I read the article with disbelief.
They took into acccount Turkey's good record and that the Macedonians caused provocation when celebrating their goal..................!!!!
No warning either I see of being thrown out the competition if any more trouble.
Typical copout by Uefa.
Apart from the incidents involving Leeds, Arsenal & England which we all know about. Here are some examples that were documented in the press or fans involved at the time told me about of Turkish fans 'good' behaviour over recent years: -
March 2003 - Beskitas v Lazio - Lazio attacked in ground, Lazio fan lucky not too lose sight in his left eye after being struck by a bottle. In the return leg in Rome riot police clashed with Beskitas fans.
Oct 2002 - Fenerbache fan has his ear sliced off by Gala' fans!!
March 2002 - Roma v Galatasaray - Fans, players and officials of both clubs fight during and after the game. UEFA blames Roma for starting the trouble despite evidence to the contray!!
Mar 2001 - PSG v Galatasaray - Fighting between Paris St Germain and Galatasaray fans and a pitch invasion by two Turkish supporters.
Euro 2000 - Sweden v Turkey in Eindhoven - Turkish fans took down a Swedish flag from a statue and replaced it with a turkish flag, around 1500 Turkish fans fought approx. 300 Swedish supporters.
Belgium v Turkey - A mainly Club Brugge mob of Belgium fans fought battles with Turkish fans, as well as Turkish locals after Blegium's defeat.
Domestic games in 1999/98 - Jetpaspor v Gaziantepspor - At least 90 people were injured when violence erupted at a Turkish first division match between Jetpaspor and Gaziantepspor. Four police were among the injured as fighting spread to the crowd. Two people were very seriously hurt!
Angry fans punched and kicked Turkey's national goalkeeper Rustu Recber after Fenerbache were knocked out of the Turkish Cup by lowly Pendikspor.
Pendikspor beat the wealthy Istanbul side 2-1 to the fury of a group of fans who besieged Fenerbache's ground for hours, threatening players inside.
Captain Recber recieved the worst of the treatment when fans opened the doors of his car as it left the complex and kicked and punched the keeper before the police arrived.
These incidents are the tip of the iceberg of course. Still, they were provoked in all cases
