i agree. The "British" Open could learn so much from this event. For a start - ONLY golfers and caddies inside the rope. Understand Nick Faldo tried to get this through to the people in charge at the time and was told that 500 people per group were required. /sigh

Went to the time Mark O'Meara won. It was fine. I stood next to Tiger when he hit a fairway wood. I've never heard a crack so loud outside a firing range.

I did manage to escape the rope and stood on the 18th as Mark was presenting his trophy. Never managed to find any footage of it however. Was challenged but in an oh so polite way. :)

I went to the one in Lytham st Anne’s ? Liverpool anyway about maybe five years ago. Quality day out !! Didn’t bother following the big boys as they had too many people near them but had a great time watching the rest and a total booze fest

This was at Royal Birkdale in 1998. 22 years ago. Christ.

no. it was in liverpool and within last 8 years so I THINK Previous Open Championship Results and Winners - The Open it was 2014 at Hoylake I guess it could have been 2012 at Lytham St Annes.

edit: Im 99% it was 2014 because I remember having a picture of the golf and also a picture of my youngest daughter near each other on the same phone and unless i put the camera in places it shouldnt have been then she must have been born by then.

Lytham St Annes isn't really "in Liverpool", or even nearby. It must by Hoylake as you said. And we are talking about different years, clearly ?

This isnt how I was anticipating this thread to be. Roll on tomorrow.

US Masters 2020

Would be one of these, I have the same trouble remembering dates and venues :)

146th Open - Royal Birkdale, won by J Spieth (I was at the last day of that one), agree about walking the course with the "minor" players, you do see more and can get a little closer to the action.
143rd Open - Royal Liverpool, won by Rory
141st Open - Royal Lytham St Annes, won by Ernie Els

Agree completely. Think the first masters I saw in the early 80s when Seve won. Think it was 1982 or 83. Fell in love with the masters thereafter. Remember the late 1980s and early 1990s when the tournament was dominated by Europeans.

Been fortunate to have visited the Augusta and watched the masters and back nine on a Sunday. Truly a breathtaking experience. One of the best sporting weeks.

How did you manage that then?

US Masters 2020

Nice. I got tickets for the World Matchplay final at Wentworth. Ian Woosnam v Mark McNulty back in 1990 was great but final day of the Masters is in a different level

Good stuff, funnily enough I have never seen a golfing event in the UK.

US Masters 2020

Well I've sold my soul to the devil and paid Sky £10 to have Sky Golf for a month. Although I don't want to pay on principle, it's still good value compared to £15 for 90 mins of boring PL.

US Masters 2020

....having cogitated and deliberated long and hard.....its Finau....Reed...and Fleetwood.....against the field......win/place/show.

I see Dechambeau is favourite with the bookies. Hopefully he will have a disastrous time and miss the cut.

I applaud him for the efforts he has put in and his appliance of science, however golf is an art and the enjoyment comes from seeing the likes of Sevy in his pomp. If I wanted to see people hitting the ball a country mile then I would go down the range!!!

The courses are not designed for players that can drive the ball 400 yards so I hope the powers that be can do something to allow art to supersede science, perhaps do something with the ball to reduce distance

Would like Rory or the European contingent to supply the winner however think Wolfe will be a good bet

Yeah, perhaps only allow players to have a sand wedge. That would be interesting.

US Masters 2020

Bit buzz about DeChambeau but has he got the touch in his game for Augusta.

Tommy Fleetwood has gone well in the majors recently. He's my outside shout

Can’t agree. He’s used data analytics to improve his swing and give himself an advantage.

It’s akin to what we’re doing for football. IMHO, there should be no penalty or adjustment because he’s used information available to him and improved in ways his competitors can’t or won’t.

US Masters 2020

So the late starters will continue at 12 or 1230 our time
And then go back out for round 2

While the players who have finished will have to wait until 1900 or 2000 our time
And then run out of time to finish round 2

And to make it more ridiculous

Justin Rose will go out on Hole 10 and play Holes 10 to 18 at 1230 to complete R 1

And about 1541
Justin Rose will go out on Hole 10 and play Holes 10 to 18 again
Followed by Holes 1 to 9

Why would they run out of time?

Why is that "more ridiculous" or, indeed, "ridiculous"?

Don't really get your point. They've lost 3 hours in, as you say, a time of year when they have more limited daylight hours. They will make it up over the long 4 days of the tournament.

I can't see the need to get all vexed about it TBH.

US Masters 2020

It just seems odd that players who have uncomplete rounds come back and play 27 holes

While the players who have played sit around and do nothing

Did you expect the players to have uncomplete round to not come back and play those holes? I'm sat here very confused.

The other players who were scheduled to play in the morning yesterday will play in the afternoon today. So there is equitable treatment insofar as it will be them that have to come back and play more holes tomorrow.

US Masters 2020

I expect the players who have played 9 to play the next 9
Then the other lot play Round 2

Then the late starters play Round 2 after that

US Masters 2020

It will be a mess on Saturday anyway

We will not know the cut until mid morning as R2 will still be going on on Saturday

That would mean that tee-times would be the same relatively as the previous day. Which never happens in an attempt to ensure that all players get equitable conditions.

US Masters 2020

Round 2 is off

The only group with 2 players has had a withdrawl....

So Sung Kang plays on his own with a substitute

This was mentioned amongst the interminable preamble during the week. There is an ordinary guy, a member (so he doesn’t get lost, presumably), on standby to make up a pair or whatever, if needed. Over the years he’s played with some Greats, whilst trying to stay in the background...
