World Cup Build Up - TV Programmes

A bit like Christmas, I now find myself enjoying the build up to the World Cup as much, if not more than the tournament itself.
I'm looking forward to the documentaries, retrospectives, reviews of old World Cup songs, etc. that they inevitably show on ITV, E4, Dave and the rest.
So if anyone spots re-runs of anything like "One Night in Turin", "Worst Ever England XI" or similar stuff, could they post here please?

Worst ever England team. Must include Carlton Palmer surely?

I wonder if a channel will do the look back at previous finals as they did four years ago? They were great viewing, especially the early ones from the 30’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. After 1978, it changed....... :)

Never really looked forward to a WC less than this one....

Stewart Downing made into that team.

I signed Stewart Downing one season in my fantasy league team and by April he had a managed the amazing feat of no goals and no assists, despite playing virtually every game. I just couldnt bring myself to sell him as I thought he was going to suddenly have "one of those games"

Wallchart secured today via When Saturday Comes.....ice retro feel to it. :sorted:
Already assumed it’s traditional place in the kitchen (where do you put yours?) where it will be religiously filled in........right up until England get knocked out, when it will get left uncared for, for a few days, before being ceremoniously destroyed well before the end of the tournament.....

I was at Wembley last sunday and there are plaques near the Bobby Moore statue listing first caps of England players. These included Matt Jarvis, Seth Johnson, Gabby Agbonlahor and a lot of dross. I don't support England but they have the front players to compete in Russia. Shame about the keepers, defence, and midfield though.

Worst eleven? Sorry, but Geoff Thomas. Witnessed that spectacular chip against France at Wembley first hand.

We were very lucky to get away with 2-0 that night. If I recall Paul Walsh played as well?
Carlton Palmer should never have got a sniff of a cap, David Nugent, Jake Livermore, Ricketts(Bolton), Gavin McCann, Alan Thompson and Harry the Donkey all unfit to wear the shirt.

I was right behind the goal as Geoff took aim, when the ball mysteriously vanished from my line of vision.

Wrong about big Harry! :fishing: Keep telling you. ;)

The programmes on History channel about the WC are shaping up to be very good based on what I've seen so far.

Yep return to Turin : Italia '90 was very decent. A few stories I hadn't heard before, interviews with Toto Schallachi and Roger Milla, honest accounts from the England players involved (mainly Lineker, Parker and Butcher) and enough coverage of the key moments. Could have done with being a little bit longer and if you're being picky it was a pity they weren't able to use the original BBC comms from Motson and Davies.

It's repeated a couple of times tomorrow and probably in the next few days. Also just noticed they a showing One night in Turin tomorrow at 7pm too which is not new but I remember seeing it and really enjoying it.

he was a very good player i'll have you know :nono: and that would have been a bloody sexy goal, but yes, unavoidably true that he got a bit over-excited!

He was a very good player for Crystal Palace. That's as far as it went I'm afraid.

Would like a decent wall chart and mag about 2018 world cup teams. Any recommendations? A few WC's ago The Observer used to produce an excellent guide, but then tried to be funny. When I want funny I'll watch Steptoe or Laurel and Hardy!

.

Nah, anything sounds better without those two IMO. Motson with his fake horror and surprise at everything that goes on goes right through me "oh, and Stirling is going to take a cooorrrnneeeerrrrr" as if it is the worlds biggest surprise.

History channel has been great. Hadn’t seen One Night in Turin before but that was brilliant. Watched Pele, Argentina and the Regime (or something like that) as well which was very interesting.

If you don't mind Frankie Boyle, then 'Frankie Goes to Russia' on BBC2 is a decent watch.

Thank you for that. Good mag, but a little under whelmed by the World Cup Guide. Mostly about songs and who will be presenting on tv. Lots of words but little of interest to me. One of the reasons I asked. I do like to buy a World Cup mag, but now they are all bagged, so I have to rely on what others recommend.

This month's World Soccer is tremendous; every team reviewed with 4 pages dedicated to each team.

I've bought every magazine so far and it wins hands down.

Tomorrow; Racing Post release their WC betting guide
Saturday - Times will have a 64 page guide

i was going to say World Soccer's always got it covered, although not bought it myself

as for wallchart, we ordered this for our office: http://www.quinkyart.com/p/world-cup-2018-wall-chart.html - i mean, it's not like it's AMAZING or anything, but all for a good cause (treating the poor people of Luton and Dunstable of their ailments, i believe)

That was marvellous, the Scottish fans singing “We want our money back” after that Peru game and the BBC playing “Sorry seems to the hardest word” on the end titles with footage of Ally McLeod sat looking bewildered and clueless on the bench during the game. Fantastic TV and so much more enjoyable than suffering “We’re on the March we’re Ally’s army” on TOTP the week before and those crappy Chrysler ads with the players in those horrible motors.

1978 was such a great tournament and season as Bees were promoted. Always remember opening game 78/79 at Blackpool and the ticker tape reception from 500 Bees fans.
Used to have a photo of that. Maybe Hungerford Bee still has a copy! Great pic!

Just finished watching One Night In Turin and found myself welling up at the end.

Some great memories though, and a few things really stood out.... Firstly, was the bond between the England players - regularly sat around the pool, sharing beers, laughs etc. Just like a bunch of mates would. I know they wouldn't be allowed to drink now but you wonder how much of that team building/bonding goes on these days?

I'd forgotten Waddle hitting the inside of the post in the West Germany game - I just leaped off my settee watching that. How the hell did that not go in?
On the subject of Chris Waddle, how negative was his body language in his walk up to take the pen? He was never going to score in a month of Sundays. I also noticed that when he missed and the Germans were celebrating like loons, Lothar Matteus was the first to put his arm around Waddle and talk to him. It was genuine empathy from the German. A class act.
