He was playing right back against reading.

Mackie and Osborne were the centre-backs against Reading. Starosta was the right back who seemed to polarise opinions, depending on whether or not you think a Fourth Division defender should be able to deny a Premiership winger even the slightest opening.

Ben Starosta thread

Against Reading,Basey at left back looked steadier than Starosta at right back. First impressions are not always reliable with youngsters, it was not a game where the defence gained many credits.

Ben Starosta thread

KOC, Mousinho, Osborne, Dark, Pead (when fit). Tillen's even played there as has Brooker!! ;)

must see KOC as a centre mid, Moose not comfortable there, Osborne not comfortable anywhere, Dark is one for the future and Pead is injured..

Ben Starosta thread

Hope we haven't signed him, it's got to be a centre back on loan + Gary Smith.

Ben Starosta thread

hmm,not our number one priority by all accounts.Maybe Smith has rejected his paltry offer and Kev will now play CM?As I posted else where if all Moose does is break up play in midfield maybe he can play a cb role?Butcher wasnt quick in his day was he?In some vid clips he gets done by pace.I guess he must of had a quicker player along side him? What was the England back four in those days?

;) If true, given the quality he will be facing he should do OK. Do hope this does not stop us signing Smith tho.

Although really after 5 minutes you could see Hunt was taking the piss down that wing and should have had someone man-marking him. Tactical frailty. IMO we need management seats a few rows up in the Braemar where TB and AS can better observe what's going on as it's a lot more difficult down at pitch level, although it could take a few days for TB to get up those steps.

Please Please don't let this be true, if it is and we sign him over giving Gary Smith a contract we deserve everything we get next season.

Would prefer Jordon Robertson over the Right Back

Club level it was Russell Osman who was in no way a whippet. Internationals take your pick - Mark Wright, Dave Watson, Alvin Martin, Terry Fenwick, Des Walker.

Well, Smith is still training with us as far as I know.

What if SUFC are helping with the wages big time?? So although RB is not a top priority, he could well be able to play RB or RW?

We desperately need a loan signing striker and Smith to sign.

As for KOC in the team anywhere:
"NO!"

Kev probably doesn't want to be anywhere near it anyway at the moment.

FFSAKE. The lad has just lost his mother who had been ill for a long time, and you stil continue the abuse :nono:

What's most interesting to me is that if Starosta does sign, it means that TB has signed two full-backs who both seem to have attained reputations for putting in good crosses and are seen as good attacking backs. If you look at the shape of the team so far in pre-season it's largely been three solid midfielders without no obvious wide men.

Maybe that's what he's looking for primarily from his full-backs and hence the reason why he might see Kevin O'Connor as more of a midfielder?

I also don't think he sees Mousinho as a first-choice in midfield at the moment so with Pead's injury and O'Connor's understable absence at present I think that's where TB will be looking to strengthen as well.

Even if Sarosta signs, that still only makes a first team squad of something like nineteen players so I suspect there's still space for another to come in?

OK me old china, where did you glean this bit of information from :fishing:

Ben Starosta thread

For what is now years and years of trials, Kevin O'C has proved time and again that he's not a central midfielder. He was almost on his way out of GP with Mark Williams (another "no position he can make his own") until MA put him at right back and he flourished. Remember all the threads about managers from the Championship down to GP to watch him play, and how desperately folks on this board were calling for him not to be sold at any price?
Any delusion that he'll suddenly come good at anywhere but RB, despite ALL the years of evidence, is just that. Tell Kevin he's the right back and to pretend it's 2005 again.

Ben Starosta thread

Haven't seen Starosta, so this isn't any reflection on how good he might be. If we've got him for next to nothing, that's fine, but if we are paying an "average" (by our standards) wage for him, it would be a strange choice in terms of the positions where we have cover.

As potential RB, we have 2 experienced players in O'Connor and Pead, one with limited experience in Osborne, a utility player in Mousinho and a kid in Dark - I don't think we have that much cover in any other position.

Midfield, striker and CB (in that order, in my view) would all be higher priorities

Good try Arse Face but it doesn't wash I'm afraid, the appearance given is that you weren't talking about a game or two in your posts and you would have been better off saying "whoops, forgot about that !" instead imho ! :nono:

Firstly he isn't a 4th division defender he is a Polish U-20 international who was at a premiership club last season and maybe should know how to defend a little better when faced with a tricky winger. It's not about Hunt getting the better of him, which we could expect, but how he let him. He showed him far to much space and allowed Hunt to move either side of him with ease.
He did however look quite good on the ball and going forward, so maybe his defending was just an off day with the addition that he had no support from a wide midfield player tracking back either.

Ben Starosta thread

Could he play a little central midfield then? :fishing:

If that was the impression given, then I apologise.

Right side midfield in a 4-4-2 possibly.

According to his profile on SUFC site he did start out as a winger so maybe TB does have ideas of playing him there rather than at RB.

He certainly looked better going forward against Reading & managed to put in a couple of half-decent crosses.

Ben Starosta thread

Really? In a Bees shirt? That's almost unprecidented! :sorted:

Well...I did mean relatively speaking, when compared to defending like ;)

Don't worry though, I don't think he's going to set a precedent or anything!

If Starosta does sign on loan, and I hope he does, he will be a very useful addition to the squad. I’m very sure that Butcher will use him at right back with an option for playing on the right side of midfield. From what I’ve seen he has excellent stamina and can put in some decent crosses so this to me is promising.

Incidentally I think Pead and O’Connor will be used in midfield this season, with one of them playing on the right hand side or perhaps alternating the role for different games depending on form. I’ve heard from other fans that Pead is pretty useful in the centre of the park.
Therefore Mousinho and Dark will provide the cover for Starosta, but hey I could be completely wrong.

Yes, but we are going to be playing in the fourth division this year, not the premiership or an u-20 international tournament!

I think this is definitely the quality of player we should bee looking to loan. Young, skillful and deperate for first team football.

The problem is of course that RB is not high on our list of requirements long term. If he signs a one month loan while were missing Pead and Kev then fine. If Pead and Kev are seen as centre midfielders then get him in for longer. But please lets not get him in at the expense of a loan centre half which I think everyone agrees is desperately required!

I dont know if anythings is actually going to happen, but when it was announced Chelsea reserves were going to play at GP rumour was rife on the GPG that we would therefore be getting a couple of their players in on loan. If we need to find a bit of space in the budget for these loans I would prefer it if we didnt waste money on Starosa now.

Also does anyone know how many loans we are allowed per season and when the window is/isnt for these loans?

I hope you are right, however Chester didn't think so last season when they sent him back.
I agree we should be looking at the loan market and Butcher obviously is and I'm prepared to give Sarosta a chance as I've only seen him the once. However as you say RB is possibly not a priority and I would prefer a young quick CB and a more mobile CF. We also need to sign Smith.
It is however not as easy as some might think, although Leicester seem to have loaned a quick young forward to Lincoln today, with their connections to Brentford I wonder if they gave us a call too?

Ben Starosta thread

how many loans in a season are we allowed? i'm sure it changes every year depending on short term loans, season long loan?
