Apology from BFC Needed

My mother died of cancer. Many (most) on here will have been touched by this horrible illness and if they have seen anyone fight it - whether to win or lose - they will know how truly awful it is and God willing, those who are suffering at this time have the strength to fight it.

Last night, a 15 year old boy posted something silly on here about yesterday's match. He was rounded on by all right thinking supporters and it was decided by us that his posting rights are withdrawn..

However as a result of that post, Mark Chapman, a Brentford director and Bees United elected board member called this site a cancer. I think that suggesting that is as ill-considered and offensive as you can possibly get and I would like the club to issue an apology immediately - not through Twitter but on this site.

Apology from BFC Needed

Surely General Bees Discussion :thetruth:

However as you're here, I shall opine :thetruth:

It's an unusual metaphor to describe the postings of a child on a football website no doubt. However not sure if the club have a case to answer here. If the club do can we also rope SNAP in for that rhythm is a dancer song? that always pissed me right off as well.

Apology from BFC Needed

It is a comment that should not have been made but I think he was using the word cancer in the context of 'an evil influence' as defined in the dictionary. My Mum, Dad and Wife have all died of cancer so I am more then aware of these horrible diseases.

Apology from BFC Needed

I think that we should be told the facts about GPG and rebus as to what the current beef is really about....

Seems to me a little over the top demanding and the club apologise for such a comment. Rebus wasn't aiming his cancer comment at individuals just using it as a way of describing his feeling about GPG. I am sure we have all heard politicians, football managers using similar words to describe the London riots or the money spent on wages in the game.

Lets get a grip people.

Clearly some beef between rebus and GPG so let's have all the facts before we start a witch hunt for no good reason as far as I can see it

Apology from BFC Needed

Perhaps he will resign again so we can hold another election, money being no object.

For someone who used this place so effectively to originally gain popularity and election, that's some toy being thrown about these days.

:imwith: i'd be more angry at him tarring us all with the same brush then the use of the word cancer, if i gave a sh*t what he thought that is.

My rant against him has obviously been deleted. Which is fair enough and understandable. I'll just ask him for an apology face to face when if I see him in the Braemar Rd forecourt.

There are better things to be getting worked up over than someones comments on twitter. Reality check please.

When you have a family member and close friend both currently dealing with terminal cancer you tend to get annoyed at these types of comments. So with all due respect crawl back under your rock.................

Woosh, I wasn't expecting a visit from abee over this. I suspect that this thread will deliver :pop:

I think the malignancy of Tom's views was a point of agreement twixt twitterer Mark and the GPG overlords.

My post has now been moved to make it seem that I have started a new thread on whether 'pessimists' should be at GP on Saturday. The 'new' thread title dimishes the debate and is I suppose designed to take the sting out of the original argument and transfer it to a 'mundane' thread which will fizzle out in short order. I would at least have appreciated the courtesy of not having a post of mine utilised to start a nonsense debate which no doubt some wag will want turned into a 'poll' before the morning is out.

I think Mark should apologise, but I don't think the club has any need to.

Twitter name is MarkBFC and his profile makes it clear he is a BFC director. I would be happy for it to be pointed out that the view is that of an individual, not the club.

Apology from BFC Needed

I think most who view his profile assume his views are representive of The Club & Board, given no disclaimer.

l think thats the best way to resolve your issue with him.

Rightly or wrongly it is a very common phrase these days describing something as a cancer.

If you honestly think he said it meaning to use the phrase as an insult to people who have experienced it at close quarters then I think you are being extremely unfair on him.

For all you know he may well have know someone who has died from cancer himself. It doesn't mean he is belittling the disease, merely using language that effectively describes something that eats away at something from the inside and destroys it.

Personally I don't like the phrase but for him to apologise for it because he is a director of BFC seem somewhat draconian and an unnecessary attack on free speech.

I think calling something a cancer, and one of the people involved having a relative suffering from Cancer is... incidental at best. You can't excise (no potentially bad taste pun intended) language which is perfectly in context simply because it has a bad connotation in another context.

Or should Uwe ask for an apology, because he also beat cancer? Fine, maybe Rebus should apologise for generalising, but not for his choice of words.

Apology from BFC Needed

I will answer your question by saying that were I still on the BFC board then I would be raising the subject of Mark Chapman's 'twitters' at the next board meeting

And what would you be saying about that at that board meeting?

Apology from BFC Needed

The GPG Website includes a variety of views that includes Tom's. In my previous posts, as regards Tom's comments I outlined that they erred on the negative and IMO didn't appreciate the efforts and results of BFC team over the last 6 games. I do feel that whilst it was unwise of Mark Chapman to get involved, his comments about cancer were in the context that it was an evil influence or corruption spreading uncontrollably (as shown in the Oxford Dictionary) which again I feel can be inflammatory.

The sad thing is we should all be pulling together at this point in the season.

Do you mean before or after I raised the subject of a Bees United director asking/telling a 15yo supporter to stay away from Griffin Park?

Calm down Lads, you should both know better!!!!

The comment about 'cancer' was made on rebus's Twitter account not on the GPG. His Twitter is his personal account. The word is an acceptable - if OTT useage - in the context he was using it in, i.e. a evil spreading corruption. When I received the tweet - it was RT'd to me - I thought it was OTT but not some deliberate & terrible insult to anyone whose ever had cancer or their relatives. I lost someone dear to me from cancer. I suspect everyone on the GPG has.

So whilst it was a bit OTT I don't think rebus owes an apology to anyone. The club certainly doesn't. He could be more tactful but as he's won two elections with a communication style that can be best described as blunt I think we know what we're getting.

I don't actually agree with rebus on a number of things but I think the reaction to a single tweet is a tad OTT itself.

It was a tweet I sent to rebus that he was responding btw just to clarify. Part of a Twitter conversation I was having with him (and others)

The GPG is the home of over reaction.
This thread is no different.

Rebus got ticked off at one poster on a site he doesn't post on anymore and GPG supremos got ticked off at comments one person (Rebus aka markbfc) made about the one poster on the GPG

We play Notts County on Saturday - let's focus on that :hat:

I agree. Let's for goodness sake sort this out before it becomes an issue that is bigger than Brentford Football Club itself, which is the primart reason we are on here in the first place - isn't it?

if i gave a sh*t what he thought that is.

that's what I told nana, who indeed gives a sh*t.. I just recently lost my mother-in-law to cancer, a few months back he called the gpg family site...:(

Good post, the drama that comes with this forum is unreal, its like a kids playground sometimes.

Apology from BFC Needed

i dont think it has anything to do with BFC...best just to stop following him and his irrelevant posts about where he lives and Paul Wellor and follow Mark Devlin instead...the gpg is a terrific forum for Bees fans but not all posts need to be taken so seriously

Knowing Mark well, he really would mean it to insult anyone who has lost someone dear to themselves through the wretched illness that is cancer. Perhaps an ill advised word to use, but not one he would have meant to offend anyone.

I would agree with that. However, he has called 5,000 Brentford supporters collectively "a cancer".......and that isn't very nice.

Mark has been active is trying to get people banned or posts removed and it seems he has reacted as we haven't acceeded to all his requests. He is now running what amounts to a campaign against all that use the GPG.

If we have 5,000 supporters, lets hope they all come to the game on Saturday ! We might even get near a crowd of 6,000

Fine. You asked so I'll tell you. First of all and to declare my interest (or rather lack of it) I am not on any social network sites.........I have neither the time nor inclination to bore everybody sh*tless explaining the details of my day or moaning that the 65 bus I'm waiting for is late or whether Bob Dylan's latest CD is lousy. I don't do 'Twitter' 'Facebook' 'Friends Re-United' or any of the others but I accept that I'm in a minority and many people believe that the rest of the world is fascinated by their lives and how they live them.

If I were on the BFC board I would be telling my co-directors that it's about time Bees United got a grip because it is a BU problem. Mark Chapman is on the BFC board solely and simply because the BU board put him there and if a majority of the BU board don't like the way he conducts himself as a BFC director then they can remove him as a BFC director at the next BU board meeting . I would add that I'll look for it on the Agenda for the next BU board meeting and I'll be interested to read on their website how the vote went but BU doesn't seem to bother with that stuff anymore. I believe that both you and Mark Chapman diminish yourselves with your current childish swipes at each other (about which I don't give a toss) but also the Club and Bees United and about which I do. I wouldn't put up with either of you for two minutes in your present moods if I had any influence at BFC or BU but I'm a non-player now and it's up to others to say 'enough is enough'.
I would also be telling the BFC board that in my view ideally nobody connected with the Club and that goes for BU and BFC directors, players and officials including executives should involve anything to do with BFC on their Twitter accounts but if they still insist on sharing their lives with the rest of the world and using their association with either or both of BFC and BU in their Twitter cv's then I don't expect to see any references to the Club on their individual Twitter accounts. Any breaches and I will take measures that will astound them.

That's it.......meeting closed.

It's about time directors of both BU AND BFC behaved in a responsable manner and stopped using the GPG for a slanging match. We should acting as one and getting behind the team. I

This thread goes a long way to prove what MC was saying (clumsily) is true.

We are doing fairly well at the moment, people are finally starting to come together again after years of in-fighting.

So naturally cue uproar and division in the camp over one mans fairly innoculous comments on a social network site.

Still several people have had an agenda against him for a while, and I guess they couldn't wait to get a few digs in.

It certainly seems that some rather entrenched enmities are being played out on here, and for those of us who are not in the know about the reasons for them they are frankly rather boring. In terms of the substance of this thread, the consensus seems generally that a mountain is being made out of a mole hill and I would go along with this - and yes for what it's worth I too have cancer in the family.

I'll take this one and bite, I can't stand rebus, I really can't stand him but I don't have an agenda against him, my life is far too simple to have agendas. I have a wife, 2 kids, a house and a job with a football team to follow and have little time for agendas. rebus keep putting his foot in it and his lot keep trying to dig him out, that's great but I'd hate it if my mates kept having to keep telling the world how nice I am and that I don't mean what I say etc etc. Agenda is a great word by the way as it's a veiled word for an unexplained nothing, how can I cloud someone, I know I'll say they have an agenda.
I am now going back to enjoying my football club, working out a way that my son (lad's holiday) can possibly get to GP after landing at East Midlands airport at 11.30 on Saturday, to explain to my daughter that a ghost didn't open her wardrobe doors last night even though we keep hearing bump and that her Great Great Aunt died in the house (spooky but I don't believe).....some of us have lives that don't include agendas against rebus or following him or any other plum on a social network site.

You are not alone I can assure you, I also don't get these social network sites, And I have no interest whatsoever, what a complete and utter waste of valuable time, I have far more important things in my life to be getting on with, (wife, daughters, granddaughters, BFC, golf, retirement, the list is endless) I even have trouble texting, it's much quicker and polite to acually pick up the phone and speak to people.
