When building a squad, wide players that can play on both sides are obviously great if you can find them - as you can then have cover and quality across multiple positions.
It is quite rare though that you see someone who is genuinely so two-footed. Especially a fullback; such technically strong players usually end up as forwards. Hickey is a true outlier in this sense.
You then look at his numbers. A regular in Serie A and a full international as a teenager. Scoring goals. Winning MOTM awards. He sticks out big time and would be a great addition to most squads at the top level.
It strikes me as amazing, then, that we have pulled this signing off. There was no better option for him than Brentford - how incredible is that? Goes to show how far we have come. He will get the perfect balance here of first team minutes and the development opportunity of being part of a very strong team at the very highest level of the game.
He is obviously not the finished article, and unlike many others, I don’t see him immediately displacing our captain (Pontus) or previous record signing (Ajer) from the side in a back four. I think the intention will be that he will be gradually introduced as a RWB in a 3-5-2 when we play that system and we will see him reach his full potential over time. But it’s a very exciting addition and another transfer record smashed!
