If the keeper doesn’t pick up the ball but the ref is still required to administer the above sanctions, then I would suggest that the law is an absolute ass hole.

If you were a fan of the opposition team, you'd be livid if this kept happening without the ref stepping in....

If the goalkeeper doesn't pick the ball up, there's no effective way to tell whether a 'deliberate trick' has been initiated to circumvent the backpass rule... because no circumvention has occurred. To give a free kick, the ref is effectively having to read the player's mind.

A 'goalkeeper initiated deliberate trick' would be next to impossible to detect if the goalkeeper doesn't pick the ball up with their hands. A GK might chip the ball to a defender, who heads it back, and then the GK wellies it up field. No ref in their right mind would ever call that back for a free kick.

The law states that either the goalkeeper or the outfield player could 'initiate a trick'.

In either case... if the goalkeeper picks the ball up, the backpass rule has been circumvented, which doesn't make it any easier to read what's in the mind of a player who 'initiated the trick', but does make it much easier for the ref to give a free kick.

If no circumvention has occured, you're effectively punishing thought crime on a football field.

I didn't say thought crime is being punished, I said in this specific hypothetical (in which no circumvention of the backpass rule actually happens) for the ref to give a free kick they'd effectively be penalising the player's thought.

I doubt it's happening though, I can't imagine this law has ever been applied in an instance where a goalkeeper hasn't actually picked the ball up... mainly because the ref would look mental.

To my mind, a) you and @Banana are saying exactly the same thing, and b) the whole scenario is completely fantastical anyway. Can’t imagine this bizarre situation ever playing out, let alone why anyone would ever think it necessary to legislate for it. Like making contingency plans for the cow tripping up over the moon. Maybe I’ve misunderstood @SmiffyBee ‘s premise?

I couldn't tell if he was calling my words crazy, or the law crazy but yes, I was being hyperbolic... could you imagine in the world cup final... Messi receives the ball, does a couple of keepy uppies, heads the ball back to Martinez, who volleys it forward to a striker who's through on goal... the ref's whistle blows "free kick – you were initiating a trick to circumvent the backpass rule"

Only one west ham player called for a foul when welbeck hit the bar with the pen and then was the first to touch the rebound !.

In the same game the ref said on the tannoy when giving the pen decision the name of the team fouling etc whereas in the Chelsea game the ref in the same scenario onto referred to the team by their colour
