Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

Rotherham fan here.

It seems as though Andy Scott's time at Rotherham may be coming to an end, unless there is a dramatic upturn in form.

Every week, he says the same things in his post match interview. 'The players don't listen to what they've been told', 'If they do as I tell them it works and they need to realise that'.

He plays people out of position at the expense of better players, he uses a 4-4-2 formation when it's obvious we need to change it. He promised us promotion, but he is failing miserably. He doesn't appear to have built any solid foundations in the team, despite changing virtually every member of the backroom staff, getting rid of people who'd been loyal servants.

My question is, although he got you promoted, did he build a solid foundation to your squad, and did he get the best out of his players?

He is a shocking man manager. Awful. Too much hot air was blown up his arse because he got us promoted but that was reliant on some decent loan signings. His style of football is terrible. Kick and run dross

That's cheered me right up to be honest!

I'll admit I thought Andy Scott was actually a decent manager but the time was right for a change because he lost the plot a bit due to all of the above. I thought he'd learn from his mistakes and take Rotherham to play-offs but obviously not!

Still, only four points off the play-offs so how bad can he be?! :fishing:

all I will say is Dont get me started!

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

History repeating itself I am afraid. To be fair he did get us out of L2 and as champions but in the end it was obvious that he lacks the man management and tactical skills to be a good manager. The after match comments are exactly the same as his last few months here. To say that players are continually not doing what they are told is frankly embarrassing as it is his job to make them listen.

Good luck for the rest of the season (probably with a new manager)

What Bigbee states here is "the facts". I noticed how you got off to a good start, but wasn't surprised at the poor results further into the season. Basically he is not a bad bloke, but does put too much blame on to his players rather than accepting a larger percentage himself. Hope you do have a good season, and would be interesting to hear from you again at the season end.

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

He saved us from relegation when he took charge, got us promoted in his first full season, consolidated our position in League 1 the season after, and then the wheels came off. So make of that what you will.

His man-management obviously leaves something to be desired, but can he get you out of League 2? I would have thought so.

You are 4 points off the play-offs, can you stop moaning? And we are 4 points off the play-offs, can we also stop moaning?

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

Millerman, I suggest that you read the historic reports to save a number of people on here from advanced medical conditions while posting. We have our current manager, team, back-room staff and generous financier to concern ourselves about, disregarding the condition of the pitch and our dreadful "entertainment value".

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

Deja vu. Exactly what happened here. Everyone else was to blame.

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

I think the thoughts of the majority of Rotherham fans, would be that he talks the talk but doesn't deliver. He has brought in some decent players, but your former player Sam Wood played (poorly) at left back on Saturday, and Lewis Grabban is looking disinterested at right wing (despite his decent goals tally). We had a great start to the season but we had Le Fondre then.

When things go well, he takes the credit, but when things go badly he blames the players. 4 points outside the playoffs and losing to almost every team above us is unsettling the natives.

I was sincerely sorry when we lost Sam Wood to you. I can only think he had an "off day" on Saturday, as he is normally a consistent player. As another poster has said, you are only 4 points from the play offs, so who knows, you might just make into them even yet.

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

The whole Andy Scott thing is a bit of a mixed bag....what he did here needs to be respected, he took us up from low down in League Two, and in his first full season in charge got us promoted as champions, then got us 9th the following season in League One. That needs to be respected, but that said after that things started to change, when he was aiming for promotion from League One things started to fall apart.

His first season in League One most teams were better than us, we were against the odds in a way so a lot of the games had a 'they're the better team, but let's put in a lot of effort and organisation and see what we can get' feel, and maybe that's where Scott's strengths lie, none of the big teams (Milwall, Leeds, Norwich, Southampton, Charlton, Hudders) won at GP that year, against the odds. Last season with us his Carling Cup run was fantastic, but our league form was poor while we were having a proper 'go' at promotion.

It's hard to pin-point exactly, but as has been mentioned what you're saying in post 1 is pretty much the exact thoughts that were echoed on here 1 year ago. But I also get the impression that the style of football being played (i.e. hoof it up and see what you can get from that) was one of the reasons the decision was made to let him go, as in the long run the club wanted an attractive style of football being played at Griffin Park (still a work in progress). I hoped he'd do well at Rotherham though, but to be honest your season is startlingly familiar to ours...very promising start, followed by bad form and inconsistent results. It's not too late though, and hope you all the best for the remainder of the season.

well that lasted about five minutes.

First thing Andy Scott should do is read Sir Alex Ferguson's guide to Press Conferences!

Never slag your own players off in public is almost the first rule of Man-Management.
Talk to someone face to face and look them in the eyes when your about to slate them and do so in the privacy of the Manager's office.

Playing people out of position....come on...not like the AS we know......lol....YOU REDS....

Some of his selection decisions were baffling at best and playing people out of position was a regular occurance. If you read some of what has been said by players who played under him you can see that his man management, or lack of it, was terrible and his tendancy to criticise players publically was painful at times. He organised us well in L2 and got in some seriously good loanees, but when they dried up and he came up against better managers he was found wanting..... hitting it long and hoping quick wingers create lots of chances will only him so far.

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

Shame he sounds like he is still his own biggest fan & therefore unable to learn anything from his mistakes.
Has he "closed ranks" yet? Give him his F**ham job now please!

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

I must say, when you went up as champions, you had a strong and organised team. He reckons we have the best squad he's had to work with, and a decent budget as well, and don't look nearly as organised as you did. We move into a new stadium next season, and the chairman's plan of being in League One when we do so are looking mighty thin.

I do rate Sam Wood and he has been consistent at left midfield, and it was his poorest perfomance for us to date. However, we had an unfit left midfielder playing and two natural left backs not even on the bench.

I think the fans would have more patience if it wasn't for his constant blaming the players. Ronnie Moore was sacked when we were 4th last season, we're now 11th this.

One particular displeasing comment from his post match interview "It amazes me the mentality of some players, They think they know it all."

Some people just don't learn from their mistakes, do they Mr Scott!

What you have wrote Millerman sums up AS very nicely!

I think the moment when it really clicked that he'd lost it was when he brought in Tudur-Jones and started him at centre-half at Oldham.

Wood is better on the wing, AS should know that by now! Don't worry though, Sam will be put at centre back next week knowing AS.

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

I always preferred Sam Wood in midfield.

Poor old Andy Scott. Hasn't learned a thing, by the sound of it.

Sam Wood is not a left back....no no no....why is it Scott plays him there

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

Sam Wood was never a left back; plenty of energy in left midfield and played superbly as a man-marker when the opposition had a key playmaker.

He won't learn. If he's on his way out, he won't be able to turn it around.

Grabban back on the right wing? Ha ha.

:imwith: Did a great job on Houlihann at Norwich

We also went up because we had some good loanees in key positions. Hamer, Bennett, Clarke & Rhodes, to compliment our players inc. Legge, Dickson, Hunt, O'Connor, Bean, Osborne, MacDonald... etc. our only weakness was the right side.

He'll blame others before himself. I will say that he started off brightly, when he took over from Butcher, but gradually his ego took over. Shame in a way. Good luck!

The sad thing, Millerman, is that he just doesn't seemed to have learned any lessons from his time with us.
He got lucky a few times in the loan market: Jordan Rhodes, Billy Clarke played a big part in turning our form around to get us promoted and then he got Czseny in goal from Arsenal when we were back in Division One, who truly was worth about eight or ten points over the season.

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

AS is like gangrene and the only antidote is amputation so get out the long knives ASap.

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

I think the moment when it really clicked that he'd lost it was when he brought in Tudur-Jones and started him at centre-half at Oldham.

Yeah, that was a moment. Didn't Tudor-Jones say that he had never played centre-half?
I would also mention sending out an unchanged side for an away game at Leyton Orient on a Friday night on about three days rest, after they had played in the Carling Cup while Orient had had a weeks rest.

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

Sounds like AS for sure. Sam Wood isn't a LB, he's proved that time and time again for us at Brentford. Scott also used to play Grabban on the wing which never worked until Forster took over as manager, he played him upfront towards the end of the season and he looked really good! (Which is why I didn't want him to go!). On a sad note for the Rotherham fan who's posted on here, things are only going to get worse for you guys now that he's done his trademark of singling out players. Next it'll be virtually everything apart from himself and then it'll be you lot, the fans. He's a very very arrogant man. When things are going well he thinks he's unstoppable, when things aren't he puts the blame on everyone else but himself.

Andy Scott, Your Thoughts Please?

Well, thanks for the responses. I had hoped that there would be something positive about AS, but alas, my sitting on the fence has me leaning towards the side of wanting a new man in. It's just so frustrating when everyone can see what's going wrong apart from him. I would be very surprised if he lasts beyond the Summer, and it just highlights the massive clanger our chairman dropped by getting rid of his predecessor.

Legge didn't play for us in League Two. He arrived the following summer. Mark Phillips and Bennett were the pairing that got us up.

He stopped us getting relegated, got us promoted, then kept us up, which some might think positives.

Sure, he isnt a 'nice guy' like Uwe is, but then again... how much of an improvement has Uwe actually been?

Well since you asked for something positive...I wouldn't put the loan signings of Hamer, Rhodes, Szczesny,Billy Clark all down to being lucky as one poster suggested. There'll be certain players who are his favourites and won't be dropped (Hamer was an example for us, probably Wood for you now he's signed him twice) but he may get the best out of, if he manages to sign enough of these players, get some decent loans in realise the whole world isn't against him you might go up sometime. Winning the league in his first full season and having fans singing his name every week was probably the worst thing that happened in his career. Just seen the interview he did after the Swindon match and it's unbelievable how little composure and self restraint he's got - I hope he learns how to cope with the frustration of not beaing able to win the league every year.

Oh and can you ask him if he still reads this forum?

In Andy Scott's first season at Brentford as manager / Assistant - we finished mid table in League 2
In Andy Scott's 2nd season he won the league
In his third season he finished mid table in League 1
Don't employ him for longer than 3 years

Ultimately it's a results business, but what were Rotherham expecting this season ?
He has had to sell his best striker, not sure what other dealings he has done, seems to be getting the best out of Grabban.
If he was winning every game, I am sure Millers wouldn't be grumbling about his style :dog:

He has had money. In fact, we've had over half a million in upfront transfer payments coming in since the end of last season. When we made a good start, he said we could win the league. We then went something like ten without a win, which is when he first started having a go at the players.

He spent last Summer rebuilding, bringing in a number of players from Championship clubs, some of whom he has subsequently shipped out or has just not played. I think the biggest problem is that we seem to be worse than last season, and have players who play like they don't know what they're supposed to be doing. Out of their natural positions, or in the team one week, have a good game, then inexplicably out of the team again.

My biggest fear is that all this rebuilding has taken us backwards, and there don't seem to be any players to build a good team around. And the younger ones are having their confidence destroyed with his criticism.

having defenders like Guy Branston and Jon Harley don't help, who are in the 30's lol

I think you are AS on a wind up...............Nothing there that many at BFC didn't say.

I will say this though, every time I met him, either in the hotel before a match or at the ground for a reserve match he always had time to speak to me. No problems (from here, light blue touch paper) about his personality but your views are very much like others have said on here in the past. I really do hope he makes it, but will need to learn some lessons.
