Ticket for Brighton

Right, a bit of a weird one here. My son is at Bristol Uni and my wife is in Bristol this weekend on her old Uni reunion so my daughter is coming to the game with me as we are home alone. She is really excited for her first Brentford game as a few of her friends go and she hears all about it.

My son was supposed to have his girlfriend visit this weekend but she is now having to go home for personal reasons. My son is still feeling a bit homesick and lonely after the first week so said he is coming home for the Brighton game. I have told him he has to stay but I feel a bit guilty as he said he hasn't made any friends yet as they are all weird and nobody likes football, obviously he hasn't met everyone in Bristol yet only the ones on his course or in his flat.

So if anybody has a spare ticket for Friday it would help me out I could take both of them, if not, well, I think some tough love on the boy might be coming.

You have my sympathy as I have two daughters who regularly want to go but only 1 extra ST between them. Eldest one has been going for many years now but the youngest is a more recent convert.
When both want to go (eg. this Friday), I usually am able to get a ticket near us on the exchange or rely on the friendly assistance of GPGers.
The only problem of course is no TAP’s are gained and so the problem persists.
I’m sure you’ll find a way for both to be there.

Can’t help with Brighton but really sorry to hear your son’s not settling well at uni. Has he got any hobbies or sports he likes playing which he could join a uni society to help meet folks with something in common? Doesn’t have to be anything even slightly cool- even the Doctor Who society if he’s really into that!

If it helps at the end of the month I have a Wolves ticket spare.

I was at Bristol 8 years ago and played football - tell him to get himself to the football trials and he will meet plenty of like-minded people! I even made a few friends who supported Brentford

If you’re not sorted, drop me a DM and I can get you one for him on the exchange. There’s a few tickets on there at the moment.

I've got a mate who isn't going to the Brighton game in the West Stand if you haven't got one I can see if I can get his for use.

He'll settle, it's a massive change moving away etc Bristol is a big City with plenty of people he'll be okay once he finds his "group"

Tell him to get in the SU on a weekend, especially if there is footie on the TV, as he'll get pulled into a group who are watching as well.

First few weeks are the hardest, everyone is sussing each other out, but the more he stays around the more he'll interact with people and eventually find those like minded!

Alternatively, he can shout "you Reds" from his bedroom window, on the hour, every hour, in the hope of a passing Bee ?

I won't turn this into another Uni thread for my son but as you have kindly mentioned it. I really don't think things are that bad for him, the challenge is he is Uni of Bath but based in Bristol so a lot of extra curriculum stuff isn't available to him. My wife calls him and texts him 50 times a day "are you ok, have you made friends, are you eating enough poppet " etc. so he replies, its boring, everyone is weird, I have to get out of bed in the morning so she is all flustered that the poor little whippet is not enjoying it.

She was tracking his phone until I put a stop to it, she could see he hadn't left his digs last Thursday and bombarded him with calls and texts, where are you what's wrong. She is having literal panic attacks and anxiety and thinking he is crying in his room with a teddy bear. I got hold of him and said why can't you bloody answer her messages, she will harass you 24/7 until you say, I am fine, I am having great time, please leave me alone. he said he didn't answer because he stayed in bed as he had a cold (yeah, right) adn he didn't want a b***ocking from her so ignored it.

He has made a few friends, but the 20 odd people on his course are spread all over the place and nowhere near his digs and he thinks they are strange anyway. It will just take him some time to make friends and settle in, he is a very affable boy and makes friends easily just like his dad but he is a bit isolated at the moment and with his mum acting like a old hen he thinks it will be a touch to come home every weekend, see his girlfriend and drop his pants on my bathroom floor again.

Something so simple and daft like watching football in the student union (as mentioned above) and also putting yourself forward to play football (as mentioned above) will be a great step forward! Common ground and all that, few beers relaxes people and the old “who do you support” will help!
