Tim Henman....

Tim Henman....

All those SPOTY low-odds bets on Lewis Hamilton are safe!

Tim Henman....

Fine effort to get back from two sets down but couldn't deal with the power of Lopez at the key stages.

I hope it's not the last we see of Henman as he has basically been British tennis for 10-12 years apart from a couple of years when Rusedski was at his best.
He deserves to go out near the top rather than drift around at the lower levels, as he is in danger of doing as his ranking drops.

If he doesn't make progress at the US Open and Australian Open next year's Wimbledon, where he will get a wild card for as long as he wants one, might be his last.

Tim Henman....

Looked like he ran out of gas in the fifth after a five setter on Tuesday followed by fourteen cliff-hanger games yesterday and another five-setter today. Henman should have won before the fifth set but once it got to that he had no fire-power or leg-strength.

Tim Henman....

Has announced his retirement  such a loss for English tennis

Tim Henman....

possibly the most successful English Tennis player ever, in terms of career earnings....

Probably one of the most successful Englishmen in any sport - certainly in the last 25 years.

Tim Henman....

To be fair to Tim, he would have won a lot more tournaments, if he'd have ducked some of the bigger prizes...like the Grand Slam Tournaments....

and gone for smaller competitions...less prize money, less crowds but more titles...He went for the big boys and as a reward stayed in the top ten for a number of years.....sadly, he will be viewed as a loser, as he never managed to consistently beat the top 5/6 players above him at his peak.

"loser" is a bit too strong. "nearly-man" is how I'd describe him

Tim Henman....

I thought I heard them say on Radio 5 that apart from Fred Perry he was the next successful tennis player we have ever had.

Tim Henman....

Jesus, what a cack nation for sport we must be.He ain't Scottish lol

I can't think of many individual sportsmen (or women) who stayed in the top 10 for a decade. Paula Ratcliffe perhaps, Jonathon Edwards, Steve Redgrave. No footballers to add to the list, probably one or two RU players and maybe a cricketer or two but it's easier in a team sport.

Tim Henman....

Watched him play at the US Open on a few occasions, never winning of course. End of an era though and it will be sad to see him go. :(

Depends what your definition of success and how big your list is.

I'm a big fan of Henamn and believe he never got the respect he deserved from a football-obsessed tabloid press and those who read them. He was the best player Britain produced for more than 50 years and was unfortunate in that his career overlapped two of the best five players to ever pick up a racket in Sampras and Federer, many would say the best two. But I think you're exagerating a little.

Redgrave
Pinsent
Ainslie
Faldo
Christie
Edwards
Radcliffe
Mansell
Boardman
Wiggins
Gunnell

A list of those who have achieved more than Henman, and that's just off the top of my head. If you start going into Taylor, O'Sullivan, Nudd his record, as good as it is, comes into context.

Tim Henman....

......the Eddie the Eagle of tennis....................absolute joke.............

He consistenly got to semi and quarter final of wimbledon. When you consider that before him we had to put up with all the fat union jack wearing housewives pretending they understood the game and were massive fans getting overexcited for 1 day at the thought of jeremy bates taking part in the first two sets of the first round once every 5 years!

if he was used as a springboard to develop more talent and get the posh cliff richard lovers off the tennis courts for a few years then he may have succeeded. There was always too much pressure on him every year. With the yanks and eastern europeans, even the spanish, they always seem to have a couple of new pretenders every year..for us it was the same guy year after year carrying the weight of expectation on his own. A joke?, don't think so pal!

Tim Henman....

He had a decent career i suppose, too bad he didnt win at least one major.

Tim Henman....

Always respect the opinion of a man who starts and ends every sentence with 10 full stops. :sorted:

Tim Henman....

Henman was a good player, but that was all he was. Please do not make him to be a great, because he was never that. Roger Taylor was probably the best briton before Henman. A gap of about 30years (excluding Greg) But after watching greats like Borg, Mcenroe, and Samprass. and a player like Connors that had fire in his belly. Tim was just a very good british player.

Tim Henman....

I don't think anyone's trying to make him out to be any more than that but I don't get things like Eddie the Eagle comparisons etc. He was just never quite good enough to beat the real top players as is said elsewhere but he spent several years in the World's top 10 for a reason.
