeed he needs a structure around him that works. Few clubs will offer that. Spurs and Chelsea for example are far bigger clubs but would he work under Levy or worse Boehly who (allegedly) wants input into team selection? I don’t think so.

This is the crux of the matter to me though. Which I've mentioned on a number of occasions.
I honestly think that TF believes so much in his own ability (talent?). And that the only way he can prove this, to himself as much as anyone else, is to be able to compete on a level playing field with the likes of Pep, Slot, Howe, Potter, Amorim etc. And he'll never get that chance by staying with us.....

I think it’s got very little to do with working with MB (who has himself rather heavily focused his adult life on making a huge amount of money doing things he’s very good at and finds interesting). TF clearly cares about lots of things besides money. But it doesn’t mean he’s uninterested in money. It’s bizarre to think that the Brentford job is unique in the satisfaction it might give.

The procession of top managers going to Man U are unlikely to have gone there just for the cash. The opportunity to take one of the biggest names in football back to the heights it once occupied will have been a much bigger motivator. Same with Potter going to Chelsea as a chance to test himself at a higher level.

I don’t think TF is touting himself around for a pay rise but it will be something that comes with the sorts of football jobs that will be interesting. He also has the luxury of having earned enough to go and do something else for less if he fancies it. Much as there’ll have been a bunch of MB’s contemporaries in banking who when they were being managed out took their pay offs to buy a house and then retrained to become teachers. In terms of pure challenge maybe managing Accrington would be a step up but I don’t see that as TF’s next move.

Let’s just enjoy having him while we do rather than place him on some pedestal as an ascetic altruist.

I expect that Thomas working as a pundit on the BBC for last years Euro’s may have been to help raise his profile to other clubs including their supporters. He always comes across as articulate and quite charismatic (more so than someone like Graham Potter). Thomas could easily fit into a Top 6/8 team and has the level of gravitas required.

If he does not get a top PL job this summer, I could see him go to Germany to maybe work with Klopp at RB Leipzig or to replace Alonso at Bayer if he moves on.

I wondered who'd be the first to raise this perennial and yawn-making non-factual rumour.

He knows exactly what he needs and it's most certainly not Romero at the back, nor Richarlison in attack

I would imagine our next manager/coach will already
be at the club now.
But if this situation goes on and on, then he may have flown the nest by the time the position becomes vacant. Unless an agreement is already in place.

I think if Levy is ever dislodged as supremo at Spurs (he only owns a small percentage of the club) then a new project there could appeal to Thomas. Can't see Chelsea going down the "Potter" route again any time soon. Thomas might also get fed up if the injury curse strikes again next season and mid table becomes our fall back target.

Levy is in place because tax exile majority shareholder Joe Lewis wants him there. What Levy owns is irrelevant

IIRC - the only clube that has a manager on treble Thomas's salary if Citeh. If what was written here once upon a time is true (!) Pep is on £15m, Thomas £5m. The other big clubs more like £7-10m
