I see that the Eagles are playing Freemantle at the Oval in October. Does anyone else ever go to this? A good day out :sorted: , although it seems strange not having a Victorian team - could result in a low crowd

I love Aussie Rules (wish Sky would show the highlights earlier in the week)! Been to the Oval for the last two games, but it depends on the Bees fixtures. Bees come first, no question.

Doesn't matter who the teams are... it's just an excuse for the Aussies to get together, get ****ed and have a good time. I quickly learned to take my own beer rather than buy inside. ;) And it's always amusing when they start to invade the field in the 4th quarter. :sorted:

I'm taking the youngster and a couple of friends. I've only ever seen a glimpse of Aussie rules on TV but I reckon it's got to be a good afternoon. There's an exhibition match plus the main feature. Doors open at 12.30 and KO of the main match is 2.40. The exhibition match is a good idea since I'm sure I won't be the only one there who has barely a clue about the rules.

There's rules  Can't be that many for an Aussie invented game.

Always makes me laugh, seems you are allowed to tackle someone anyway you like, when I used to watch it on channel 4 all the convict tw*ts had shoulder length hair! Guess how they got tackled! or has it all changed and is BL right behind the times????

When a team score's please shout to the referee/umpire,
" how bigs your di*k "

He will gladly show you.

No wonder they are always happy. :)

My dear fellow, I shall of course endeavour to do so! I am most grateful for the advice.

I think that's the only thing I know about Aussie Rules.

Went to an Aussie Rules game while I was in Perth a few years ago. Can I suggest that anyone who goes a) takes binoculars and b) a good, long book. Nearly made Basketball and gridiron look exciting.

I think it's a combination of netball and rugby league.

What's to understand. You kick, you catch, everyone runs away from you and if you kick the ball between two flagpoles, it's a goal. If you miss, it's still something or other. Occasionally the umpires take throwins for you.

Perfect for commercial TV because there are so many scores, it gives them the chance to show loads of ads.

Seems to me like a version of 'gainers', a game I used to play with mates when I was 11. Only difference we didn't get 40,000+ to watch

Backwards though, which makes them look like idiots, which is sort of entertaining. :owusu:

Aussie Rules is awesome. Im going next Saturday with 20 others, gonna be superb. Watched the grand final live last Saturday and loved it. Shame my boys lost tho :(

Aussie Rules

I have just spent the last week celebrating the Sydney Swans winning their first ever Premiership (or at least since they were South Melbourne - perhaps the inspiration for Milton Keynes Dons some 23 years ahead).

The game is best watched live rather than on television as there is a lot of action off the ball (as in football). There is an official internet site www.afl.com.au where I am sure a copy of the rules can be found.

You may think Aussie Rules is complicated but we have an even more esoteric sport where Australia plays Ireland at a combination of Aussie Rules and Gaelic rules. I think there's a couple of games coming up in Australia later this month - details will be on www.afl.com.au. It may even be the case that it'll be shown in some of London's every increasing number of Irish and Aussie pubs.

That's great news SSB. I was there when the Sydney Swans first started up in this (used to be) Melbourne dominated sport. After initial success and good crowds they went of the boil and the support dropped.

Has it come back now with this success?

Who did they beat in the final?

Hope it was a Melbourne team. rofl

That is the wierdest bit though. Sydney had all these melbourne fans supporting them because the team was originally south melbourne. When I found out what happened to Fitzroy and South Melbourne I couldn't believe that blood wasn't spilt. I know one old geezer who still spits blood about it but his name is "grumpy", everyone else seems to be quite comfy with a 'football' club not just moving outside the M25 but to a different timezone.

Congrats on the win anyway Mr Sydneyswansbee  It is definitely a better game live

Melbourne pretty much adopted the Sydney Swans though. It was pretty odd seeing Melbourne supporting Sydney.

Although as my man Grumpy pointed out "you didn't see any ***** supporting ****ing fitzroy (now brisbane) when they won three times in a row, you pommie ****, **** off............." :)

I shall be in Block 14, wearing a Brentford scarf if it's chilly. The boy will almost certainly insist on wearing his England cricket shirt rather than his Bees kit, but I will obviously try to convince him that this would be... er... somewhat inadvisable.

Aussie Rules

When I went to see an game - Essendon v Brisbane 2002 - the problem I had was that I found it difficult to see / anticipate how things were going to happen (if you see what I mean).

I was talking to a couple of Essendon supporters and I couldn't believe that they accepted all the local grounds closing down as main venues / games being played all over the place (timewise) and they just said look at the facilities. I find the whole franchising thing difficult to take as well.

Aussie Rules

In answer to your questions Idaho - the Swans also made the final in 1996 but were beaten then. This year they beat West Coast Eagles (from Perth) in the Final. The Swans knocked out St Kilda - the last Melbourne team - the week before. Part of Sydney's recent success seems to be down to their manager/coach who seems to be doing an excellent job in his first post. He was a Swans player until a few years ago and seems to have some similarities to Martin Allen.

I was working in South Melbourne in 1980 (although not a supporter) when the news came through that they were to be moving up to Sydney and I remember the outcry. However the other option was for them to go bust as they were in deep financial trouble. At least South Melbourne stayed intact whereas Fitzroy had to combine with Brisbane and have lost their separate identity.

I agree with Downbeat Bee that it's a shame the old grounds have closed down especially as most teams were based in older suburbs where there are some good pub crawls. Although, of course, it's quite OK to have a beer while watching a game.

The International Rules Australia v. Ireland first leg is being played tomorrow evening (Friday) in Perth so it will be around Friday lunch time UK time. I don't know if it's being shown in the UK - we get delayed coverage here in Brisbane. As I mentioned previously it's supposed to be combination of Aussie Rules and Gaelic football. Spherical ball, rectangular pitch, scoring is 6 points for a goal, 3 points for an over and 1 for a behind - the rest of the rules are open to discussion.

If anyone wants a Brisbane Lions shirt I've got one, worn once when the person who bought it for me came round  In perfect nick, and miles too big for 'lil me.

No it would appear as though Setanta are not showing the game over here which is a pity. :( As for rules............what rules? :D

Aussie Rules

The rules seem to be made up during the game but luckily there are two refs/umpires, one from Ireland and one from Australia, both on the pitch at the same time. I saw the game on Aussie TV and the commentators didn't seem to kinow the rules either. Sorry to say Scratchy that I think it's going to be very difficult for your boys to win the series after Friday's thrashing. At least Australia may have one international trophy now they've lost the ashes and are likely to lose the trinations rugby league.

Anyone keeping an eye on the AFL finals this year? Adelaide getting spanked by the Hawks today was a shocker. My money is on (it’s not!) a Collingwood v Geelong Grand Final. Contemplating watching the GF in the Vauxhall Food & Beer Garden on the 27th Sept at 5:30am, then onto the Man U game at 12:30. 🦘

Yes, that's their lot. Last of the semi finals tomorrow, then we'll know the last four for the preliminary finals (too many finals!).

Aussie Rules

I record the games, and when I can't sleep at night, which is usual. I watch the games. No way can you call it boring. This is a happy medium with my wife - she doesn't like it to much, she is all over hockey and CFL.
I'm still getting my head around the rules. Not following a specific team, I just enjoy the game.

Aussie Rules

My team the West Coast Eagles have been sh*te for years now but this season was an all time low even for them.

Went to one of the games played at the Oval around 2008 which was a class day out - as we know there are loads of Aussies in London and they like a beer so the pre match was quality banter.

Aaah, WCE my team too. It was never going to be a great season, but 1 win and 23 losses was grim.

It's a shame that the Oval games don't take place any more. I'm sure they would be well supported, although whoever was in charge of putting on the UK games previously was terrible at publicising them.

I watched a game in Fremantle and the four people next to me had driven non stop from Melbourne. That’s over 2000 miles.

I call bullshit they did!!! How did they refuel without stopping

Aussie Rules

Brisbane Lions fan here... Not a glory hunter - first watched them in 1996 when I stayed in Brisbane for a few months, enjoyed their three-peat between 2001 and 2004 then followed them through a long period in the doldrums before last year's title and another shot this year.

Love the fact that game is so low profile over here. I can record most of their games on TNT and watch them the next day or even later and easily avoid the score. I'll be recording Saturday's Grand Final to watch after I get home from the Bees game v Man Utd too.

Aussie Rules

I also call bullshit as why would victorians drive 2000 miles to attend a game at Fremantle - home of the local WAFL team South Fremantle - not even an AFL team - DId they support Peel Thunder or some sh*t?

Complete rubbish

Fremantle played at Subico or the WACA before Optus stadium - unless of course they drove 2000 to attend a woman’s game - even more unbelievable.

Lair Lair pants on fire 🔥

I agree although it is just as unlikely they went to see the other WAFL club that play in Fremantle - East Freo

To use an Aussie expression the chances are Buckley's,

It was Juneish 2013. The Melbourne supporters wore blue and white if that helps. I've got a photo somewhere. I travelled down the coast from Darwin but not specifically for the game. Away from the East coast Aussies drive ridiculous distances. Hitch hiking around Oz in the 70s you could spend a couple of days with the same lift.
