Worst Awaydays...

Reading at Elm Park on Boxing Day in our title winning year...

Started badly when travel coordinator (not me!) screwed up by not knowing that no trains running...

After much discussion we decided to get a taxi there - only minicab available - a horrible nissan sunny with more rust than bodywork. Somehow all 4 of us managed to clamber inside and after much negotiation as to the fare we began our journey to hell. Then the driver casually mentions picking up his wife to drop her at work 'on the way' - no problem says us without realising that 4 strapping great lads into the back seat of a Nissan just doesnt go (well not without one hell of a squeeze anyway)

Finally arrived at Caravan Central (Reading) - Got very very very drunk on pernod&black (the naivety of youth eh?) in a horrible Irish pub...

then ate 11 (yes eleven!) cheeseburgers at the salmonella ridden van on the terraces...

it was foggy (you couldnt see further than the halfway line)

and then we lost 1-0 to an awful scuf-in from Trevor Bloody Senior...

to top it all off our "driver" who we had booked for the return journey had decided to spend his waiting time in the aforementioned grotty boozer and was virtually incapable of standing let alone walking which led to a very nervous journey back down the M4 to civilisation.......

Not one of my better away days...

Worst Awaydays...

There must be something about Boxing Day games.
My worst has to be Cambridge away 2 season ago. We scored early on then done nothing for the rest of the game, I was so ill I could not touch any drink, and felt so crap by the time we got back to London I missed a party which I probably could have made if I had stayed in bed all day.
Also last Boxing day was no picnic. Swindon=crap town, poor game and I could not wait to get back to London.

Worst Awaydays...

It was Reading at Elm Park a while ago. Cant exaxctly remember when but we lost two one and let in a last minute goal. I remember standing with the Reading fans for some reaosn.
To cap it all, the person I was with had his car keys nicked so we were waiting for well over an hour in a crime ridden estate for the AA!!

Against Cardiff many years ago in the FA cup when we won 2-0.If you think the Cardiff crew are bad now you should have seen them then. It was pouring down with rain & at the end of the game despite a large police presence we still managed to get chased back to the station. Stand & fight for the glory of the bees, not a chance. I think the police dogs were chasing us as well. During the game, where I had managed to get separated from the rest of the Brentford fans a couple of 12 year olds nicked my scarf. Chase them you cry. I did & came within a few yards of running into a trap before realising it would be easier to buy another scarf than fork out for false teeth while still a young man.
Thing is though it was also one of the best days as well. At least it was once we had crossed the bridge to far back into England.
The other one that sticks in my mind was a 2nd replay of the old league cup against Southend who we always seemed to get drawn against. In the days before penalty shoot outs the 2nd relay had to be on neutral ground. The organisers in their wisdom chose Millwall as a neutral ground. I remember little of the game other than we lost but plenty about the bricks raining down on us from the old grassy knoll at the back of the ground being thrown by Millwall supporters. I seem to have a recollection of Brentford & Southend supporters joining forces to fight the common enemy. Anyone else at that game & able to verify what may well be an incident exaggerated by the mists of time.

hasnt most brentford fans worst away day got to be bristol city on the last day of the season when we were relagated in 93? never seen such a gutless performance from brentford considering what was at stake. who was your worst player that day?, could be anyone apart from payton in goal, he must have saved at least five one on ones that day. my vote goes to allan dickens - how was he playing in the first division?

Worst Awaydays...

Cheltenham away this season has to up there with the sh*ttest.

Lost 1-0 to the last header of the game. Missed first 20 minutes due to hopeless turnstiles in away end. Stood on view-less terrace behind some nutter who kept going on about how the non league scum should get off our pitch, whatever that means ;) . Train on way home cancelled so had to go via Gloucester. I don't like Gloucester.

Worst Awaydays...

My worst was Bradford a few years back. Got stuck in some serious traffic on the way Oop North, got lost on my way to the ground and then couldn't find anywhere to park.

Got into the ground at 3:07

Only goal of the game scored at 3:06

That happened to me at Blackpool once. We were two nil up after ten minutes, got in the ground only to see a blackpool goal. Still we won 2-1 so no arguments.

Two bad away games in a week when in the first div. Two nil up away at both barnsley and tranmere only two lose both 3-2. Horrible.....................

Yeah, went to both of those, got totally drenched at Prenton - didn't Blissett miss a penalty as well?

Remember Blackpool in about 1989 - we were bottom of the divn at the time. Went one down after 14 seconds, Bates was sent off, we lost 4 - 0. Got soaked again and found I had a parking ticket when I got back to car. Only highlight was us all picking on some poor sod of a steward who we christened 'Ugly' (cos he was) who eventually lost it, waved two fingers at us all and disappeared.

Same. Yeah Blissett missed a peno when we were either 0-0 or 1-0 up. Pat Nevin scored their winner(?). Gayle scored a cracking volley from a cross that was ruled out as well when it was 0-0.:nono:

Worst Awaydays...

The Barnsley / Tranmere double - urgh

Bristol City 1993 - depressing or what

Cardiff City 1999 - Horrible

Wigan 1992 Friday night - bad at the time

Worst Awaydays...

I was really upset by losing to Leyton Orient 2-1 a few years ago in the 3rd division. Took ages to get there thanks to someone jumping on the train track, had to get bus instead, game was delayed. Folan scores then Brentford decide to go into hiding and try to defend. Lose 2-1 thanks to a complete fool of a ref. He bowed to the crowd i remember, sending us mad. Felt so annoyed!!
Then took 3 hours to get home due to bloody transport.

Also losing 3-2 to Millwall when leading 2-1 in the 87th minute was bad. On boxing day as well.

Worst Awaydays...

Blimey where do you start..........

Several shockers at Cardiff, a simply dreadful performance at Millwall in our relegation season I think and that shambles at Bury last season took some beating.

But tops was Wigan in 1992 , I went on the spur of the moment full of hope as we were looking good in the table, but after that long crawl through Brumscum on a friday night, arriving at that sh*tehole that was Springfield park and then seeing a simply awful performance against a very average side made it a very long journey home.

Worst Awaydays...

Brighton (98), Cambridge (01) and Swindon (02) all on Boxing Day spring to mind. Please let us be at home this season!

Others include:

Cardiff and Mansfield in the division 3 year were both pretty sh*t as well.

Got done for speeding in Bury and then again at Colchester the season after so I was pretty pissed off with those two as well. Although, at least we beat the later!

Worst Awaydays...

Yeah Brighton on Boxing Day at erm....Gillingham has to be up there with any trip to Springfield Park (*who plays there cries daveygaybee) Walsall Sean Sparham was particularly poor as I had to watch from the home end!!! (family :( )

Worst Awaydays...

Play-off at Cardiff last year is the one for me.

Embarassing Bees turnout and a dreadful performance topped with the knowledge that most of the team had played their last game for us.

We finally became a 'small club' that day and it really hurt.

Too many years of apathy and lack of investment at key times have seen our potential support dwindle to 10k for an absolutely massive game.

How many did Bournemouth and Lincoln take to Cardiff? Anyone know?

Worst Awaydays...

Dunno, but there was 32,000 there, so it's probable that they both took more than us. Embarassing.

Worst Awaydays...

how many did the scum take there on sunday is just as bad :(

And yet everybody still seems to think that we need to build a 23 000 capacity stadium.

The sooner we all realise that a top class 15 000 capacity ground - with a bit of cash left to actually buy a team worth turning up to watch - is the day we turn a corner

And once around the corner we're stuck in a 15,000 capacity stadium with a decent team going places but in a stadium not capable of generating enough income to sustain the push, the team falls apart, attendances start dropping, a man with silver hair comes along to rescue the team, we get shafted and the circle is complete.

Off topic anyway :D

Bournemouth sold 17000 tickets. The attendance was around 32000 I think...

Thanks Mark.

17,000 for Bournemouth for the 3rd div playoff. One would also assume that Lincoln had more than 10k as well.

That makes our pathetic turnout last year even more embarassing.

So tell me, for potential support, which clubs do we now compare with? Rochdale?

You're not far off Roy.

The only thing I would say in our favour is that we haven't got the novelty value of appearing at the national stadium anymore.

Wembley '85
Wembley '96
Millenium '01
Millenium '02

We seem to lose about 7000 fans after every failiure!

That rather presumes that a 15,000 stadium would cost us less than a 23,000 one. Which isn't the case under the BU plans.

Worst Awaydays...

Oh, the worst away day ever? Bristol Rovers 2 May 1998. Lost to ten men who had had their best player (Cureton) stretchered off with a broken leg, thanks to a Paul Watson tackle (he keeps coming back to haunt us too). Relegation to the bottom flight.

Worst Awaydays...

Mine was Peterboro away last season. Last season was the 1st time that I went away regularly. And losing 5-1 was embarassing to say the least.

Worst Awaydays...

Reading away a few years back when we lost 4-0.

Worst Awaydays...

Prob Peterboro away last year. Got up there nice and early lost 5 -1 then the ****ing car blew up on the way home. Stuck at South mimms service station for 4 hours !

Worst Awaydays...

Cheltenham away last season the only highlight was the pub (O'Neill's) being on fire on the week that there was the fire strike

Shambolic way of getting into the ground, plus a 90th minute winner from them put the icing on the cake

I'm just glad we havent got to go there in the league and im hoping we dont get them in any cup competitions

Worst Awaydays...

and you lost a tonne on it didnt you?
who set that bloody pub alight? was is Gus Hurdle

Worst Awaydays...

True i did lose £125 on Brentford at odds of 11/8

I decided only to bet on them once after that home to Chesterfield a couple of weeks later

Man Utd have made me the most money this season

Ladbrokes are offering 50/1 to Brentford to come 1st, 2nd or 3rd

Worst Awaydays...

To name a few all Big important games

Bristol City last game of season in relegation year
Play of final v Crewe at Wembley
Play of final v Stoke last year

To a degree LDV v Port Vale

Worst Awaydays...

Reading away, the 4-0 drubbing, had had the mother of all drinking sessions the night before & woke up with probably the worst hangover I've ever had (& those of you who know me know that I've got plenty of those to choose from!). Remember hanging my head out the window for the entire drive there in case of projectile vomiting, feeling like death & wondering why the **** I was bothering, then a shockingly bad match with the hooped scumbags running riot before getting stuck in traffic for ****ing hours coming out of the ground.

Any time I've been driven to Wycombe rates up there with the above too.

That Orient match was the angriest Ive ever been at a football match. **** Lynch should have got lynched. Kicked off afterwards too with some Orient toerag getting chased into the pub I was in obviously not realising it was full of Brentford. The geezer stood next to me at the bar turned & clouted him sweet as you like in the face, much to the surprise of the bloke in pursuit! A nice bit of community spirit I thought, helping out a fellow Bee in need!

Worst Awaydays...

Oh & Chesterfield away that day that they hadn't won for 26 matches & it was about -20 on that open terrace. Another rotten hangover & me in a t-shirt & summer jacket thinking I was going to die of exposure.

I just remember their winner going in & their fans singing 'We're sh*t, & you're worse than us'

Worst Awaydays...

Bristol Rovers away first away game of the 1999/2000 season.I got home from Gran Canaria on the friday and decided to purchase a ticket for the game which was number 666 (i kid you not) Decided to drive on my own as at the time i was doing shift work and did'nt finish until midday.

Got as far as Swindon before my back tyre blew nearly killing me missing the central reservation by inches. At 2.40 an hour and a hour wait later i was towed to Calne 6 miles away and £45 out of pocket for a new tyre i decided to try and get the 2nd half in.

Got a mile back on the M4 before an accident meant i was stuck in traffic meaning at 4.10 i gave up and turned around to come home.

Just for good measure coming past Thorpe Park i was nicked for speeding £40 and 3 points.

The whole poxy day cost me over £100 including ticket, petrol, tyre, and speeding and i did'nt even get to see the game!!!!!!!!!!

Worst Awaydays...

This thread could run & run, I've just thought of another one!

Driving to Cardiff last year with Andy Mutton, in the fast lane of the m25 when suddenly my rear driver-side window explodes, managed to pull off & inspect the damage, then spend hours phoning various garages etc to try & get a replacement window before deciding to just finish the trip off & sort it the next day.

After a very windy, cold & noisy journey into Cardiff we miss our turnoff & have to ring a Cardiff mate to show us the way to the ground. Get into the ground just in time for kick-off to watch us lose (with ladyboy earnshaw scoring & prancing around like the nonce that he is).

Come out the ground & go round to the main entrance to meet up with a few Cardiff mates, just in time to find ourselves standing next to that geezer off the Hooligans programme, the Soul Crew geezer who was out in Belgium with England getting stuck in at the Euros. Let me tell you, you start to feel very English-looking when surrounded by 10,000 Baahdiff nutters!

To cap the night off I get to sit & watch Mutton & Logan get bladdered in some rugby club whilst staying sober for the noisy, windy, car-full-of-broken-glass, cold journey home, then we very nearly run out of petrol by Watford, meaning a panicked detour off the M25 hoping like **** that there's a petrol station near the exit!

Disaster.

Worst Awaydays...

Bristol City 1993. Having waited about 35 years to see the Bees in Div 1, top 8 at Christmas with a chance of the play-offs, it all ended up with us needing a result at Ashton Gate to stay up. Worst performance of the season ( 1-4) coupled with Birmingscum winning elsewhere by a 5 yards offside goal sent us straight back down. And we NEVER lose to Bristol City do we?:(

Reading at Elm Park on Boxing Day in our title winning year...

I have gone through the thread but I have not seen anyone question the date. so if they have I am sorry. The only I do this is to remember one of my worst games.

Huddersfield at Leeds Road on boxing day of our championship winning year of 1992.
Lost 2-1 spent all day getting there and all night getting home. we were awful, it was cold and wet. enough said.

I think that Reading game was a couple of years before that.

Worst Awaydays...

Well if we are talking about the 92 championship year, then yes it couldn't have been Reading on Boxing day, it was a Tuesday night and we drew 0-0, before that or a few days after we drew 2--2 with B'mouth and then the next six games were history   Detzi and his 8 matches unbeaten, im starting to get upset now :(

Worst Awaydays...

Chesterfield after being told by the club the game was definately on only to drive to derbyshire to see it called off.

Tranmere after being 2-0 up at half time then losing and spending 4 hours stuck in traffic on the way home.

Millwall the year we got relegated worst performance ever by a Brentford team.

Last season, hadn't played Crystal Palace (biggest enemy) in the league for nearly 15 years, big expectations, big following, having a great day out until the game started..............................and we lost 5-0!!!

Game finished at 5.10, by the time we were held in and corralled (spelling?) to Norwood Junction station, it took me nearly 4 (!!!!) hours to get to Cheshunt in Hertfordshire where I was travelling to that night!!! 4 hours, I can get to Leeds in the same amount of time from Brighton!!!

Shi**y day out :(

Plus the two recent 0-4 games at GP haven't been a bundle of fun either!!

Worst Awaydays...

Reading Nov 1988 D2-2

Basically Reading scored after 14secs , then we are 2-1 up (Sinton 2) ****** Gary Phillips in goal for them, i break my ankle after second goal , refuse to go to hospital so St John;s Ambulance stick my and my mate in the seats with the muppets from Reading , get pelted with coins ,Reading score in injury time, get back to car and have a nice parking ticket !......Superb !

Oh yeah......Gillingham in the Fa cup when we were 3-1 up with 10 mins to go (who can forget ?) end up losing 5-3 !

That will haunt me forever.......although what was quite amusing was the Gills offical who said to me Dad on the way out..Justice was done ! Justice was done ! My old man nearly killed him !
