Underrated Players

Denny Mundee.

I saw him playing for the reserves once (against Chelsea?) during one of his periods of being overlooked for the first team. He played central midfield and he absolutely ran the show. Good first touch. Time on the ball. Short and long passing. Well timed runs into the box. It was a feckin' masterclass.

Such a talented footballer. :(

Had a great run of goalscoring for the first team, but then disappeared without trace (or to Brighton). Lacked pace, but found a trick to beat defenders without needing pace - sadly, after playing him once, they were wise to his one trick and he became ineffective

Not quite true.

Scored lots of goals in 1993-94 but by the start of the 94-95 season we had signed Forster and Taylor.
He then developed into a central midfield player and was very effective for much of that campaign, played in all the games towards the end.

Yeah I know. I suppose my point was something along the lines of maybe we where playing him out of position all those years?

Who knows, it was just one of those performances where he was head and shoulders the best player on the park that night and I saw him in a completely different light.

He might even have played on the right side, because Stephenson picked up a serious injury earlier that season.

Thinking back Ratcliffe played in a lot of games and Paul Smith would also have been at the club.

Where's Chapman when you need him.

Denny was a wonderful one trick pony. When the famous shuffle came off he was unplayable as against bristol Robvers when he scored that famous hat trick.

I also remember a scorching screamer against Crewe as well as his nonchalant penalty taking technique - pity he didn't change it against Hudersfield in the Playoffs after scoring 2 pens against them in the league games !

Better than some of the no-trick ponies we've had since.

Funny how times change though - if he was on the team now we'd say he was the best player we had. Back then, he was a squad member/utility man. Like I said, how times have changed.

Now we all go apeshite over anyone that an ounce of flair in their boots !!!

Underrated Players

I'll never forget Denny's goal against Bristol Rovers when he was stuck by the corner flag and shuffled 4 of their players before smashing it in :sorted:
