Wow 🔺NEW: Tony Bloom, the owner of Brighton & Hove Albion, has been accused of operating a secret £600m gambling syndicate to bet on football matches, using accounts including some belonging to Nigel Farage’s former chief of staff

This seems pretty clear:

"A worldwide ban on betting on football was introduced for all those involved in the game at Premier League, English Football League, National League, WSL and WSL2 levels, as well as those at clubs in the Northern, Southern and Isthmian leagues and all other Participants who do not fall into the category below.
Participants covered by the ban will be prohibited from betting, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition that takes place anywhere in the world.
This also includes a worldwide ban on betting on any other football-related matter. For example, the transfer of players, employment of managers or team selection. The passing of inside information to somebody that uses the information for betting remains prohibited."

Bloom, Benham and the owners of Stoke (Bet 365 family) have exemptions.


In 2014 Bloom was given special dispensation by the Football Association to operate his betting consultancy, Starlizard, and continue to bet on football through his syndicate. The exemption was extended to other club owners with pre-existing business interests in gambling, including Brentford’s Matthew Benham.

The Times understands, however, that Bloom is not permitted to bet on Brighton, any other Premier League game, or matches in knockout competitions involving Premier League teams.

Bloom is in the clear UNLESS his syndicate bet on matches involving Brighton, The Premier League and competitions in which Brighton (and maybe Hearts too) play.

No. It’s about Bloom being accused of dodging his ban on betting on PL matches.

However we must remember that this could be all just b***ocks.

I thought it was about him dodging paying his placer, who is used so that bookies don't know whose bet they are really accepting?

If the allegations are correct then he may have some explaining to do to the Gambling Commission.

Mmmm...doesn't cover bets placed via a proxy though. Or bets placed on other PL, FA Cup etc games

It states can’t bet on competitions Brighton directly involved in, so that must include PL and FA cup as they are in them?

The wording suggests the competition as a whole. At least that is my interpretation.
