A Metropolitan Police statement said: "At approx 4.15am on Monday, officers stopped a vehicle after it was seen being driven erratically in Arthur Road, SW19. The male driver of the vehicle - a black Mercedes C250 - made off on foot. Officers were unable to locate the man. At approx 5.10am the body of a man fitting the same description was found on tracks near Wimbledon Park station."

Just desperate news. As Surrey supporters will especially know, he was a top lad and always very approachable. Huge talent lost far too young. R.I.P.

Very sad news. Sounds like it was a horrible accident rather than the first thoughts you have on hearing someone has been 'hit by a train'. I'm no cricket fan but obviously can sense he was a much loved, talented young man. RIP.

Took drugs for at least 3 months prior, and died in June, so wasn't even out of season. Even played a game the day before his death. Sadly, any lingering sadness I had for it has slowly waned. The fact he was driving while 4 times over the limit, on cocaine AND MDMA, shows a complete lack of any thoughtfulness of others, so quite frankly, no thanks.

MDMA was in the hair. Not found in his body. Closest thing to blood alcohol made it less than three. Body contained alcohol, cocaine and a combination of the two.

Parents have still lost a child and that is a tragedy regardless, that it was through his own stupidity doesn't alter that fact. Any waste of a young life is tragic in itself and I have sympathy with his family.

very sad. do appreciate what scruff puppy pup is saying in separating this and the balloon accident, and hanworthbee is right too of course that the moment he got in his car, the guy was asking for trouble and risking death (to himself or others) as a consequence of his actions. clearly the guy was young and reckless and took it a bit too far - of course we haven't all been in the same situation but i'm sure we all did some reckless stuff when we were 23, so it is a sad tale.

i agree too that it is very hard to believe that these people didn't know about his drug use at the time. we can only hope that some good comes out of it, i.e. some future young talents will resist the temptation to idle away their freetime with drugs, with this lesson in mind.

I spoke to the metro's chief cricket writer in Sri Lanka for the world t20 and the story that broke out today certainly left out a couple of thing's he said he'd heard re Maynard but couldn't prove.

Sorry for a long post but for reasons I am about to explain,I have very very strong feelings about anyone who drives a car under the influence of drink or drugs.

Some years ago I was out walking pushing my then 3 month old son (he's 18 tomorrow ) in his pram.it was a lovely sunny June Sunday afternoon.my wife was at home having a nap with our 2 year old daughter,life was good,a great feeling to be out alone with your brand new baby son,I was totally relaxed and at peace with myself.
Suddenly the peace of our quiet village was shattered by the sound of a revving car engine and screaming tyres, an almost out of control car came screaming round the bend mounted the kerb and missed the pram by about six inches. My immediate reaction was to say "f*C***g Hell ! The driver who I recognised as a local "druggie " pulled up about 50 yards away and started screaming abuse at me Saying the usual " what did you f***ing say mate ".. Being alone and pushing a baby in a pram I was not in a position to do a lot and I was in a pretty shaken state.
By the time I reached home I had composed myself and without a word to my wife,I went to the garage and picked up a hammer. I knew what I had to do.
My wife asked me what I was doing and I replied "Just going out to sort out a bit of business " ( I knew where this individual lived ). My wife brought me to my senses after I had explained what had happened. " Please think of me and our two young children " she said." Think of the consequences of smashing this person to pulp" He just isnt worth it and he will get his comeuppance you'll see "
Well she was right....Just a few months later again driving under the influence he hit a car head on in a country lane near our village.It was feared the lady passenger in the other car would never walk again,the "druggie" was killed. (Fortunately the lady recovered )

Not a very Christian emotion ,I know,but I felt justice had been done. I feel the same way about Tom Maynard and any other person who endangers others lives out on the road by driving under the influence .

I don't expect you to feel any different. There was some talk of 'if there hadn't been a barrier in the road (where the police stopped him), he might have been all right'. There can be plenty of ifs buts and maybes but the clear one was 'if he had got a taxi instead of getting into his car he'd (probably) still be alive today'.

The coroner described it as 'absolutely tragic'.

As an aside, she also said that hair should be used in drugs testing. What are people's thoughts on that?

Good, professional sportsman should not be touching any sort of drug. They're supposed to be role models at the end of the day.

I have great sympathy for those who have trouble with drink and/or drugs. Yes, lives have been ruined by this cocktail in this instance and it seems likely that he only had himself to blame. It's a case of "there but for the grace of god go I" for me.
