Three Games

Good job we had that board meeting then..

After 6 defeats in 7 I hope there was a board meeting to try to find out what was going wrong and what come be done about it. Pretty irresponsible management to just ignore it don't you think?

Three Games

Still don't really have a clue where we will end up. All I can say is that it looks like everybody can beat everybody else on their day and that most teams are totally inconsistent.

We seem a bit more compact and resilient and confidence must be growing but we are still totally lacking in depth.

Time will tell.....

Three Games

we are still totally lacking in depth.

In certain positions we are.

But Saturday's squad was without Ide, Mousinho, Smith and Osborne, the first two would get in many Bees fans' starting line-ups, Smith appears to have the ability, if perhaps not the attitude, and Osborne did a decent job for a while earlier in the season.

The spine of our team, Brown, Heywood/Mackie, O'Connor/Mousinho/Moore/Pead, Thorpe stands up well with most in the division IMHO but if we lose too many of them we will struggle.

14 games in it seems to me we won't be in the top three and won't be in the bottom five, despite the negativity from certain people, where we finish in between depends on how many games we can keep that spine together for and how well we use the loan market after January.

Three Games

If we could score more goals we'd be right up there.

Three Games

but we are still totally lacking in depth.

Apart from one or two teams most have little depth outside their 1st 13 or 14 players. Which is why the loan system is used so much in the lower leagues.

Three Games

The reason we won't score that many goals is that against Lincoln, who were fodder from the depths of the league, we sadly played 4 defenders with two more defenders in midfield. Defenders rock backwards when the ball is coming their way whereas most good midfielders go forward and attack the ball. Andrews and his mate found our midfield a bit of a joke and they haven't been alone this season, we surely have to be a tad more adventurous in our line ups against most teams in this poor league.

:imwith: It's no coincidence whatsoever that Moore's come back into contention in the last couple of games and we've managed to win both of them... Of the players we've got in our squad he's surely got to be one of the first on the team sheet, along with Heywood!

Anyone can beat anyone in this division. That was the case in 98/99 and it is still the case now. Most teams have a home advantage and, thus, a better record at home. I believe that our record is better away because of the negativity from sections of our home crowds this season. Let's start backing Butcher and the team and see how our home record can improve.

I think our record at home has more to do with Butcher's negativity than the fans'.....

another must win game tomorrow night.

I wouldn't say it's a must win. I wouldn't be too down about a draw in fairness but I think it's more now an expected win. Hopefully so :)

Macclesfield have lost fewer games this season than us.

Anyone "expecting" a win might want to re-assess.

Losing would be a bad result, obviously, a draw wouldn't IMHO.

:D :sorted:
Probably a draw tonight, we have a few injuries, some of our better players recently such as Mous (possibly), Poole (vastly improved) and Thorpe (consistently inconsistent) so I think a draw is a likely outcome unless they score first in which case Ide will turn into Harry Enfield's Kevin.

We haven't missed Mous the last few games, so today shouldn't be any different on that front.. Thorpe would be a massive loss though..

The problem we have had earlier in the season were that we played a holding midfield player (O'Connor or Pettigrew) and the players in front of them centrally were Moore & Mousinho, with Ide playing a lone striker role, later followed by Thorpe. With the likes of Brooker, Shakes, Connell, Ide out wide.
We were overrun in midfield and although Moore covers ground, he is lightweight and imho not yet strong enough for a central midfield role in a 2, as he has 2 stronger players around him is used more in a free role.
We also played plenty of tidy passing shortballs around the centre circle that often broke down and they were played often by Moore, Connell & Poole.
Our improvement in results has resulted in us playing slightly higher tempo, the defenders higher up the pitch and more balls to Moore, Connell & Thorpe through channels. Moore receiving the ball in the atatcking half will result in more danger than him receiving the ball in the defensive half, which he often did. Although we still are not scoring bundles, we are creating more chances and I'm sure that more goals will come, from the current system being played.

Three Games

Pettigrew was our holding midfielder with KOC holding midfield in front of him and thus creating a void in the middle.
At Wycombe it backfired as Pettigrew had acres of space and time on the ball but had no idea what to with it when we were controlling that first half.

Mous will improve our midfiled upon his return as he holds, tackles and runs with the ball, now if he could learnt to pass we could have a very good player on our hands.

For how many matches did they play in the same central midfield?
O'onnor has played in various positions thisseason because of inuries & suspension to others. Not sure he played more than 2 games with Pettigrew in midfield though. A void was caused in the main becuase the defense were too deep, the holding midfield player picks teh ball up from them and has acres in front of him. This led to Moore in particular dropping deeper to get the ball and with little or no movement and very little width, it was either played sideways or long.
I agree that Mousinho has improved and actually makes some decent runs forward, but as you say he still needs to improve his passing. Pead makes shorter runs, but does make himself available and is better passer than Mousinho and covers Starosta more, as he gets forward more often.

They've also won less than us  i'd take a draw now

I think we have to assume that our defence will play fairly deep with the current line up. With Heywood and Mackie as CBs, it would be suicidal to play a high line and leave space behind. Against Lincoln, the 'diamond' formation in midfield worked reasonably well, and I assume we played the same against Bradford (with Connell taking over from Ide as 2nd striker, and Moore replacing Connell as attacking midfielder) - might leave us vulnerable on the flanks, but with many teams just hoofing it up the middle, that might be the least bad option.

I think we have played slightly higher up the field since Heywood has played. :fishing:
Although I agree it can be suicidal to play too high up, but space needed to be cut down on between midfield and forwards and a higher defence has allowed that.
Pead & Poole can drop wide when required if we look vulnerable there.

Isn't one of the golden rules of football don't change a winning team?

Three Games

Merked by Gary Blissett. I'd be gutted if that happened to me. :D

.

Losing would be a bad result,

Not must win but certainly should win.

Considering our so called "promotional budget" last night was a must win. After 15 games we are 13th and i think we can safely say we will not be going up this year and i think losing to both Dagenham and Macclesfield proves this.

Three Games

Want is a bit different to have to ;)

Nice one beeeehive..;) ;) I personally hate to change a winning team...But...In certain circumstances one may have to as trainer..Example..
Your Captain has missed the last couple of games thru injury, a young boy or less experienced player has taken his place. We play Fulham on Sunday...Do you start with your captain or the young or less experienced:idea: As i said its only 1 example...

Whilst I'm not disagreeing, plenty of teams have been in a far worse position at this stage and gone up.
The performance last night showed the lack of consistancy that is holding us back, Saturday showed we have the quality to compete with many teams

I'd go along with that. The frustration to me is that there are some decent footballers in this side but we are constantly under-performing. Some may blame the manager but the main reason for that I believe is because we don't have enough goals in the team which means that every game is tight and thus the team plays with a degree of fear. If we were confident that we could put some of the lesser teams to the sword (such as Lincoln) I think our players would express themselves more and the likes of Connell and Moore could strut their stuff.

Frankly, it's farcical that we haven't addressed the goalscoring problem. I have no idea why we haven't got someone in on loan but surely everybody at the club (not just the manager) should see this as a priority.

Three Games

We had a young kid on the bench last night who should have been thrown on. We had settled for 0-0 in the stands but when change was needed we threw Heywood upfront and shut our eyes. Like Les says, we are desperate for someone or someones upfront.

...................when I saw that we had signed Dickson on a loan deal, I thought that we had cracked that particular nut.......then I realised that it wasn't the right Dickson..................

Same here. I thought was Chris Dickson who had signed, but he's with those Kent Pikeys from Gillingham.
