but inspired by a comment on BBC last night, who's the better right back, Maicon or Daniel Alves... (both Brazilian, cheeky gits, but then we've got Ashley Cole AND Wayne Bridge :thumbs: )

who would you cobble together for your World XI?

I'd have 10 Messi's and Ben Hamer.

so starting at number 1 - a couple of years ago, this would've been easy, as it was generally Cech or Buffon. But Petr's brain fell out, and Buffon's getting on a bit - is Casillas so good as to be "the world's best keeper" :suspect:

thought it was interesting to see comments about Ashley Cole last week, as i thought he'd appeared rejuvenated in the games i've seen. who's better as a left-back :scratch: not a lot of em around...

i'm not comfortable with Rio Ferdinand as "the best centre-back in the world", but his partnership with Vidic is pretty immense

after your back 4, it gets a bit liberal :D
how about Messi-Essien-Gerrard-Ronaldo for a midfield
with Kaka playing off Ibrahimovic up front :confused:

one trouble we have, i guess, is not seeing enough of these players - so some reputations get inflated, and some get pigeon-holed as overrated when they're not (my Italian mates purrrrr over Ibrahimovic but most English people think he's naff)

anyway, no aggressive arguing on MY thread please - genuinely interested in how Lahm makes it :)

I've gone for Lahm on the basis that he's more solid defensively and two footed. The likes of Cole, Evra, Marcelo are great going forward but are prone to howlers now and again and only ever use their right foot for standing on.

I don't watch enough world football to make a genuine attempt at a World XI but when I have seen Lahm play for Germany he looks no more than an average international player.

There are a shortage of really excellent left backs in our top flight - Cole and Evra are the best and both are better than Lahm IMHO.

aye, i agree with WEB - he does a job for the Germans, but i don't think he's all that. he made a howler in the Euro 2008 final too :fishing:

Did you not watch the 2006 World Cup? Lahm was by far the best left back on show, better then than what Cole and Evra are now. I know that was a few years ago and he may have lost some form but I would still have him.

I am familar with your work, and having seen you in a football kit, on a football pitch (I hesitiate to use the phrase "playing football"), I was interested to see you try to "argue with this" :sorted:

I did watch that World Cup and we'll have to agree to disagree. Lahm was a good attacking full back but Grosso was excellent defensively in the Italy team that eventually won it.

I would also argue that Evra now is better than the Lahm I saw in that tournament.

Not bad at all Smiffy. With that XI, I personally would push Alves back to RB and move Ramos across to LB. Play Kaka, Xavi and Pirlo as a midfield three and play Ronaldo and Messi alongside Torres.

Ferdinand has to get in any world 11 and i would have him in front of Puyol. I also think Gerrard should be in so i would go for.
