Overnight coach journey
The Furnace arms pub
The F. A. cup win …1-0 ? (I think )
And losing 0- 3 …last game of the season, a Saturday ,did a few miles that week having travelled to Barrow on the Monday ! ( both by supporters coach ) .
Workington football,rugby and speedway stadiums or grounds being really close together

I got the arse with some of the comments on the original tweet. Stuff like, “Premier league fans are the prawn sandwich brigade and wouldn’t understand”,

When you’ve done Wrexham on a Tuesday night in the pissing rain, and forked out in a hotel for Accrington away, only to have the game called off at 2pm…. You definitely understand.

It’s a lovely photo and a great reminder of what was, and what could still be again, one day. There but for the grace of MB, go I.

I am so glad you said about the overnight coach journey. I sometimes thought I was imagining it. I was a young lad and my brother took me along with his mates. I did not do the Barrow one as well so you have my total respect.

I remember Johnnym standing on the Ealing Road terrace in the peeing rain singing,cheering throughout the game .
For some reason I think it was Hull City 83/84
In Stripes after the game absolutely soaked through and he wasn't alone.
I am sure Legs and Chris was with him.
I was in the paddock being sensible.

Yes we may return to those days that’s why I cannot understand the people who moan about stuff. It’s absolutely brilliant at the moment.

Sure there was a game at Workington in late 60s, possibly a night game, where the Supporters Club hired a minibus for away travel. Got to be worth more TAPs than Barrow away.

That’s it, Tabby went left back and we were stood in that open end in the Hockey stadium and got drenched.
Hairman spent the whole game kicking lumps out of them, presumably knowing the ref wouldn’t send off a second Bees player

I've been watching since the mid 60's...traveled to over 80 grounds...most now either defunct or non League...Bradford PA..Chester...Chesterfield...Workington...Hereford....York City....Newport Wimbledon....Halifax....Accrington...Mansfield...Blackpool...Plymouth...Darlington...Doncaster....Bury..Oxford....Wrexham...Cambridge...Torquay...Burton...Southport..Stockport....Northampton....Southend...Barnet....Oldham....Yeovil....Scunthorpe.....Peterborough...Exeter ...Plymouth....Shrewsbury...Grimsby...Luton...Darlington...Rochdale...Lincoln...To name a few off the top of my head....Can't believe we're in the Premier league now....absolutely brilliant

That's right, I remember them doing that. Fortunately, having looked at the forecast, I was wearing a full-length drover's raincoat and hat. I was probably the only dry Bees fan there, that day.

It certainly poured with rain during the Hull City match in October '83. It was a 1-1 draw a few days after the Liverpool Milk Cup tie, but in front of a somewhat smaller crowd...

Yes remember it well for some reason , Joe scored for us and Hull got a late equaliser . My Uncle was up from Weymouth and I remember him raving about FJ , saying you won’t hang on to him for long . Funny what sticks in your mind .

Social services would have had a field day with this, but I did three of these trips, Workington in 65/66 when I would have been 9-10 years old and Barrow (no stub !) and Sunderland (FA Cup) the following season, when I would have been 10-11 yo, with no adult supervision (seems incredible now) just me and a school friend (same age).

Think we only missed one game that season as Primary school kids, with no parents interested!

There were always several older women on the coaches who used to keep an eye out for us and supply snacks.

I don't remember a lot about the days, I think the coaches left at 22:30 Friday and got back at 08:30 Sunday something like that, with a huge amount of drinking time for the adults on arrival and before departure. I do recall playing football on the Roker Park forecourt in the morning .

Absolutely no idea what we, as kids, did for all those hours either side of the game, probably got up to some mischief, but on match days at Griffin Park we used to hang out from 12:00 until about 18:00 so we were used to it !

Aha another one who arrived ridiculously early at GP. We used to get to the ground by about 12. My late elder brother used to bring me on the crossbar of his racing bike all the way from Greenford. I could hardly walk when we got there! He was under drinking age so we would go to the shop on the corner behind the Royal Oak then go on the railway bridge with his mates to watch the trains whilst eating a selection of penny chews (black jacks, flying saucers, fruit salads, milk bottles etc.) This was all funded by the money my Mum had given my brother for my entrance money. I therefore had the ignominious task of either taking the 2 through on one click routine at the turnstile or worse crawling through his legs under the turnstile. Only caught once and the chap let me off , but not before frog marching tearful me to the gate threatening to eject me. I nearly wet myself hahahaha

One of my friends got so plastered in the bees club before the coach (s) left that they wouldn’t allow him on .
And I believe that it was the same bloke missed the whole game at Workington because he drank a little (lot) too much in the Furnace arms before the game .The good people at Workington allowed him to sleep it off in a supporters hut
Fortunately no police anywhere!!! …no police in sight at Newport eitherwhere he again got plastered and was calling out to Pat Terry ( a very risky thing to do !) outside the ground before the game ! No sleeping accommodation this time though . I do remember sitting with him on a grass bank outside the ground though

Wouldn’t have been the hull game (2-1 us) as their mob was in Ealing rd and they tried to get in enclosure during the game but got battered out so I doubt if you were being sensible either !!! ????

I have done about 12 of those mainly in my youff.
Mates dad was a bus driver and would do mid week aways in his free time Mansfield i remember specifically. If you owned a blue Peugeot 504 estate in the early 80s thanks.

I did the reverse game there when miners strike was at it’s peak in 84…lost 2-0 and weirdly the weather was mild and sunny when we left kings x station and was snowing and freezing when we got to hull…was an awful day out to be fair ??

Snowed during that game and the players were running around to keep warm as someone was getting treatment. Got the train to Boothferry Park Halt. Long gone now.

Lol! Yeah remember that one. Took my brother in law (well he was then!) he is from MK. He was very impressed with our support, and still follows us now. Not that I see him anymore. Families!

We were there that day.
We had tickets from Chris Kamara so were in the posh seats.
Walked in to their pub and Johnny M shouts who wants it then?
They all looked round and he said only joking 3 pints of lager please mate.???

Terrible game but a great turnout…was lively in city centre after and at Gloucester station with London Irish fans ??
