Andy Scott

I reserve judgement on him possibly till after next season(if he is still here) I feel Andys record is a bit of a mixed bag.

Based on measuring Andy's performance over a season, his record is not a mixed bag but one of continuous improvement.

Almost every team has periods during the season when their form dips, we are no exception.

Andy Scott

I am keeping an open mind on the should he go/should he stay debate, but I don't think we are getting the best out of the squad at present (last night excepted!). If AS can correct that, then great. However, should he go, the club are probably in a good enough condition to attract a decent replacement, and it would certainly be fascinating to see what another manager was able to do with this set of players. Of course, we might find then that we wanted AS back!

Are you serious mate??

Maybe based on stats. But when you see them play well, one week, and just when you think we are on the up we then turn in a dismal performance. and I mean dismal,I know last season is history but I spent a lot of money on sone away games and the team never turned up. I went to the first match this season and we were crap. The two good home games I have seen were Sheff wed, and everton, and an ok away performance at Bristol Rovers. That is why I call it a mixed bag. We need to be more consistant.
It is the league that matters, not just a couple of good cup games

Couldn't the same be said for the vast majority of lower league sides though ? You only have to look at the number of games lost by the sides who filled the promotion positions in this league last year to realise that even the best teams form peaks and troughs at this level.

You've been going long enough to know that being a supporter of a lower league club is all about taking the rough with the smooth, any there's generally more rough than smooth ! Any bugger can trot along to Stanford Bridge every other week and watch wonderful free flowing football but trapsing up to Accrington on a cold Tuesday night to watch a turgid 1 - 0 defeat is something else entirely and it's what sets lower league fans apart.

Very true Owlsmoor, and you are quite right. I should no better. Some of our tactics concern me. I just wish Andy had left the dugouts where they were.
I just happen to hear what he says, and some of it does not fill me with much confidence. But he is the manager and I'm not, so what do i know.

Andy Scott

I chose my words very carefully. "Some posters". I know of at least two who will give out stick when it's justified & praise when that's appropriate. I absolutely agree that some have already made their mind up and can't wait for the day when they can say "I told you so".

Yes, it was obvious that you had. I just remain entirely incredulous that only two days after we beat an established premiership side and in the context of three years of continued improvement the subject of should AS stay or go is even being discussed. However, as NB indicates above, its seems to be as much about personal dislike as anything else. For my part, what AS is like as a person (within reason!) is a matter of complete indifference to me

Good post.

Andy Scott

Andy is a young manager and will make a few decisions that don't come off - that is a natural part of his learning process. I remember Ron Noades saying that if you got 40% of your signings right you were doing well as a manager. I think the club is going in the right direction what with the concentration on a stronger youth policy and we certainly have a better first team squad than we've had for many years - and its building. Our long-term prospects look bright. It looks to me like we may have to be satisfied with cup success this year, but who knows. I think we're a bit short up front, but as soon as Andy sorts that out we'll be gunning for promotion

Andy Scott

I seemed to stir up a hornets' nest with my post last night, and if you read it, I did not call for AS to go, I was merely musing having read some of the vitriolic posts after the Hartlepool game.
I was at the Hartlepool game myself, and it was dire. The Everton result, wonderful though it was, does not suddenly make it all right, if anything it begs the question why is the league form so poor when they are clearly capable of so much better. I sincerely hope AS does get it sorted, the sooner the better.

We have lost 1 game in 8.

Andy Scott

I don't want Andy sacked. I think he's doing a good job as manager - in general. He does seem to learn from his mistakes, eventually.

On the other hand I don't want to see unconditional worship of a manager - any manager - whilst they're doing a good job because it'll all end in tears when either they leave for a 'better' job or we have to sack them. All manager's are temporary and sometimes I think - as with players - we should avoid getting too attached to them.

But maybe I'm just a miserable old cynic.

Andy Scott

Yes but surely the improvement is there to see. We had a terrible start and have turned it around.

So having beaten a Prem side on penalties a few days after one of the worst and most spineless home performance ever means that we have turned it around?
We've done this already this season, Cheltenham lead to Walsall, Hull to Rochdale, Bristol to Hartlepool and so on. None of us have a scooby what sort of performance from us tomorrow. We will be rather good or extremely sh*te, this is our worst league start in 54 years FFS with a healty budget behind us.
You are a top bloke Nick but also far too mentally happy with Scott's mad reign.

View from New Road....

Its comes down to a common sense vs frustration discussion, which is healthy on a message board.

Common sense dictates this squad has been shrewdly assembled by Scott and his scouts, that this is the most talented squad we have had for many a year and improving, frustration surfaces that performances and tactics have been hot and cold.

For an example, Carlisle away was not money well spent, but it is what it is, you enjoy everything else about the day, except the football on some days like that. It didn't make me lose belief in Scott or the team. I get frustrated as many when we don't win, Bristol Rovers I was chuntering how we can't win, but I saw how we played, I saw improvement, so that is enough for that week and we move on. Everton proved what the team and crowd can do. They stood up, we backed them, together it was memorable.:)

I understand the frustration at the style and tactics Scotty employs to get results, especially away when they don't show, I've seen some horror shows :nono: at Macc, Accy, Yeovil, Wycombe to name 4 over the past two years, but I temper that with great performances against Shrewsbury, Norwich, Leeds, Southampton, Hull and Everton to even the balance.

If we go on a winless run, Scotty will know before us the pressure will be on, but in truth, the board since his appointment run the club with a great deal of common sense, I view my club in a much healthier state than 2008, I want more, like we all do, but I temper it that as we are a League 1 club, it's a rollercoaster of a ride. History will judge Scott, as a success or failure, the beauty is nobody knows whether he will be the man to take us to the land of plenty, here's hoping.:sorted:

Andy Scott

Not true, surely? 1970-71 was far worse I'm led to believe. 1989-90 also?

89-90 was a disastrous start wasn't it. We were still in single digits after about 15 games, weren't we? Even more surprising after all the heroics the year before, but it clicked in the end.

Andy Scott

We've just beaten :

Sheffield Wednesday
Hull City
Everton

Watch out Charlton !!

Ironically, i think that the results against Hull, Wednesday and Everton actually work against AS (in the context of the current debate). The uqestion has to be, we clearly have the ability, so why are we so inconsistent? Having said that, even if it may be our worst league start in umpteen years, i still think it will come right in the end, but the frustration at not reguarly exploiting such a telented squad is, for me, immense.

NB,

Worst and spineless performances ever is completely OTT!
It was poor, we lacked the guile to break down a poor but gutsy Hartlepool and it made for a lousy spectacle granted but I'd never describe it as spineless.

I think AS has been part of a exciting period in Bees history on and off the park, he was a brave appointment after some very poor ones and despite my concerns, by and large he's
delivered. He never promised us free flowing football, he's evolved a team that improves year on year until now..............whether he's a nice chap or not is irrelevant, is he the best man available and able to achieve the 5 year plan is. So far in his tenure he's had one blip of 4 games at the start of this season, and yet he's being castigated for everything from the dug outs, no onions to bullying Richard Lee who many on here wrote off after two friendlies and now he's Gordon Banks. Cutting a long story shorter, some don't like him but that doesn't make him a bad manager, so far his record suggests he's a good one.
so far in 3 seasons we

Andy Scott

It was a disgrace, many have told me this but I am more than happy to unhappily type it.

It was a naive performance, not a disgrace. What is strikingly obvious to me is that we are a far improved team when the opposition look to take the game to us. We react by raising the tempo and making it difficult for them to play. The characteristics of the performancee against Hull, Wednesday and Everton have been very similar; play at a high tempo, play further up the pitch, get in amongst the opposition and get the ball wide quickly leaving the wingers to launch our attacks.

Where we've struggled is when teams don't come at us and set out to stifle our game. Hartlepool brought little ambition with them and we lacked the guile to break them down. Had we got an early goal, it would've changed the way they had to play and I think we'd have benefitted as a result.

This aspect is possibly where Andy struggles most. He's not yet learnt how to adapt the style of play or formation to combat teams who come looking for a point and we're slightly predictable and easy to nulify as a result. It's frustrating but just as the squad are still finding their feet so is he as a manager. Ultimately in employing a young and inexperienced manager you have to be prepared for him to learn "on the job" as it were. He's shown in the past that he's capable of solving deficiencies in personnel or performances, demonstrated already this season with the marked improvement of the defensive unit and ultimately I have faith that he'll learn to be more flexible in his choice of tactics and formation. That will take time however and I believe his achievements over the past two seasons have earnt him a degree of patience from us as fans in the meantime.

There was only one team looking like getting an early goal, it wasn't us and thankfully the post and Pim saved us.
An early goal for us is ridiculous as we spend 20 minutes chasing shadows and then sometimes play a bit ourselves, the emphasis is on sometimes with that last sentence.

Ok, accepted. I would have been better to say "after a poor first twenty minutes had we got a goal........." You're quite right in that we didn't start well, and that has been a familar trend in matches, although I would lay the blame for such lethargy at the feet of the players rather than the manager. I stand by the rest of my post though.

I've commented on this a few times now but we've been like that for a couple of years. The Andy Scott "it worked for me" 4-4-2 formation, with two holding MF and two wingers, works well when we're allowed space (and have the right players) but he perhaps needs to consider a more 'battering ram' approach at home to massed defences.

I'd like to see a 4-1-3-2, with KOC as the covering 1 and maybe Adams, Dave and Wood as a tighter unit playing further forward. Massed defence will stifle any wing play, so the answer is playing in numbers... actually close passing!

We had a good start under Leroy, didn't we? This is from memory but up until Chesterfield away we had won our first two and drawn a few more.
I was taking the piss with 54 years but I reckon we must have had a worst start this season than poor old Leroy's start. I hope we don't begin to have the same middle.

That first sentence is silly mate. I am happy because i see the continuing improvement. We have stopped conceding and with a bit of better luck would have won at Swindon and Rovers and we should never have lost to Walsall. We were outstanding against Wednesday and have won 4 cup ties. Apart from Rochdale we turned the performances around long ago imho.

This is a very reasonable post but do you really believe the last bit? Aren't most of the AS critics on here pretty much dyed in the wool in their loathing? Most appear in droves after every defeat and then disappear again after a good run of results, or an outstanding one like Tuesday's.

I don't think they are. There's a few who obviously hate the guy, but most people criticising on here have been making valid points - some of which AS has then gone on to change himself. The problem is (t'internet effect as CBU would say) that it all just gets caricatured into moaners vs defenders of the faith.

I'd refer people back to the MA maxim (it's been used against the moaners) - you don't pop the pills after one defeat, and you don't pop the champagne after one win. Tuesday was massive, and I hope it kick starts us. But we still have serious work to do in the league, and AS knows that.

I wpuld like to have an idea of what AS team will turn up tonight. We go there in the dark, will we be good or dog sh*t?
I've never known a time at GP where we are so Jeckyl and Hyde, Callaghan entertained even when we lost, Perryman's mob played a bit of football, Wally's team were sh*te and the football was normally the same, at least with Leroy and Fitz we knew what to expect. MA's teams worked their knackers off, Webb's played football and worked, Holder's went long but had some class players in it, McKlintock's football was as boring as he was.
I don't expect to be like Chelsea and win every bloody game but it would be nice to have an idea of what sort of performance to expect, AS and his team are confusing animals.

Give the bloke a f'kin break.
We've just knocked Evertons first team out of the Cup.
A Cup they wanted to win.

Expect a dull game tonight, those players will still be aching, if we win or draw, then that's a good result after a busy week. Charlton is the game
that we should judge.

Go back and look at them and tell me whether you still think most were making 'valid' criticisms. All completely entitled to their opinion of course, but largely inspired by personal dislke nonetheless. As for your final point, yes, absolutely agree: results in the league have simply not been good enough. What evidence is there that AS can do something about this? In my opinion there is lots

Now, this is what I call 'valid criticism'! We can actually be quite good at close passing in the top third of the pitch, so this might work.

Agree to disagree I think. For me, it's just that the two extremes are as bad as each other - I find the over reaction to understandable criticism/irritation more annoying than the doomsayers to be honest. I get annoyed with people moaning at matches, but not on here.

And I do think that AS will do something about it. A lot of money has been put in this season, and that makes his position more difficult, but I'm sure he'd rather have it that way round.

l believe we turned the corner by signing Hamer and returning to clean sheets. We have a very strong back unit indeed. Lee has come of age and so has Karleigh. l have no doubt our league form will improve but maybe not against Leyton Orient which is probably too soon.
AS stated at the beginning of the season about a cup run after always going out in the opening rounds. The win against Everton made me feel 3" taller all week.
Let's enjoy the success but the league results will matter come Xmas
