Not sure if this has already been done, but apparently they are on the verge of having their ground closed down due to an outstanding Police bill. Can anyone put a link on here???

The BBC cover the basics here

They seem to be in a very unfortunate position and I hope they manage to put one over on the police. A Wigan fan on 6-0-6 at the weekend said the decision over policing costs is due to different match commanding officers covering Wigan and other teams in the Manchester area. Essentially one officer is responsible for the number of police employed at Wigan.

They may as well play behind closed doors anyway. It'd save them the bother of fans. The fans would get their saturday back to watch ManU on the telly as well. I hope the police continue to make life hard for them. :) I suggest a policy of upping the fees based on how miserable the town seems that particular day and a commission bonus each time they batter a home fan into hospital.

Heard an interview on the radio with a rep. from Greater Manchester Police, and what an arrogant sod he came across as. At last week's Leeds game they charged Wigan 43,000 GBP for policing  Down the road at Preston on the same day policing costs were 7k GBP. Ok, it's Leeds and so there's some lunatics in the crowd, but still!

not quite.... quotes Preston cost vs Leeds..

The multi-millionaire claimed Wigan had to pay £44,000 to police their home match against Leeds whilst Preston were charged £7,700 for the visit of Kevin Blackwell's side.

Yikes, I misunderstood him at the time. This definitely throws my sympathy to Wigan!

BBC reports that a compromise has been reached (no details)

Looks like Whelan has agreed to put funds matching the outstanding sum into a separate bank account while this is contested legally. He will pay the going rate for the remaining home games this season though.

Some Wigan fans want to protest against the police. They suggest dressing up as policemen to do this, complete with the silly Bobby-type hats you can buy at seaside resorts. As one says "Can you picture a conga of coppers along the stands!"

Wigan

The wigan chairman suggested putting all funds owed to the police into a seperate account until after an enquiry, if the police are correct in there charging they get the funds if not it's returned to the club...maybe a revised amount maybe then paid?!

or as above  ;)

I have difficulty getting my head round the whole issue. We pay for the police through taxation, it seems we will now have to pay again for a public service through ticket prices.

Why pick on football, are the police going to charge for every public event? Do they charge for policing demonstrations, other sporting events etc??

The police charge for their services on private land - Griffin Park is such. Other sports are charged but for rugby, etc, the cost is smaller due to less potential disorder.

However, at Brentford this season, there should be no need for officers inside the stadium except for a handful of clubs that visit GP (Nottm Forest, etc)...

But there was need for police for the first home game after Tranmere last season. I wonder why we had to incur that expense?
