walsall reports

An outstanding performance today from all players, the only thing missing was our ability to stick the ball in the net!

We dominated the whole game and kept walsall down to two chances, a flying header from the backtracking tabb and a shot from leitao when clean through magnificently saved by nelson.

Rather then go on about the chances a brief summary of who should have scored in the first half. Hargreaves from a burton set up, rhodes from a one in one from a burton through ball then a sitter when set up by burton. Rankin put clean through by burton but leaves ball behind. Burton turns defence inside out and hits post. Hutch had two good header oppoprtunities and rhodes one.

All in all we absolutely slaughtered them first half and only goal is a fumbled corner that somehow sneaked in.

Second half much of the same as burton slides rhodes through for a one on one and he drags ball wide. Again we create dozens of opportunities but just can't seem to convert. At 1.0 you are always nervy as walsall smacked long balls into the wind that we coped very well with with nelson coming out to punch a bouncing ball when their player looked favourite then saving point blank in the last minute from a scramble.

We were denied 3 cast iron pens in the 2nd half the like I have never seen. Firstly rhodes again tore into them, cut inside the right back and was heading for goal when he was brought down from behind. OK, maybe the defender got a touch but the ref was the only one who saw it. With us all fuming the ref was given the perfect opportunity to make amends when less than a minute later ranking went round two players and as he looked to cut back from the byline just inside the 6 yard box he was clearly upended only for thr ref to give a goal kick. I could not believe it. About 5 minutes later we pinged a free kick into the box and burton went to chest it but their defender had both arms round his neck and dragged him to the floor, ref plays on. The ref kind of lost it after the pen incidents and started doing very strange things but the worst decision of all was when rhodes was flying down the left wing and their full back bodychecked him and he flew into the boarding. After a brief mellee rhodes had to go off injured and the ref gave them a throw on.

The ref only made 1 real blunder in the first half which was to book merson for diving when it was a cast iron foul against sodje. The lino on new road put his flag up on average about 5-10 seconds after the event so was making a rod for his own back as nobody knew what he was flaging for.

All in all, 10/10's go to hargreaves, burton, rhodes, and eddie with all following close behind except lawrence who gets downmarked for a first half performance where he appeared to be on another planet!

I think the players owed the fans a performance and they gave us one. After replaced at half time at the Cherries, Burton was hurt and he was fighting for his football career. Rhodes far better than Tabb to day - strange to say.

Should have been all over by half time.

Rhodes missed a good chance at start of the 2nd half which should have had us fans smoking cigars.

Only one small minus is the fact that again our strikers haven`t found the net.

Right, most of the stuff mhead bee is right,McShane was a dirty wancker, flipping ruined the game,Walsall always looked to play the man,not the ball.Rankin and Burton worked very well,Rhodes needed a guiding arm put around him,to stop him from smacking the ball from 35 yards and hoping it will go in,but looked good on the run,and at least he's trying a shot, something we've been missing(talking of Rhodes, anyone else see his awesome goals in shooting practise before the game?Flipping amazing!),Burton needs to come off if May comes on at the end,as neither are willing to run on to knock downs,so no scoring chances are created.Eddie and Hargreaves,Sodje and Turner, absolutely superb,no mistakes, all get 10/10s,Turner looked very assured.Nelson, what can you say?Martin at the end summed it up:he had a dodgy spell, but came back, put that behind him and made three good saves,a punch late on and a superb dive in the first half from Leitao, and to keep out Tabby's header.Don't give stick to Lawrence!I really don't like him,but apart from not calling for headers a few times,he made no mistakes, and was very assured.

Walsall only had one good player,Leitao, who they took off-???.Idiots...McShane..well-Fecking ****.

Referee, good in first half, even if he made a howler with Merson/Sodje.Lost control after the penalty claims, never regained it.

Need to score, need a man who's gonna smack in loose balls on corners, other than that, well done Bees.Good improvement.Bring on Luton!

I counted 10 clear chances inthe first half and it continued into the second half. There were moments when the ball could have run to create more chances but didn't. MA's relief at the end was huge, standing in front of the Brook Road drawing his hand across his brow. Full marks to him for giving such conspicuous support to Stuart Nelson at the end - I didn't think Nelson did a thing wrong today (his save from Leitao in the first half was so important) but no doubt a lot of people will criticise him. I can only think that MA was looking to see how the Deon/Isiah combination would work once more in advance of the Luton Game. Why otherwise not start with May and Rankin? Rhodes just gets better and better when he runs at defences - one fast raid from inside the halfway line on the left wing through to the right side of their penalty area was electric - reminiscent of Thierry Henri.

But where are the goals going to come from? It must be a nightmare for MA.

I thought Lawrence *takes deep breath* had a good game. Some good crosses and runs and passes ( although in first half a few passes went to the opposition) It was also reassuring seeing Nelson make some very good saves - especially that near Own Goal by Tabb. Is Rhodes ok? did he hit his head on the side? whats the latest on him? because he played fantastically. He's what we need - someone who'll run at them, and isnt scared of taking players on -instead of our usual "lets walk it in" attitude.

The most important win of the season in my view as it has arrested the slump and maybe put us back on track.

A performance of character and some football too in the first half but today was all about the result and the clean sheet too was very encouraging.

Walsall were the ideal team to play as they had a lot of raw kids and experienced journeymen - a bit of a mirror image of us you could say.

The difference was that we wanted to win but they went through the motions, Merson aprt who was terrific.

Nelson too responded well, making 3 excellent saves, two early one, including a fantastic reflex save low down by the post as well as a match saving block from a hard shot right at the death.

He talked well, caught crosses and looked to be back on track - another worry lessened.

The back four played well as a unit albeit under little pressure with Sodje and Turner imperious, Lawrence reallyexcellent at right back and Frampron solid.

No bookings too, another bonus.

Tabb had a good first half and looked more confident, Hargreaves was a terrier and Hutch made an enormous difference with his all energy display.

Yes he missed a good chance from 20 yards and also 2 or 3 headed chances but he made their keeper work with a smart volley and as you can see, got into the box more than any other midfielder on the pitch. He defended well too, a great return to GP.

Rhodes was fantastic, pace, control and power. He had one cleared off the line and fizzed another over before missing a difficult oneon one at the start of the second half.

He showed his naivety when injuring himself chasing a lost cause - apologies if I saw it incorrectly but to me the ball was always going into touch and he should not have gone for it.

Hopefully it's not too serious as he adds so much to us and his confidence is growing.

May was droped to the bench and Burton and Rankin linked up well in the first half and Burton's display against his old team (like Lawrence) was excellent, great control and tight self-discipline, as well as tackling back.

He should have scored, hitting the post when he had the whole goal to aim for.

2 shouts for a penalty too in the second half but we threatened rarely.

May replaced the injured Rhodes and battled well but with little effect.

We dropped deeper and deeper in the last 15 minutes, settling for the win but one Nelson save apart - and a good one it was, he weathered the storm.

Today was about the result, a clean sheet and total comitment for the cause.

There is no doubt that the players are playing for the manager and the disciplined performance will have delighted him.

Given the suspensions of Sodje and Lawrence I would suspect that O'Connor and Fitz will start at Luton with hopefully an unchanged midfield and front 2.

As I always say, things are never as good or as bad as they appear but today''s win was crucial and the confidence will start flooding back.

walsall reports

Better today, should have rapped it up in the first half, how often have we said that. Thought Lawerence played well last home game and today his best in a Brentford shirt overlapped well and was strong in the tackle ( sorry I'm not his mum !! ) but credit where credit is due. Eddie certainly brings more bite and speed into the midfield hope Rhodes is OK. Agree with all the above, he just gets better and better. We might just get some big bucks for him next season. And reading the Chronnie the news Lionel Rd looks promising. God I do hope so. :)

You certainly did see it incorrectly!

McShane and Rhodes were both running for the ball, but it was clearly going out. Just as Rhodes eases off, McShane gives him a strong barge (way out of reach of the ball) which propelled him into the advertising hoardings. The ref should have pulled out his red card, but bottled it (just like he bottled our penalty claims).

McShane was left in no doubt about what the Paddock thought of him and extra stewards were drafted in. Cue entertaining "dance" between big Gold Range bloke and Dangerous! lol And fair to play to today's skipper, Chris Hargreaves, for coming over at the end to give Dangerous a high five!

Great performance today, but when will we start scoring goals?

Why the suspensions of Sodje and Lawrence?

I can't think that Lawrence has beem booked - or even played enough games to accumulate 5 bookings.

As for Sam. Well I know he has been booked on several occasions but can't remember his last - presumably Bournemouth if he is now due a suspension for 5 yellows.

Can anyone enlighten me please.

walsall reports

The answer is I really don't think we are going to score many this season. We need to keep spreading them round, hope Sodje, Hargreaves and Eddie contribute and keep it tight at the back.

Looks like our top scorer will be lucky to get 12 ! I really think that Rhodes, if played centrally would score regularly but maybe that's one for next season.

The official site has given the goal to Tabby today rather than an OG. Good, that's him on 2 then, we need another half dozen from him now.

walsall reports

Entertaining game which we deserved to win although Walsall to their credit came to win the game. Nelson and Lawrence made nonsense of recent threads on here and Luton Eddie is back and how!! We won everything in the air and but for better finishing ( no change there) would have won by a hatful. Rhodes is now a real contender for a place in the starting eleven.

Lawrence got booked 4 times in 5 games up to Swindon and jad one from earlier in the season. Yellow card suspensions don't apply until 7 days after the offence.

NLB's view is exactly how I and those around me in the paddock saw it.

walsall reports

Never got a chance to finish what I was saying earlier as wife returned home with baby asnd started nagging me to "help out" with the shopping.

Anyway, I thought lawrence was awful versus swindon and again first half today. He went for a ball that was already being attacked by one of our players no less than 4 times in the first half today and clobbered our player everytime! The funniest one was when the ball pinged out from a corner and someone was lining up a 25 yard pile driver and JL ran straight into him and they ended up in a heap as the ball ran between them. He improved massively in the 2nd half and that is why I would still give him a 7/10.

If you want to know why we are pushing for play offs and walsall are struggling I think I have the answer. I arrived at 2PM today and the whole bees squad spent 50 mins doing warm ups, 5 a side, headers, shooting, tackling, jogging, sprints etc. Walsall amble out at 2.30, 9 players spent about 10 mins in a circle doing some strange leg waving and a few star jumps before wandering off. All of their subs actually spent about 15 mins in the centre circle just showing off a few tricks to each other looking remarkably like a bunch of school kids in the play ground sharing a fag! Paul Merson may be the player manager but he did not even bother taking part in the warm up and I wonder what sort of message that sends out. At half time the walsall subs just stood in the centre circle again pi55ing around with the ball like schol kids on a sunday morning whilst the rest of the team went in for a team talk. Merson may still have quality but he completely drifted out of the game after about 20 mins and then we saw the odd glimpse in the last 5 mins.(bit of a gut on him too!)

Pleased with today's performance. Lovely move in the 1st half when Hutch had acres of room in the middle and after a strong run played the ball to Burton who was unlucky to hit the post.

Also thought Walsall were a better side than when we played them at the Bescott.

I though they were pretty sh1te relying on the long ball to a lone striker who could not head but could run up his own ar5e from time to to time!

We played some great stuff but sh1t I wish we could score, burton could have had 7 assists today if we could hit the target, but hey, I do not think goal diffirence is going to be a factor for us this season so who cares as long as we win!

For what it's worth, my take on it was both were chasing a ball clearly going out. 9 times out of ten one or both players would pull up. But I felt McShane knew he could put one on Rhodes and did so. I thought it was cynical and unnecessary but the biggest factor was the speed both players were going at and the short distance between pitch and advertising. The speed carried Rhodes into the boards.

Surprised McShane didn't get booked for the challenge though...

walsall reports

Agree with everything above. Just a few points:

1. Burton was superb, and the old woman at the front of Brook Road who thinks he's rubbish is definitely wrong. Held the ball up well, and won headers which he had no right to win

2. How great it is to have Eddie Hutchinson back. We have missed his energy, ball-winning ability and determination. Talbot will not get back in the team.

3. Yes, McShane is a very dirty player, and had the nerve to ironically applaud Brook Road at the end. Should have been sent off beforehand.

4. That was the worst refereeing performance I have seen for a long time. Every decision was wrong, even those that went in our favour (and there weren't many of those)

5. Worrying lack of conviction in front of goal. We should have hammered Walsall today.

Hargreaves got one sliding tackle on the slag near the end for the crowd but didnt quite make contact lol

Good performance against a one man team (Merson), a least today we created the chances, the right bounce and we could have got a hatfull. Eddie would probably have buried several of his chances if he had a run of games behind him. He certainly made a great difference today.
Nelson great saves, still looks wobbly on crosses but clean sheet will do him good as will MA's attention to him after the game.
Noticed Burton went straight off after the game didnt shake hands with anyone or wave to crowd :nono:

Lawrence did alright he just went for some headers which hutch had covered and he went to shoot when he could clearly see rhoades running for it and they collided.

walsall reports

Hmm, good result, well needed three points, but can't see it was the magnificent performance some seemed to think! Must just be the relief of getting back on track after 3 straight defeats I reckon..

Good battling win though, little good football apart from some brilliant runs from Rhodes, my MOM, if he'd showed a litte more composure at times he could have got two goals of the season in one game!

Thought Walsall were pretty poor and we should have got a few goals against them, was getting worried in the second half that we were letting them back into it as a few gaping holes appeared in midfield, which better teams would have taken advantage of but fortunately we got stronger again at the end, especially when May came on. Thought he did well with Burton again, can't understand why we started with Burton and Rankin? Thought we'd all agreed that partnership didn't work... !!

But there you go, three points in the bag and just 2 points off the play-offs.. oh, and QPR plummeting down the championship table as well!! Nice!

spot on I commented exactly the same before the game and at half-time. reminded me of Thompson's warm ups here 12 months ago. Also agree with regards to Merson. swanned around for the first 20 mins pinging passes all over the park and then dissapeared for the next hour. I think we were a bit in awe of him to start with. gotta say also cant agree with some saying Walsall looked good. I thought they were the worst team I have seen down here this season (particulary slow at the back) and really we could and should of hammered em.

walsall reports

Agree with pretty much everything said above. Defence was generally solid (although their # 20, Taylor I think) turned Frampton very easily. Lawrence I thought did well at right back, and has already been said, Nelson made some important saves. A big game for him following recent performances.

Like others, I had hoped to see Rhodes and Tabb in the starting line up and we were rewarded with some fast, slick moves of real quality. Eddie played well. I'm not his biggest fan, but he got stuck in today and looked good in midfield. The game should have been won by half time.

Burton worked tirelessly, helped to created loads of chances, and tackled back very well (especially in the last few minutes).

A really important result - still only 3 points (well, 4 given our goal difference) off 4th spot.

I thought we played well, more so in the first half than the second. MOTM Eddie Hutchinson had a storming 1st 45 minutes, faded in the 2nd half, but then got his second wind to see us home by the only goal. Burton showed a lot more than he has in the last 4 games, which was class. Nelson pulled out 2 excellent save early on and was rightly made a fuss of by MA at the end of the match.

Walsall were always in with a shout and Merson showed he still has the class of his earlier years. For a man who has abused his body so much over the years, he was remarkably fit. One or two sat warming our bench this afternoon take note.

Now the ref: Unique decision to book Merson when he was clearly brought down by Sodje, then he paired this ace with another when ignoring penalty appeals after Rhodes was brought down. The Walsall #2 was dying to get himself sent off but the ref couldn't bring himself to do it. The charge on Rhodes was malicious and could have caused serious damage - I hope it hasn't. Later, when Walsall had a corner, Tabb was trying to mark said #2, who promptly poked Tabb in the face with both hands. You may have seen Tabb holding his face for a few seconds - well that was why. After that, #2 decide to elbow Ben May, though not to the Blissett / Uzzell standard. Finally, to show us what a clever man he is, #2 applauded with no grace the home fans as he left the field. Congratulations son, you've won AR$EHOLE OF THE YEAR 2005, and it's only 3rd January.

The #2 McShane was VERY lucky to stay on the pitch IMHO. He seemed to get more lives than the average cat.

Walsall were pants - possibly the worst side to visit GP this season IMHO.

To me Merson looked lardy and didnt do a lot. He couldn`t mix it physically with Hargreaves and Hutch when it mattered, and his attempted con-job with the Sodje incident was the one thing the appalling ref got right!

Thought all our team did okay and I hope we can take some confidence into the Luton game. We have nothing to fear there and I fancy us to turn them over and land a juicy 4th round tie  :sorted:

Thought Burton was also outstanding too.

Only performance disapointment was Jay Tabb again, I so badly want him to do well but he is well under par..

Thought the Goldrange Steward was worth a mention too...what was he doing waiting for the 'racism card' to show to Dangerous?
Probably waiting all night then as Dangerous's background suggests otherwise!

Except .... I was amazed that he was taking free kicks with both right and left foot in the second half. I can't recall a single player ever doing that except perhaps Trevor Brooking (and I include your Beckhams, Bowles, Hoddles etc.)

The man has a rare talent that we're lucky to have down at GP. Match day is always more pleasureable when he's in the team because he such an intelligent footballer to watch.

Yes I was amazed to see that simply because it is so rare, soon after Hargreaves muffed a right footed shot and I thought if only he had two feet like Tabby...

One factor that shoen through was the lack of claridge factor. We played better because he did not play. One might think that maybe he has been a disruptive influence at dressing room level?
Walsall must have been the most overweight team that I have seen at this level
Jamie Lawrence does give 100% but he does not have the ability to play at this level anymore. One would suggest that he would be better off playing for a conference team where he would get 2-3 years more playing.

The #2 McShane was VERY lucky to stay on the pitch IMHO. He seemed to get more lives than the average cat.

I was surprised to read in the programme that he is on loan from Man Utd and is ex-Rangers - then I thought "that figures"! ;)

Nice!

Agree with all of this. I suppose that Rankin had to start as reward for his brace against AFCB.

With the exception of the doofy Lawrence in for King Kev, I think that was the strongest Bees 11 I've witnessed for some time.

Made me chuckle - from the BBC: "Both goalkeepers were busy as Walsall's Joe Murphy denied Andy Frampton, and Stuart Nelson thwarted Jay Tabb."

In case anyone wasn't there: that isn't a misprint lol

Credit when credit's due..I have slated Nelson lately but he was outstanding today. Fantastic bit of Man Management when MA Paraded him to the fans at the end..Sheer Class.

Nelsn? Burton? NO Dangerous gets my Man of the Match award!!

First off I am not a rasicst and there was no rasicsm said,I shouted over to Chapman when he was filming and said. is it not about time to get rid of the goldrange lot as they are just so crap at what they do. I think the steward thought I was been rasicst but I can assure you I was not and that steward was doing his upmost best for me to whack him as his eyes was so scary not but I kept cool and just laughed at him and told him I knew his game and that I am not going to do anything even though he wanted me to.
I understand that a steward collects £50 if hit so I persume he was skint and needed some money after xmax.
