Why is it?

Am still revelling in the best win in BFC's history, just days after going out to the club in 90th place in the league cup.

Today, we had 8 shots on target against a side who barely concede at home. We defended like lions against probably the best attacking side against world football, with their best XI on the pitch. Despite that, we had more shots on target than them and if we'd scored four, it wouldn't have been lucky. It was no smash and grab and we deserved it.

But it was also an away performance leagues above anything else produced this season. And we did it with a number of players injured (regularly used as a reason why we're underperforming) and players who has often this season appeared well below the standard expected (Onyeka, Janelt, Roerslev, Da Silva).

So my question is : Why is it that the side picked today can be that good, yet what we saw at Villa Park and St. James's Park can be so shambolic? It clearly isn't injuries, a lack of squad depth or a lack of quality.

Is it Thomas trying to fiddle around with formations just a bit too much in games? Is it a lack of confidence or the wrong mentality? Is it poor concentration? It's clearly a lack of consistency, but why?

My only logical answer is, "It's Brentford, innit!'

Goals change games, simples. We score first we are brilliant in a low block defence and playing on break.

Why is it?

It's attitude isn't it. We were well up for it today, we clearly weren't for Villa or Newcastle.

As good as we were, I also think a lot of the Man City players had an off day too (which helped).

We have traditionally over the past 18 months found another level for the "top 6" teams so maybe i'm not as shocked as others are at todays result.

Why is it?

The old brain game I reckon .

we all do it as humans whatever job you do , Raise your game against the best and get complacent against lesser mortals

Why is it?

Why is it the England rugby league team can beat a team 60-6 three weeks ago yet are losing 20-12 to the same team with twenty minutes to go today

The same reason that some days you wake and have a great day and some days are utter gash.

Why is it?

It's probably why we all love football so much. It is unpredictable, there are just so many variables and the reason no one won the football pools !
Lose to Gillingham one day.......win away at Man City 4 days later ! OMG how I love writing that last bit :hat::):):):):)

What a bloody game by the way!!!!!!!

Why is it?

Inconsistency. If you’re slightly off the pace at this level you get found out. We seem to be able to up our game for the bjg matches (Man U, Chelsea, Man C) but can’t sustain that level week in week out. Also playing without possession is hard work. If we were to play on Tuesday night I suspect we wouldn’t hit anywhere near the same level as today.

Why is it?

City only play one way, relying on the quality of their players to win games. That means Thomas could set up with very specific instructions for each role and every player. Every player stayed focused and delivered.

By that logic, more teams should take points from them then? Unless you're saying too many of their lot were off their game?

How long have you been watching football?
A week?
Freaky results are commonplace and happen all the time.
Today was our turn.

There was a quote in the book ‘The numbers game’ (which I think had its own thread on GPG) referring to football being one of the few sports where the underdog always has a genuine chance of winning (no wonder I rarely win in the fixed odds now?). The book referred to handball and basketball as sports the other end of the spectrum where the underdog very rarely wins.

Why is it?

Manchester City learnt a lesson today that they won't forget next time. And that is, if you're 1-1 with Brentford 5 minutes into stoppage time, aim for the corner flag. Because we're right dangerous bastards. :)

That's the first time we've countered so well since the Man U game I think?

Very strange, I have heard that before, " Many were off their game". It seems that whenever we put in a good performance the other team were not at their best, or it was a freaky performance.

Well, they were but we were v good. Same with Man U game and Chelsea. On the flip side Arsenal were at it and we weren't in the game at all.. To get anything from these games you do need them to be a little off. Not taking anything away from us as we were superb but that's the reality.

I'm saying that Thomas created a plan and that the players executed it almost perfectly. If other coaches and teams can do that, they may get the same result. The City players were all a bit off, this may've been "only Brentford", it may've been thinking of the World Cup but they way we started and got at them was also a contributory factor.

Why is it?

A friend made an interesting comment to me this morning that we would be in with a chance, as a lot of Man City players may not want to get too "stuck in" in the final game before the World Cup, and risk missing it.

But I think it's also a case of the team making the extra step up to compete against a top side, and not being complacent. I'm sure everyone would agree of we even had half of this level on Tuesday night we wouldn't have lost to Gillingham.

EDIT: also didn't Pep only make one sub? City play a particular style, and just basically change the personnel for it (in my not so tactical eyes). Whereas TF is known to change both personnel and style within a game of required. Maybe Pep didn't make more subs as he knew it wouldn't make a difference, as their usual style wasn't working it's usual magic on us?

Why is it?

We played in red and white at the Etihad (and at Stamford Bridge last season).
We didn't play in red and white at Villa or Newcastle.
End of.

I know we won at West Ham in an away strip, but that yellow kit was miles better than this year's second and third strip.

Why is it?

Newcastle was self-inflicted cock ups at key moments which completely derailed us.. we werent't playing that badly on the whole till later on. Bad day at the office. If you make a cock up at a place like this you get 50K people making it clear to you.

Villa we were on the back foot from the word go and never gave ourselves a chance to get a foothold. No ben mee was a big mistake too as we had no-one to get us organised properly . Wrong team and approach.

Gillingham was just complacency

After all, it's a team game, and we played like a team with one thing on our mind. We were going to put things right, and bloody well win this game against all the odds.

And it's what makes the game so great. We experienced 2 such results in 5 days. One for and one against. Glad we won the City game!

This thread is just a mish-mash. Start again if there's a particular to to discuss. And choose an appropriate thread title!
