Time Wasting

Well....

There was a study done about time wasting (more importantly, minutes game was in action) in the Premier League.

And this game came out having saw the ball in play least....

2021/22 low: West Ham 1 Brentford 2 (3/10/21) 41:33

We also come 2nd from last with the amount of time ball in play in our games, below the leagues average.

if you are one of those fans finding yourself infuriated by the time wasted, be it getting the ball back into play at a goal kick or a throw in, then your mind is not playing tricks.

That’s all a bit meaningless, not directly related to time-wasting or one team over another in a specific game. It needs, at least, to be related to possession for that. A statistic for the sake of statistics.

… and that web site is the worst clickbait I’ve ever seen!

not sure why we don't have an automatic clock as in rugby which is stopped when players are 'injured' genuinely or otherwise. Wouldnt stop other forms of time wasting but it would reduce the pressure on the referee who could simply concentrate on the Schmeikelesque stuff and add time for that..

It’d really screw up Sky’s international scheduling; they’d never sanction that.

If all that happens is the ball is kept in play more by the teams who endlessly pass the ball around in their own defence

Then that is also meaningless

Mendy just been given a yellow for time wasting agaist leicester, his first offence of the game after 65 min s. However was allowed to do it 20-30 times against us with only a friendly chuckle from the ref.

This is it really - TV scheduling in general would be a nightmare. Though I suppose they manage to cope OK in the US where the stop clock format is common across most of their major sports.

If referees could just take a consistent zero tolerance approach to time wasting, the game would be improved and players simply wouldn't do it. That's the most frustrating thing as it's such an easy fix.

It is an unbalanced stat because Leicester, Brighton and Chelsea did all the time wasting against us and we didn't do any back however we did loads versus WHU.

Only means something if you measure which team is wasting the time and all yo need is a pair of eyes to see that.

Exactly. Caution early on and it'll stop it (or should).
Mendy being booked on 65 means for 25 minutes he won't be taking his time (or if he does, the ref may not do anything).

All depends on which side is winning or under pressure.

Keep in mind that Matthew has, i think in one of the GPG interviews, himself advocated for the stop-clock approach. I think it'd be fascinating to try - there'd be a lot of wrinkles to it, and ultimately it might not solve much (apart from ensuring the ball is in play more often) - teams would actually be able to take MORE breaks because, what would it matter? If the clock has stopped then we can have an injury timeout, drink, chat, etc. Or they can take as long as they like over corners, goal kicks, etc...

Personally think the scheduling / TV argument is easily overcome - plenty of sports have inexact finishing times, as indeed does football, and it's still likely to be done within 2.5hrs...

In years gone by, players could all have had a fag break and a swift half then…

First team to score 2 goals wins. Problem solved. Matches could last 5 minutes or 4 hours. Would encourage attacking football and no benefit in time wasting. Being trialed in Icelandic league next season. You heard it here first.

Remember seeing this before (or maybe very similar) and having a chat on a ref forum saying this is potentially very dangerous situation.
Many refs said they'd likely blow for a "foul" somewhere or if very close 50/50 for throw defensive as this could potentially cause a player to lose his cool and fly in and hurt someone.

Thankfully didn't happen in this game but will likely happen on Sunday morning if someone tried this.
