Just watching the highlights of Southampton being torn apart by Spurs, and trying to remember if we've been dealt an absolute tonking since our promotion to the Premier League? Brighton tore us apart at the Amex, but that somehow ended 3-3. Can't think of us being totally bossed in the last three-and-a-bit seasons. Pretty impressive. Am I being short-sighted?

The nearest to it was the 4-0 defeat at Villa Park in 22-23. Much more comprehensive than the 5-1 the week before at Newcastle where we were competitive even at 3-1. Maybe also the 0-3 at home to Arsenal that season where they brought a 15 year old sub on at the end.

No 6+ goal eviscerations like Norwich got but still very comprehensive defeats where we had nothing to offer in return.

Funnily all in our best season to date. The Arsenal loss coming after beating Man U 4-0 and that lovely smashing of Leeds 5-2.

Ha, that's a yes then! :)

A case of rose-tinted glasses here then!

The 4-1 defeat at Southampton in our first season in the PL and 4-1 at home to Wolves last year weren't pretty either. Overall in this league we've conceded four or more goals in a game seven times.

Mind you, for balance we've scored four or more goals in a game on eight occasions and remarkably four of those have come in the last five home matches.

If it's any consolation I read your post and completely agreed, we are undefeated, by far the greatest etc

But then along come the usual people with working memories tsk

In some respects, though, the Southampton felt like less of a tonking and more a case of us simply being utter sh*t. And even then I think we got back to 1-1 (from absolutely nowhere) and had a few chances to score towards the end that might just have made it interesting.

We missed Raya in that Southampton game. We let in a couple of soft goals. Mind you he was partly at fault for the Newcastle 1-5. Passed straight to their forward as we were settling down just before ht.

I always thought we were in with a shout in that game but kept doing something stupid. Wolves at home 1-4 was similar.

The Arsenal 0-3 we were just flat that day. Sunday lunchtime wasn't it?

The AV 0-4 could have been a lot worse. We were very very poor. That's my vote. Actually thought the game the other day was going the same way but we improved thankfully.

Not bad for nearly four years.

Wasn't helped by Alvaro in goal appearing never to have played football before. And Toney wandering around like he'd got lost on the Covid ward

I was there and felt Villa were possessed on the day, let off the leash after getting Gerrard the sack. Yes, we were poor, but still normally manage to limit the impact.
They’d have tonked most teams that day.

Yes I remember them both being painful, not only for the above reason, but also the very gobby home fans next to the away sections taking the piss.

Saints away - pouring with rain, could not find a parking space, no decent pub option, got tonked by an average team with their fans laughing at us, got lost trying to find the car park, M3 speed restrictions for virtually the who way home. If Carlsberg did away days this would not be one of them.

Worst results - the Southampton and Wolves defeats mentioned are up there.
Losing 3-1 at home to Everton (September 2023) was probably more disappointing than either as at least we had mid-season injury issues for those two games...I was pretty sure we'd beat Everton but we were lucky that was kept to 3-1.

Most comprehensively outplayed, regardless of quality of opposition - I think the Arsenal 3-0 in 2022 is the worst, felt like we were playing a team from at least one division above in the cup, barely had a kick all day. I've had that feeling for bits of hard games other times... but that feeling lasted all day that time. We only lost two home games all season.... so put that Arsenal performance in context. At least we robbed a point from the away game :sorted: #loveVAR

At least we've beaten Southampton 4 times in a row since and been able to throw "it's a long way back to London (Hampshire) when you're ****" back at them every single time. I'm pleased people do not forget!

Sunday midday kick off due to the death of the Queen and no atmosphere.

Last time we lost by 5 goals in in December 2016.

That game felt like the Wolves one at home in 2014, where we also lost 3-0. We were absolutely dominated by a far better team.

Wouldn't say it was flat, Arsenal couldn't have played much better across 90 minutes.

Tonking

The Arsenal one is the one that stands out. They just completely out classed us that day. 3-0 felt generous to us.

Tonking

As most have said - Arsenal has been the most comprehensive to date, couldn't lay a finger on them for 90 minutes that day.

Newcastle was an odd one - we lost 5-1 but 4 of them were defensive howlers so it wasn't them blowing us away.

We didn't rob them in the return at the Emirates at all. Amidst all the entitled media sound and fury about what was an incredibly marginal offside decision for Ivan's equaliser it's often forgotten that we had an absolutely atrocious decision given against us earlier in the match when Mbeumo (I think) had a goal disallowed for a non existent foul. The draw was entirely fair and merited.

"Robbed" was tongue in cheek, just used that word because I know how much it annoyed them. it was a procedural failure by VAR not to check the correct offside that allowed Ivan's goal to stand, though, rather than it being incredibly close. Still a great point against the odds and showed our character to stay in the game and have that opportunity. it allowed that pretty long unbeaten run to continue too.

I had actually forgotten about the decision that went against us to be honest, which shows the danger of these big club narratives.

Liverpool put 4 past us in their last visit to the Gtech and it's not even got a mention...

But generally yes, i think it's impressive that we haven't suffered many thrashings since coming up

Tonking

The 0-4 at Villa was the most comprehensive thrashing I've seen in our PL days. We were completely dismantled and humiliated. It could have been a lot worse too had Villa been more clinical.

Prior to that, 1-6 away to Colchester takes some beating though the 0-7 at Peterborough might have been even worse. Luckily I missed it!

Ah yes, that wasn't pretty from us.

They were by far the better team, although the ref was an utter bellend as I recall.
