Do you think Matthew Cox ready to be our Backup GK next season or should we loan him out?

Thomas Strakosha

Anything more than £1.5million we should be quids in (assuming £30k per week)

Good business

I'd be happy with someone taking him on a loan and covering a % of his wages tbh.
I think we will struggle to get anyone to pay a fee (or even take him on a free) AND match his current pay packet.

If he’s fit he’s got a strong enough CV to be worth fairly serious money even as a cup keeper for a team qualified for Europe.

Let's see. I can certainly see a loan happening.

I stand to be corrected but as far as I am aware Matthew Cox has never played a league game for anyone. How on Earth can he be ready!
Are you suggesting that no player has ever been ready to make their debut before?

Have some faith in our squad.

For comparison Joe Whitworth is 19, and recently made his debut in goal for Crystal Palace vs Brighton. It was his first senior game. He played very well.

He is almost exactly the same age as Cox and even spent time at the same academy (Wimbledon). He is behind Cox in the England age group pecking order though.

It will be great for Cox’s development to go out and get a full season on loan somewhere next season if possible but there is a reason he’s been given a massive contract and been trusted in the first team squad so much over the last 2 seasons. If he is No. 2 next year as well I’ll be extremely relaxed about that.

I do not know the details of Whitford however I expect he was an emergency selection. Should Raya have been injured then no doubt Cox would have made his debut this season. That does not mean he would be ready. He has a long contract, Balcombe had a very long contract, he was involved in the England set up. I am not rubbishing Cox far from it he appears to be a quality product but he is definitely not “ready” for Premier League football. Currently we are in an ideal world and he must by now be coached to death and must go out on loan next season. His development will be impaired if he becomes our number two.

It’s completely down to how good Cox is and only the club knows that really. Donnarumma made his Milan debut at 16 and after a couple of cup games got promoted from third keeper to a Serie A start, held his place and became a full international at 17, then the rest is history!

The games in the USA could be a good way to Cox to get some useful experience

Casillas made his debut for Real at 19 having only played for their reserve teams.

Thomas Strakosha

Didn't make the bench today.

Is he injured (again)?

Hope a transfer out is imminent? If he is injured again, he needs to go anyway. Just doesn't fit.
Jay Harris tweeted that he had a minor knock.

Thomas Strakosha

When I played in goal I probably got 10 minor knocks per game.
