given our dramatic slide in form and the imminent nationwide transfer deadline, i wonder if there will be any comings or goings?

obviously we're not likely to pay money for anyone but a loan
(perhaps of an experienced midfield player and / or a full back)
must be possible?

and in the other direction i wonder if smith and / or sonko might
be sold?

I think Tony Curry was probably the last loan that Ron will allow us, and I can't see any experienced players coming to us for a relegation battle, which despite me trying to be optimistic is exactly what we're in now, when they can go to a better placed club with more money to spend on wages.

As for Smithy and Ibu, if we lose them before the end of the season we're as good as down so my fingers are firmly crossed that they stay. Smithy still has another year on his contract at the end of this one so I'm sure he'll leave in the summer rather than now as getting a fee before his contact expires isn't an issue, and I believe we have the option to extend Sonko's as well, but whether that's our decision or his I don't know, if it's his I can't see him staying so maybe some transfer money would come in very handy before he goes for free. This would leave us however with an unfillable hole in the centre of defence that even Steve Jones could walk through!

No footy agent in his right mind is going to allow his player to sign a contract which says effectively :

"Brentford have the unilateral option to keep you for another season on the same terms and conditions and you have no say in it"

The posters on here who have been pencilling Sonko automatically into their all star BFC team for next season and whose presence would raise the average age to about 15 have not been thinking it through.

In all my years of watching Brentford, transfer deadline day has virtually always been a disappointment or irrelevance.
The tone of WD's comments suggest that there is little likelihood of any movement this year. IMO we need at least two, maybe 3 loan players, who are unaffected by the current malaise. Clearly it won't happen & there are those who say we can't afford it, but without some sort of change we are doomed. The effort is there but confidence is so low that only new blood, imo, will help.
The worry is next year - a mid table 3rd division team or a relegation placed 2nd division team. Which is preferable?

Im sorry but having seen a fair few 3rd Division teams this season I feel we would be struggling there as well.

Rowlands was the only player with over 100 league games i8n the squad yesterday.

This tells the whole tale.

Without experience we are lambs to the slaughter.

We need 2 experienced loanees this week but will it happen ....

Sonko is surely as good as gone. Ideally for a fee whilst he is in contract. Otherwise.....

I agree. Even if he's on much higher wages than the rest of the squad, if he's contracted to us then we can get a fee from any potential buyer, and there must be quite a few out there by now, that would more than cover the amount spent on his wages in that time.

I can see a few problems with it though. Firstly, that we can't sell him on and we end up with a very good player but one who is draining what very little money there is left in the club, leaving us worse off than if we'd just let him walk for free in the summer. Secondly, that it will cause a great deal of disharmony in the dressing room with Sonko being on much higher wages than the rest while he is still here. And where would you draw the line, surely the same should be done with Martin Rowlands as well to get a transfer fee, but then it could spiral from there.

Very difficult situation, as I can't see the options of the second year of the contract being exactly the same as this year for Ibu.

Why should it?, his agent couldn't find him a club bigger than us paying £500 per week last year so how could he negotiate a pay rise 1 year in advance. I am not convinced that sonko has attracted the attention that some people think he has. He is an u21 international and hopefully still our secret. I think he will play for us next year , remember he was on a short term contract for ages before signing a full contract and nobody came in for him then, and that was when he was good and we were top!

Some people think too much about what people are oing/thinking and start to believe their own imagination!

But equally we don't know whether his contract does guarantee him a pay rise if we take up the option? I see no reason why this could not have been written into the contract - a sort of "well you can benefit by extending the contract so we will benefit by having a pay rise".

We also don't know how much Sonko earns per week - I suspect it could work out to be more than £500 per week...

We do have an option on IBU but the terms are drasitically higher to that at the moment.

It's a big wage raise and money etc. to pay for accomadation etc.

What's the point of an "extra year option" for the club, then?

If his contract just expired at the end of the season, without this extra year option, we have to negotiate new terms with him, assuming we want to, and he is free to talk to other people.

By what you're saying, given that we have "the option of an extra year", isn't the situation exactly the same as if we didn't have the option? What's the point of the club having the so-called option of an "extra year" if the player can say no or demand more money for it, just as it would be without this option?

I would guess he is free to walk.

If a club doesn't offer improved terms the players is automatically on a free, or am I wrong?

If this improved deal has already been negotiated and Brentford turn it down then they would not be offering an increase so he can leave for nothing.

I would think BFC should do their upmost to keep Sonko, perhaps investing the money saved on Marshall, this new deal can't be worth as much as he is on. Provided we average £500k per week, what is the problem?
