Why do ITV bother?

BBC: 11.2m, rising to 17m
ITV: 2.5m, rising to 3.5m lol

Their commentary is sh*t, their pundits can't pund, and I can never read the numbers properly on their on-screen graphics.

Why didn't they put on a film instead? I'm sure something like The Remains of the Day would have attracted more than 3.5m women / gays etc.

I got so fed up with camp Lawro and boring Motty that Clive Tyldesly and David Pleat came as welcome relief.
Usually I never stray from the Beeb but this world cup has made me realise that they're not that fantastic after all.

The problem with Motson and Lawrenson is that they try to be a comedy duo with their commentry .... its not wanted and they are not very good at it

I would like to see Mike Ingham from 5 live switch to the TV .. as I think he is the best footie commentator around

I agree, that Tydsley and Pleat are good. I've said it on another thred but Pleat is the only one who offers genuine insight to what is going on in the match. He is the only person that I actually 'learn' things fro during a atch and who mentions things I hadnt realised.

i also thing as well as Ingham that Jonathan Pearce (now that he has calmed down) is quite good, and he has a very good knowledge of lower league football as opposed to the idiot Alan Green.

PS I dont know if I've mentioned it before but Peter Drury is a complete and utter p r i c k

Luckily I missed both, my commentary was in German - standing in the Fan Mile in Berlin.

Mr. Livingston take note, that's how to put on a big screen event and do it properly. Nicely organised, lot's of police although only as a presence really, everything under control and even the German team popping down for a visit in the morning.

I also switched away from Motson to Radio 5 Live. How that man has become "Motty the commentating legend" on the back of regurgitating a never-ending list of stiflingly boring facts I will never know. He's not fit to lace Barry Davies headphone wires.
One thing I do know is that I will make sure I am out of the country when Motty retires, the thought of all those nauseating tributes send shivers down my spine.

Ingham on Radio 5 was quality, the only downside was expert comments from...Graham Taylor, who has no right to provide expert summaries at a World Cup, being as he couldn't even qualify for one. Having said that in comparison to Terry Butcher, Graham Taylor is a footballing visionary & a silver-tongued genius.

BBC with 5Live commentary for me, except for the penalties where the radio is slightly ahead.

I like Ingham and Green, you don't always agree with them but at least it's not banal.

BBC have had the better of this WC IMHO because of their pundits. Apart from Ian Wright, yes we know Sven didn't pick your son get over it, and perhaps Desailly the rest were very good. ITV had Venables and then usually cut him off for adverts.

Commentators are much of a muchness, Tyldsley and Motson are crap, Steve Wilson is pretty good and Jonathan Pearce is ok. Pleat the best TV pundit, why the BBC went with Lawrenson and Mark Bright I'll never know, perhaps they think most people have digital

I usually wait for Tyldesley to say just before kick off "hold on to your seats..." call him a ****er then turn over, unless its champions league and then I just call him a ****er and watch the game. I hate it when he says that! " expert summaries " from a manager who failed miserably in trying to get England to the 1994 finals and after his famous " sit back and watch us win it " quote for Euro 92 and which saw us getting trounced by all and sundry .. he has no right to be near a microphone

I did at first but the radio 5 was a few seconds in front of the tv which was most irritating.

I too used Radio 5 commentary rather than BBC TV. I found Graham Taylor quite interesting to listen to. After the match I switched over to ITV1 as the missus wanted to watch Poirot and they had Ruud Gullit and Terry Venables and Steve Rider and I was quite impressed as they were better than the Beebs studio.

Of course the best person was on BBC TV, sometimes in studio, sometimes outside ... his name was Leonardo ...

ITV was much better for me. BBC was so biased towards England it became a joke. During the France v Portugal game Shearer said something like only 4 players from the 4 semi finalists would get in the England team!! That goes against the opinion of every other pundit who has subsequently picked their team of the tournament. I wonder did he actually watch many non-England games or ones he wasn't working on? All logical evidence pointed to the fact that in fact England were not very good.

As for Hansen he is the most overrated pundit in history. He consistently calls things wrong and doesn't get challenged about it. He takes the old "Never explain, never apologise" mantra to new extremes.

His "You'll never win anything with kids" is famous but in this World Cup almost all his predictions proved wrong (Argentina and Brazil were both nominated as winners along the way). In the Telegraph yesterday he came out with the ridiculous statement that if you asked football fans around the world to pick the best WC squad between England, France and Italy 95% of them would go for England. I think that is plainly ridiculus after the last month or so.

Some of the most informative and interesting coverae was actually on Eursport's WC report. I never really watch Eurosport but I found their stats, graphics and pundits actually showed you how the game had played out and who had performed well. Listening to the BBC was like listening to a few old boys in the pub whose football knowledge begins and ends with The Premiership.

Yep, I remember that one.....

All virtually as bad as each other, particularly had to laugh every time Venables was in the box with Ruud Hullit ( spelling..sorry ?) He never let Ruud get a word in edgeways and he was getting really frustrated. If Terry V had pulled his trousers up any further as well, they would have been over his knees, showing even more of his fake tan!

Like Gary Linekar, love Ian Wright, if only for his passion for the game.
Overall I actually quite liked Gareth Southgates commentary.

Sure he has! Villa believe it or not regularly competed in the Uefa Cup (Ron Atkinson era) and I'm sure thats when he was there.
