Getting better with every game as confidence grows. He and Rico have had a cracking last two games.

Am confident he will go up another level even with Ajer beside him, knowing he has a very quick centre back who can cover behind Hickey as well as protect him from long diagonal balls

Aaron Hickey

Bumped in to Aaron in Five Guys tonight, he was picking up a takeaway.

Congratulated him on an excellent game last night, especially that last ditch block at "our end" to prevent a dangerous chance getting near Raya.

He was the definition of polite but not chatty, but why would you expect anything else. Unless i dreamt it - and frankly i was as giddy as a schoolgirl so can't be entirely sure - he pointed out we could have won it.

I hope he enjoyed his "night off" carbs, he earned them. Was wondering whose name to get on my shirt this season... Sounds like fate is telling me something.

Which Five Guys?

Will it be "Five Guys" by any chance......??......

Agree with the above but what a signing this young man is. You can tell he’s partly learned how to defend in Italy - he has that knack of being niggly but always just shy of conceding a cheap free kick - a pull on the arm, a little snap at the ankles, a shoulder charge on the follow through. And only 20 years old? ?

Aaron Hickey

The Dof's have so got this signing right. After a season of people"filling in" it's great to have a specialist player in the position.

Get a bit more pace in the centre of defence, and with him and Rico I think we've got a defence that doesn't need changing for years(apart from the age of Pontus).

Aaron Hickey

First time I've seen Hickey play for Brentford was yesterday (I watched him all season last season). Had an eye on him when you guys played Manchester United, but things got in the way.

Good to see him doing so well. :)

I also watched Nathan Patterson put in a MOTM display against Liverpool, so Steve Clarke will have to sit down and think about where to start Aaron Hickey.

Either a part of the back 3 or an anchorman in midfield. We desperately need a player in midfield with defensive capabilities, as the current balance is askew.

The great thing is that Hickey is so versatile that he could play anywhere in defence and midfield and still shine.

He just needs time to grow and blossom. Definitely at the right club to do it.

Aaron Hickey

I thought yesterday was a real test for him. But for an appalling referee and an even worse VAR decision Dirty Leeds would’ve had a penalty when 3-1 down. But it’s all experience in the bank. He’ll be a top, top player ?

Hickey is better than Patterson.

So Steve Clarke should worrying about where to fit Patterson in around Hickey, not the other way around.

HTH.

As full backs/wing backs, they're different. Patterson is bigger physically and he's more or a marauder. Scotland need more of the latter.

Hickey is more versatile than Patterson.

We play a 3-5-2

I wouldn’t trust Patterson in the 3 or in the middle of the 5. He does have shades of Bale, so he could play as a second striker... wouldn't risk it, though, at least not at this stage of his career.

Going forward, both will start for Scotland. Guaranteed. It's not a case of either/or.

Rather than putting half the team out of position he could go for an innovative 6-3-1 formation with a pair of full backs and a pair of wing backs. Maybe 7-2-1 against tougher opposition if he insists on playing McTominay as a CB.

By jove, that's just crazy enough to work! ;)

I know that you're being facetious but I don't bye into this "out of position" nonsense. It's not like players are born with a football position stamped on their DNA. It's not table football.

The better a player is, the more versatile he will is.

The reason we play with 3 at the back is because we don't produce center backs good enough to play in a two... pretty much the reason Tierney and McTominay plays there, too.

And now we have ANOTHER world class left back emerging in the shape of Josh Doig who scored in Seria A on his Verona debut.

Glad you got that I was kidding! Maybe the more realistic alternative is 343 and playing the most aggressive of the WBs as wingers. It is odd that Scotland has a dearth of CBs though and maybe the thing to do would be to find more agricultural types and play a low block so as not to be asking them to do an unnatural job. I joke about McTominay but his recent performances with Eriksen show he can do a good water carrier job as CDM if he’s got someone who can pass nearby to lay the ball to. As a CB I think he suffers from Maguire syndrome in having too little confidence in his options ahead or of his keeper behind and himself has too little ability but too much passion so makes errors. If your forward players can keep good defensive shape, as Man U are now starting to, it relieves so much pressure. You can’t have him but I reckon Frank could probably get Scotland to tournament finals and out of the group stages.

God! Tell me about it! Soon enough Doig will be in the EPL. With Tierney, Robertson, Patterson, Hickey and Ashby (English born), it's not even funny anymore.

We haven't regularly produced quality center backs since the 80s. Which is why Craig Brown switched to a three, which lead to almost three qualifications back to back (we should've brat England in the Euro '20 play offs. Then Berti Vogts switched to a back 4, as did his processors. It's no coincidence that we only began qualifying when Clark switched to a 3. It was a longgggggg 20 years!

Yeah. McTominay really has been brilliant since Ten Hag has come in. I love Ole, but the players weren't coached under his stewardship. And you're spot-on, Erikson has made the world of a difference, as he knits play between McTominay and Bruno.

If McTominay keeps it up, the £60m man Casemiro won't get into the team. Gotta say, I saw it coming. Is McTominay the best player in the world? No. But he's a manager's dream. He doesn't cause any problems, he has no ego and he'll do exactly he's told.

You can see from the Arsenal and Liverpool matches that McTominay is really loving being coached by Ten Hag. It'll be great for Scotland, too.

Yeah. What I love about Frank is that he looks like one of those managers that players love to play for, and they don't want to let them down, kinda like Sir Alex Ferguson, etc.

McTominay will spend half the season suspended if he keeps up his current rate of yellow cards.

I know it was only 1 game, but did you see McTominay's "showreel/highlights" in the 4-0 v us??!! ???

We also bullied Martinez off at HT but he’s been good for them since. Maybe we’re good though (even the three monkeys on the Square Ball preview said we were good and that a draw would be a good result for them!).

True.

I think EtH has told him to use his physicality more and to get in people's faces more, (which I like) irrespective if he gets suspended.

Watching him against Arsenal was akin to watching a hybrid of Keane and Vieira.

He was too nice under OGS and Rangrick.

I didn't. I intended to watch the game but things got in the way.

I think it was an overlap from last season, from every United player.

You have to remember that the United players haven't been properly coached for 3 years (under Ole). Going from that stagnation to a top manager in Ten Hag was never going to an overnight transition.

There is absolutely no way you have said that with any degree of seriousness ?

He body slammed Jesus into the ground and also was responsible for Jesus cracking him head on the ground.

Those two moves alone vindicates what I just wrote. :p

More performances like this and he'll be feared in the EPL:

lol

See the video that I just posted. ;)

McTominay (and Rashford) are two of the biggest victims of lack of coaching and direction at United over the past 3 years.

McTominay has been the scapegoat for United fans since Pogba and Lingard left. But the fact is that he's keeping two Brazilian midfielders worth a combined fee of £110m out of the United team. (You can add £40m Van Der Beek)

Hickey's already got a song, it was sung at Palace and against Leeds. I can't work out the tune though. Does anyone who was there at either game know what it is?

Sung at Leicester too. Not as good as the Toni Basil one would be.

I heard people chanting a Hickey song the other day but couldn't make our any tune at all, if it was the Proclaimers that is news to me!

Anyway
People ain't going to sing three full verses of the Proclaimers unamended just so they can sing "Aaron Hickey" instead of part of the chorus.
Would like to know if there is any more to the adapted version it than just this bit though:

Aaron hickey (Aaron Hickey), Aaron Hickey (Aaron Hickey)
Da-da-da dun-diddle un-diddle un-diddle uh da-da

Yeah. That'll work.

I must say, though, Scotland sing every verse of that "Doe a deer" song from The Sound of Music, so you lads have to work on your organization. ;)
