Zonal Marking

It was clear from the Gateshead match that AS has implemented zonal marking at set pieces. To be fair it worked against Gateshead but surely if we adopt this in the league we will encounter problems! Gateshead had a couple of lumps but in league 1 there are a lot more so not too sure about this one.

If that's the case then while he's at it maybe he should think about increasing the size of Lewis Price's zone a bit, to include more than just the goal line.

...................why does he insist on the whole team in the penalty area for corners????...............leave someone up as an outlet..............the ball returns instantly from defence.................

Especially someone with the pace of Weston, I thought he was going to the outlet we've haven't had for donks.

If this is the case, then I suggest he looks at the zone marked "middle of six yard box" again after the Millwall game.

Might explain then why I thought Legge seemed to be marking nobody.

Does that mean we are the Liverpool of the Lower Leagues and AS is going to get all porky and talk in riddles?

Perhaps the failings of Gateshead away & Millwall at home was the reason things were changed for Tuesday night

at first I thought we had signed a foreign goalie.

I mentioned that we were doing this in the Millwall game too. In most instances is simply doesn't work. You give an opponent a free run at the ball whilst you mark the space in front and have to try and compete with a standing jump.

Zonal marking is a fad. If two attackers invade your zone you are F****ed. The Millwall equaliser was embarrassing-no marking - easy header. The best defenders are the Italians and they use the old man for man stuff- no confusion and eveyone knows their job. Perhaps AS should take responsibility for the leaky defence.

You must be wrong...it had to be Price's fault?

From what I saw on the TV Bennet was simply ball watching

Nonsense...

If worked correctly then zonal marking can be just as effective...

By all means blame poor implementation but the saying the system is to blame is like saying 4-4-2 won't work...the point is that all systems have advantages and disadvantages and if we have been "found out" by better scouting and coaches in League One then a change may in the short term help us..

In my opinion Scotty has been fairly regimented in his team set-ups & tactical approach however the signing of Bostock may yet prove to be a catalyst to changing the percentage game we play.

"in most instances" is what I said , so yes in certain times it can be effective. Although the usual problem is when implementing any new system is teething problems when players have been used to man marking, getting used to the effective ways Zone marking can have could cost you a few goals at first. However as we have been conceding goals from set plays when man marking too, much of the problem is probably concentration anyway.

Just a thought...

How many corners did we concede against Millwall last week?

How many goals did we concede from corners in the game?

Hardly "in most instances" is it? ;)

How many corners were taken effectively by Millwall? ;)

I've looked at the video and if you look very closely the ground staff have left the "Keep Off of The Grass" signs on the pitch:fishing:

Sorry to disagree. Zonal marking is all about marking space and we all know that space never scored a goal. Call me old fashioned but... [ bring back leather footballs].

Thought he played for Dynamo Kiev.

He plays for a Norwegian team, Zonal Marking and Ariel Dominence are their equivalent of Bennett & Osborne:sorted:
