Aaron Hickey

Aaron Hickey

He is an excellent two footed player, cuts inside or out, playing at cb he played a cool calm game.
As Andrews says he is an intelligent footballer, reading the game and danger so he’s a yard ahead of others.
That’s the fourth position he’s played for us, Cb, Rb, Lb and defensive midfielder and never looks out of place in any of them.

Aaron Hickey

If wasn’t against Hull would definitely be on cards but suspect Keith will go Sangare, Jensen and Damsgaard.
I'm not sure Jensen and Damsgaard are a starting pairing; one starting and one as the substitute, maybe. In the absence of a second holding midfielder, it makes sense for a defender to start, or Lewis-Potter with Diouf at left back.

Aaron Hickey

I think it’s time to start having conversations about him- looks like one of our best players every time he comes on, shame for him that our fullbacks are playing out their skins currently. Can see him playing in midfield soon.

He can be more influential playing centrally as so two footed and intelligent as a player and calm on ball. He is not the quickest although no slouch so probably in way Keith likes to attack games hickey is either better suited as playing central defender alongside a more physical centre half or defensive midfield .

Aaron Hickey

Undoubtedly a very talented player. Plays with both feet, calm, aggressive when needed. But I don’t see him as a central midfielder in the top half of the Premier League. Just like I don’t see Ajer as a full back. I want to see Hickey competing for right back or left back. He’s not fast, creative, or dynamic enough to play centre midfield.

Half of our fanbase was clamouring for him there. It isn’t easy to play ‘out of position’ in the Premier League. Sounds like a cliche, but it is unforgiving.

Yes, obviously limited options today so forced hand. I just don’t think it worked. You need specialists and he looked like he was playing out of position, in my opinion.

Aaron Hickey

He is obviously nowhere near the finished article as a central midfielder, he’s only started 2 games there. But I think KA was right to start him there today and I reckon he has all the attributes to play there in the future. Must be more progressive at times, but I don’t think he would be getting so much criticism if it wasn’t for the penalty, which wasn’t his fault anyway and left him on a yellow. A 6/10 performance today

Five out of ten at best. He's not a central midfielder and never will be IMO. Due to lack of other options he was the right choice to start there today but I'd be surprised in the extreme if he started any more games in that position. Happy to have him as second choice RB and able to fill in on the left or even at CB in extremis.
I've watched the penalty incident multiple times and no one is going to convince me he didn't get the ball first. Contact with the leg and a slight tug of the shirt came afterwards.

Aaron Hickey

Harsh comments, was given a suicide pass from Kelleher and tbh felt he got the ball and was slightly unlucky to get a pen against him.

Could have panicked and just pulled the man back and had a red card.

Did alright in midfield otherwise if unspectacular. Reminds me of KOC in his calmness and versatility, wouldn’t worry about him playing there again.

Aaron Hickey

I'd be tempted to play him again in that CDM role against Sunderland if he's fit enough to do so. Felt for him a bit today as he was thrown into an unfamiliar role but he was at fault for the Hull goal, as was Kelleher.

He might still be a useful option in that role.

Um,he had a handful of shirt after the tackle helping him to go down.

I was hoping we’d go with the two Danes with Sangare and take the game to them, but given the conditions, the opposition and the lack of a proper six I totally understood why we went with Hickey, but don’t think it really worked. When Dams came on we looked a lot better but that may not have been the case from the start. A tough call given the absentees, but I’d say we shouldn’t try it again too soon.

The pen wasn’t Aaron’s fault though, it was a casual hospital pass from Kelleher albeit he is used to playing similar, not quite as short, balls into Vitaly who is very adept at dealing with them.

How was he at fault for the Hull goal?

Only Kelleher’s immediate family might cling to that one.

Aaron Hickey

He wouldn't get another suspension until 10 yellows would he?
No.
His YC card count has been re-set to 4 I believe.
He'll get another 1 game suspension when he reaches 5 Yellows.
And a 2 game suspension when (if) he reaches 10 YCs by GW32

He was sold a hospital pass but he shouldn't have been in that position to receive that pass in the first place. Should have been further forward.

I would say it's the deep lying midfielder's job to come short and bring an opposition player with him, thus leaving more space further up the pitch. Just shouldn't be passed to if tightly followed.

Not that short though.

Aaron Hickey

He’s potentially our best footballer but doesn’t get in the first choice 11. Strange one.
I accept people see football and footballers differently but IMO he's not even in the debate to be potentially our best footballer. I won't list others but he certainly wouldn't make my top half a dozen.

Aaron Hickey

Somehow got x2 votes in MoM?
Every week we get a 'comedian' or two who finds it amusing to vote for someone who had a stinker or got off the bench for two minutes.
I'm not suggesting Hickey had a stinker but he looked like a full back playing midfield. As someone else said, it's the same with Ajer, who looks like a CB playing full back when he does that role.

Exactly, Kelleher should never have even attempted the pass with a clear high press all over Hickey that also made a long ball risky. There's a lot of questions to be answered in the debrief: where were the defenders; surely they could see what was happening, so who showed to receive the pass; who should be taking organisational responsibility in that high press situation.

Aaron Hickey

To me he was playing too deep as a DM and therefore being too close to Ajer/VDB to be effective enough in my opinion. I'm sure he'll learn from it, but we were much better once Damsgard came on in his usual role leaving Sangare to drop a bit.

Aaron Hickey

Not that short though.
Indeed, something wasn't right in execution but I think the principle is sound. Fully on Kelleher though imo, pass shouldn't have been contemplated given the Hull midfielder's position.

Aaron Hickey

Essentially the same goal Jensen scored vs. Man Utd when he dispossessed Eriksen (and we won 4-0). De Gea made the wrong decision passing out to Eriksen. Kelleher made the wrong decision passing out to Hickey.

Aaron Hickey

Totally the keeper’s fault as he’s the only one facing the play and can see who’s pressing.

Button did the same at Swindon in 2014 costing us the game.

Aaron Hickey

Yeah but he also made a genuine (somewhat successful) attempt to play the ball.

Had he not done that and just pulled the guy back, it’s a red card.
I'm not laying any of the blame at Hickey's door.It was stupid for Kelleher to pass to him under pressure like that.

Aaron Hickey

We do the same pass week in week out and Janelt is the recipient . Wasn’t the best pass though to him

Agreed.

The difference is that Janelt is a DM and well drilled for it and Hickey has no experience there and Kelleher should know that.

Is Aaron on the GPG?

Yes but it’s amazing how often this error occurs. It makes me cringe sometimes too, when he boots the ball upfield at the last moment when confronted by an attacker. I think I’ll teach myself to look away in future.
