Yes they were which was, I have to say a massive surprise, their defence were particularly shocking.
Liverpool could have easily score 8. When the scousers attacked, It was like a hot knife through butter.

During which time they built and paid for a new stadium at a cost of 400 million and still maintained their usual champions league place that ranks higher than winning an f a cup league cup milk cup zenith trophy Jp trophy charity shield div 1 div2 championship title ect last time I looked.Oh for us to have just a small slice of this failure.

Always fascinated how the Arsenal fans moan about Venger. Ok he has not picked up any silverware in recent years yet he has teams that play wonderful football, they finish in top 4 every season and get Champions league football, have a fantastic stadium and are debt free

Agree with you and would expect Matthew Benham would love to end up with Arsenals model.Amongst these trophy winners during Wengers failed years are Birmingham City Wigan Athletis and Portsmouth bet their are loads of Gooners looking at them with envy lol.The fact that Wenger has achieved the target of every top club in the Prem to. Get into the champions league(a long way ahead of the FA cup and league cup)makes him a very successfull manager as well as a waiting list of tens of thousands trying to get a ST.The media love to dig out Wenger especially Talksport who prefer the Redknap model for running a football club.

So do I. Wenger essentially sacrificed personal success (he could have left arsenal and undoubtedly won trophies elsewhere which would have increased his reputation and his bank balance) but instead he has been loyal and built a club. He may never end up with the same amount of trophies as Fergie or Mourinho but in many ways he has done a better and tougher job than both of them.

I can see their season ending within the next couple of weeks. Another poor league result would hit their league chances - where they must, at best, be 3rd favourites (arguably 4th, behind Liverpool) - they must be outsiders v Bayern and the Cup game v Liverpool will be challenging after yesterday (unless Liverpool decide to focus on Champ Lge qualification) and omit a few players.
Unless my memory is playing up, I seem to remember us having a similar spell in the early 90s when we lost the QF at Liverpool sold Andy Sinton, went out of the 'JPT' (no idea of its name then) and saw our league form slip within 2-3 weeks

Surprising as it may seem, Arsenal together with Man. U. could well miss out on next year's Champions League. Also it may well take them more than a season to get back in. Arsenal really have no excuses as they have the money to compete on the big stage, but simply refuse to spend it. For them a successful season is to finish in the top four. Well this year their lack of ambition could well cost them dearly. They have been flirting with danger for the past five/six years and may well be caught out this time around.
Having said that it's nice to see the new breed of managers like at Everton and Liverpool, show what can be done. Personally I think Roberto M would have been a better bet than Moyes for United and could probably do a very good job for Arsenal. Won't happen, but a nice thought.

Do they really have the money to compete? Going head to head on transfer spending against Man City, Chelsea, Man Utd (and even Liverpool and Spurs who take it in turns to spend big) would be inevitably a losing battle. Spending whatever they have wont be the answer to their problems.
Lack of ambition? No one said that before Christmas when they were top. The rest of their games are winnable, I think they will finish 4th and they should win the FA cup which wont have been a bad season at all. Arsenal are trapped (like many other teams) by the nature of the the Premier league.

They have never replaced Viera and that is why they will never be real title contenders .. They have amazing technical players like Arteta but when the going gets tough these players hide . I watched their game today and they simply rolled over. !!A big factor in Man City's form this year has been Toure who has simply been unplayable . He can run with the ball , score goals and has an amazing physical presence . What Wenger would do to have a player like that .

More like what Wenger could do to have a player like that is invest in your squad and not hesitate in the transfer market.
Viera has proved irreplaceable to a point, Ya Ya Toure being the obvious, but Denis Bergkamp has never been replaced and never will.

Too many ball players not enough ball winners in midfield, and a distinctly average front line. Wengers spending (when he has spent) in the last few years has been bizarre.

Only up to a point. They haven't spent big on Transfers (not Wenger's way), but they've long had a v.big squad, on v.big wages. For example, Johann Djouou (Jou-who?) was on £50k per week whilst not being anywhere near the 1st team. Meanwhile, when Spurs and Arsenal's Annual Results came out in the same week a couple of years ago, it emerged that the Arsenal player wage bill was £51m more than Spurs. For a squad of, say, 25 players, that works out at £40k per week more for every single one (if evenly balanced, which it won't be). (Arsenal were 8th, with €100m less received. Since the Emirates opened, AW hasn't had to sell so readily as before to balance the books).
As for spending on Transfer Fees, I reckon there are three big reasons why AW hasn't really splashed out. First, he made his name for finding rough diamonds from Europe/Africa for small fees, then polishing them, ready to be sold for big fees. And even though the other big clubs have got wise and now scout in the same markets, I'd guess he doesn't want to admit that he's lost his USP.
Second, The Arse Board is split between 2 Billionaires - Kronke with a majority holding, but Usmanov (sp?) with a substantial minority stake. Kronke may be reluctant to authorise big spending in case Usmanov then gains control (and reaps the benefit), and Usmanov won't want to (until he has majority control).
Third, until recently, AW was the highest paid Manager in the Prem - i.e. at £7.5m p.a (= £140k per week), he was on more than Ferguson! Therefore if he were to demand big money for transfers, and it didn't work out (at least in the early days), then the Board might start asking why a top dollar Manager wasn't producing a top dollar team. Meanwhile, so long as they were qualifying for the CL, the money was rolling in and the Accounts were healthy, then his position was untouchable. (Remember, the Board is no longer made up of Businessmen/Fans like Dein, but pure Businessmen like Kronke).
No-one expected they'd be top at Xmas - that was seen as being way above expectation. And it didn't last. They haven't looked like Title winners in over a decade.
With a 60k stadium just about paid for, London revenues and FFP, Arsenal are by no means "trapped" - it's the likes of Chelsea (who now have to sell to buy), Man City (screwed if they can't overturn FFP), Man U (need to spend maybe £100m+ just to rebuild the team) and even Liverpool (big debt and outdated stadium) who should be crapping themselves.

The media especially Talkshite hate Wenger,for those taking the piss out of the club remembr they have had to make do without 5 key players since Xmas some on here would be crying their eyes out if we lost just Clayton for half the season if you added Forshaw Douglas Mac and Bidwell they would be suicidal. Some will argue that you should have a bigger squad but what players as good as Witshire Ramsey Ozil Walcott and Oxlade - chamberlain will want to sit on the bench.

Well said Bill and credit to Arsene Wenger for not using the same argument - many other managers would have done. Even with those players though, they'd still be a couple of players short in my opinion but they'd be a lot closer than the team they're putting out at the moment.

Be interesting if they win the FA cup and don't make CL how the sheep in the media who have been going on about them not winning anything will play it.After all a few years back Talkshite stated Arry WON Spurs a CL place.I would love my club to have a stadium that had 60000 fans every home game and 20000 waiting list for STs and in profit,Watch the media this week put the boot in to Wenger.

In fact, only two clubs in the Prem list a bigger squad, Fulham and WHU - the former a basket-case and the latter with a Manager long-known for surrounding himself with players and support staff.

Hartson said on MOTD2 last night he thinks the fans would be happier with the Cup, just to get the "nine years without a trophy" thing off their back. I get the feeling that even though it's the media who have built up the "X years without a trophy" line into a cliche, if Arsenal were to win the Cup and fail to qualify for the CL, they will give it large and hammer Wenger with "Arsenal have failed to qualify for the CL for the first time since 96/97" headlines, to the point where the Cup win will have been meaningless...a bit like when a side wins the JPT but gets relegated.
