There are numerous threads on the match yesterday and on individual players, but may I start one to corral in all of that, and consider what we do now. The mods may consider this duplicate and delete it, but I think there are now some big questions to answer as to how we should now move forward. We are safe in terms of league survival - mid-table obscurity beckons. We as a club must now focus on next season.

I would therefore make the following points for consideration.

NF - should he stay or should he go? He has done well, but maybe we need a bit more experience there. Easy to ask for but much harder to find. Stay with Nicky and hope (it might work, you never know) or go for an experienced head. A Gary Johnson type, though maybe not specifically him.

Players. Who to keep and who to release. Recent games, not just y/day, have seen some shine and raised big question marks over others. Maybe time to kill a few sacred cows? Discuss.

Loan players. This was i think our biggest weakness yesterday, in terms of both the contractual conditions surrounding loanees, and also on just how well we can gel as a team with so many new faces.

That's it! It could be an interesting summer. Above all, whatever needs to be done, needs to be done quickly. We have the relative comfort of knowing we will not go down - and a big thank you to NF in particular for that - so we should make sure we move quickly to get the pick of the crop. Please dont wait until the beginning of August before we make any changes. Over to you.....

GARY JOHNSON !!!............take a look at where Northampton are in league 2 ? , I think he's lost 5 in a row ?

Give the job to Nicky and a budget the same as Scott ( blew) and see where we go from there.
A couple of weeks ago everyone was saying we need your premier league starlets, we've got 2 and you're still not happy !

Very true, but as i said, we can now focus on 2011/12. Up until y/day, all attention was rightly on the game at Wembley, but now, we much look forward. We are safe in the league, and like any good business, we must plan for the longer term as well as tactically manage the short-term future.

One game at a time! What's next is to focus on Swindon; they will come for a 0-0, the players need to respond by giving them a tonking.

Forster/Warburton showed real inexperience and wild over-optimism with the team selection yesterday. Many of the players, if playing together to a coherent plan, will be good enough for a promotion challenge next season. Four new forwards are required, plus new wingers on each side... that's all!

"Real inexperience"? How many would have disputed the team selection before the start? Those selected had done well in preceding games so it wasn't unrealistic to hope for or expect more of the same. Forster saw it wasn't working and made the correct change at half time. It's pretty obvious we need more of a goal threat in the future, and I think Forster is in as good a position as any other potential manager to rectify that situation.

Agree entirely. Many people are lagging off the team selection with the benefit of hindsight - if you re-look at the GPG thread on team for Wembley you will notice a big support for pretty well the team that was put out yesterday.

Agreed. The game was perfect for Reed in theory.

erm...I left out Weston and Alexander on mine and to me they were the biggest poo poos of a poo day.
The fact that there are so many differing opinions on who starts and who doesn't shows that this football team picking lark is very hard and a bit mental. The only positive I can take from yesterday is that IMO peeps were going over the top last week in suggesting we are close to being very good, I thought that a few showed yesterday that they aren't good enough. Let's hope that yesterday's let down becomes the catalyst for change and next year's promotion push.

I agree, looks a great prospect and Wembley looked made for him by offering him a bit more time and space. Perhaps he is better in the thick of it as that wasn't his true showing.

0-0 is no good for them, they need to try and win every game between now and may 7th or there down

What next?

I think they'll come for 0-0 and try to nick a goal; they're not going to be gung-ho, their plan A will be "don't concede". It will make them defend deep and be difficult to break down.

A good reason to play Grabban and Shlupp up front then ?

Errrrrm, I think Swindon will be playing for all 3 points.
They need to win.

Exactly, I dont think they have won in something like 18 games?
They are fighting for their lives, they need all 3.
This will be a very tough game

Spillane should get a decent run at full back in the next 7 games. He is contracted next season and we need to find out if a consisten run might turn him into a RB version of Dickson. Pim & Wood possibly getting some time at LB as Woodman looks completely knackered of late.
Give Schlupp, Grabban & Bignall some decent macth time also. We have thme for the season and we may find out they too could be useful or not for next.

We lost one game, FACT. Our season ain't over. We have got 7 league games starting with Swindon to catch MK Dons or Bournmouth. we can do it, it is difficult but possible, maybe 6 wins out of the next 7 or 5 wins and two draws. If we had to loose just one game yesterdays was probably the best to loose. Defeat to Southampton made Carlisle stronger and our defeat could serve us well at Old Trafford in the Play Off final.

As someone else has said, Hindsight is a wonderful thing. As I took my seat I thought Bean should have started but by the time it kicked off in fairness thought the wide open spaces would suit Reed and his passing better...well I was wrong but understood the decision. The fact is that yet another Brentford team has underperformed on the big day, I've witnessed it 5 times in a major Wembley or Cardiff final and on at least a half dozen more occasions in key promotion or relegation games...............let's not blame a rookie manager.

I still want him to have a an old hand to support and that hasn't changed since the day he took caretaker role but he cannot kick the ball for them! We seemed to set up well in the second half but failed to deliver a decent ball into the box and couldn't hit the target for shots outside the box. Possession wise we dominated after the break and any threat they managed was largely down to unforced errors on our part, Neilsen and Legge calamitous clearannces spring to mind.

Too many players let them get their nerves get the better of them and they froze, annoying yes, end of the world, no, if they learn and conquer and are better prepared for a re run next year in the play offs I'll take some consolation.

Well I'm still interested in the rest of this season, a late run at a play off spot could prove very exciting. Come on Nicky and Come on you Bees. We weren't disgraced yesterday, the better team won on the day, let's turn our lemons into lemonade and have some fun for the rest of the season. :)

What next?

A new manager to take us forward with the backing of a benefactor. We need better. On and off the pitch. A big decision coming soon........

If someone puts circa £10 mill into the club and asks for his loans to be repaid in shares only is a benefactor in my eyes

Let's focus on one game at a time, we did not win yesterday we can not change that but let's get fired up for Swindon. Let's get back on the winning track and really focus on a late push for the play offs. It's one game at a time, we have been to Wembley this season now let's focus on getting to Old Trafford

totally agree with you . i would of started the same team as forster chose

They'll have to come for more than a 0-0 if they don't want to be playing L2 footy next season.

Why do we need a Manager....................can you name anyone who could have done as well as NF with players who he didn't choose. Hopefully he will be with us as the Manager next season , think you will see a few new faces who can play the type of football he wants us to play;)

What next?

Will be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks, The management have done well with what they have at their disposal but we all knew in outr hearts that the available players are not good enough by and large to take us to a new level and that recently they have exceeded expectations in the results but Sunday proved a game to far.

There will, in my opinion, need to be a number of changes over the Summer unfortunately some of teh contracts mean that we are stuck with a number of players unless the management are able to off load them and that will probably not be an easy task.

The keepers are both good and Karleigh and leon should both be ok next season and hopefully improving further, Pim has been a dissapointment this season but we know he has class and it just needs a manager to get the best out of him. Woodman has been consistant all season although latterley the fact he has played pretty much every game is begining to show.

Midfield I beleive Saunders can be utilised to create and Marcus has been a revelation recently, Dave shows some class touches but if we are to be a force to be reckoned with then I fear that we need more, possibly a Paul Evans equivalent to drive teh midfield on. Weston is an enigma, has touches of brilliance but has faded considerably as teh season has gone on, can a manager get more consistancy from him or do we have to accept that whilst fine to have flashes of brilliance we need more.

Aleaxander abd Cahrlie have worked hard but neither in my opinion will take us to the next level, Aleaxander is, due to lack of pace, looking like a 4th division forward and Charlie has flattered to deceive over the season, yes has got goals but not enough if we are to be the real deal.

I think that Granbban has shown that he is worth another year providing we can get another forward to play off him, Charlie has another year I beleive and perhaps after a long lay off he might just suprise us all but probably not.

Feel the following are perhaps likeley to be off loaded or put on transfer list

Alexander
McDonald
Weston
Bean
Spillaine
Wood
Hudson

Of those would be sad to see Wood, Bean and Spillaine leave however Wood and Bean are I think at the correct level for them and Spillaine seems out of favour.

Loanees would be nice to get season long loans for Reed and Schloop although would prefer us to get our own players, see no point in retaining any of the others although I do beleive Byrne will ultimatley do well but probably not Premiership.

The youngsters such as Bush and Blake I really cannot comment on as not seen them play.

Under the previous Management we aquired players that would fit into a rigid system, we are now seeing that there is more to football than tthe one dimensional kick and hope and as such it is imperative that the Manager ( whoever that might be) finds players that are comfortable on the ball and have a bit of guile about them.

Possibly the most important role to be filled is Captain, I am afraid that since Evans and Jones before him we have not had a dynamic captian capable of driving his teammates and giving b***ockings when necessary, our players are all fairly quiet and unassuming and as such I beleive that we need to bring in a player who can not only play regularly but who also can be the captaon corageous that any succesful team needs.

Sunday showed what lack of leadership does and I have no doubt that someone like Evans or Jones would have been firing up the team ( I know Evans failed at Cardiff but you get my drift)

This is a very important Summer for the club where correct decisions need to be made regarding both management and team, some hard decisions will need to be made which will not meet universal agreement however if we are to have ambition then unfortunately a root and branch change to the team is required....... I hope Uncle Mathew has deep pockets!!!

You can add Woodman to the list of transfers too, he's a poor full back and can't hack it at this level as a defender, has the occasional good delivery but if thats what we want in a defender, there are better out ther than him

load of tosh, have you been to any games this season?
Woodman has played every second of every game apart from one. Hes had no competition all season.
I agree over the past few weeks Woodman has looked really tired and in need of a rest but he is a strong left back who averages at least 7 out of 10 each match!
Whos better than Woodman, can you name me some names who dont cost or are out of contract??

Whats with all the negativity about our players??

It really is purely a question of how far Mr Benham wants to take us. Let's remember that we are in a far better place now than we would have been without him.

I think it is totally unfair to blame the team selection.Over the last few weeks the 11 selected have generally out shone the others.
Imo the more experienced players let the team down Osborne,Woodman and Dave were shocking and Weston needs a lesson in crossing and not blindly running down the line each time being out smarted by the full back.
NF in the absense of Allen is the only realistic choice for us.Lets get behind him and stop all the ridiculous speculation that a top manager is waiting for the call.

I think it's because of posts like this that GPGers remain tentative to have a proper discussion about which players need to be offloaded. There will be changes to the squad in the summer, like it or not. And not everyone will agree with the players that NF sends packing. But it's real and I think that speculation about the future shape of the team is inevitable, or at least should be inevitable. And if it leads to an improvement of the squad, you can barely describe such discussion as negativity.

My only reservation it must be said about such talk is we still have a mathematical chance of reaching the play-offs (though we know how that would end up), and therefore as things stand the squad is crucial to that.

If you look back, I (and some others) pointed out that we've not played well with both Saunders and Weston in the same starting XI; Hartlepool away, for example. To start with both AND Reed was over-optimistic and naive, not a ball-winner between them. Was it any wonder that Dave was over-run? Weston couldn't beat their RB in the GP game, we all knew that. No-one had a good game but the selection didn't help.

There will be other realistic choices; Martin Allen is not one of those if we want flowing football.

What next?

When I win more money than Mr Benham has in the lottery (next week, probably), I shall become the main benefactor and here's what I will do. I will ask Martin Allen very nicely to come and manage. I will ask Nicky Forster if he would be kind enough to serve an apprentiship under Martin, and it's toodle pip to.................

McCracken
O'Connor
Spillane
Grabban
Charlie
Weston
Wright
Neilson
Alexander

and probably several other the fringe players that we haven't seen much of yet. I shall then give Martin several squillion pounds to sign Jeffrey, along with several other players that are good enough to take us up to the next tier. Because none of the above are :sorted:.

Playoffs? Don't make me laugh. Some people just don't know when they're beat :D. Things are going to change around here. You're going to like having me in charge :thetruth:.

Get the management team sorted first at the end of the season and then the playing staff can be sorted properly. No ones going anywhere till thats done and dusted.

Okay. Will do :sorted:.

What next?

My feeling is we may well turn to a more youthful squad next season either by loanees or our own. The youth set up is not being beefed up for nothing but will take several years to really produce the goods so I can see more Reid and Byrne type signings and a more passing style of play. I don't get the feeling MB is investing in our club to be a last home for old pros, the likes of MA and one dimensional football.

I would be surprised if NF does not get the job next season but the next few games may seal it one way or another. Sunday was a bad day at the office for the management team and they lost a bit of shine off what has been a pretty rosy time so far. They will need to get something back on Saturday and beyond to be sure of being here come July.

It would be nice to keep the season going rather than fade out quickly if only for the bank balance and to build on that magnificant support at Wembley.
