I've always thought this was one of those letter of the rules of the game v spirit of the game issues.

Do the rules say anywhere that you are supposed to give the ball back?

Having said that I would find it infuriating if we had conceded possession by kicking the ball out for one of the opposition to be treated only for the opposition to keep possession at the restart

...and no doubt it'd ask the referee to question whether "intent" was involved.

Seem to remember when we played at Birmingham when Barry Fry was in charge, we kicked the ball out for a player to get treatment and Birmingham took the throw to their own player and were immediately on the attack. Karma !!

I couldn't open the web-link, but I think that the minimum sportsmanship should be to make it clear whether you're returning the ball or not, ie if Birmingham pushed all their players upfield on the assumption that the ball would be thrown to their keeper to clear it, and a Yeovil player dashed through to take the ball and score, that would be out of order, but if Yeovil made it clear (eg by getting several forwards around the box ready to take the ball from the throw) that they were playing on normally, then it's borderline, especially with the ball put into touch for an injured Birm player/

I seem to remember Gary Johnson involved in something similar a few years ago - back of my mind feeling that it was Bristol City and Yeovil, but might be wrong

Think he was involved in an incident v Plymouth. But did I imagine it or did he let Brum walk the ball into the net later?? Not heard much comment about that.

Yep agreed - too many teams do it to waste time feigning head injuries.

The one way to stop it would be to allow physio's 'onto' the pitch with the referres instruction whilst the game continues like in rugby.
